The woman did not leave the couch for 2-5 years!
One interesting line : Detectives are investigating whether they have a case of neglect, or if it is simply a very sad story.
AWD_ENVY August 17th, 2004, 12:20 PM Thats just sad... and I definatly think it's a case of both tragedy and neglect from the person who was feeding this woman.

:d_eek:
Bunko August 17th, 2004, 02:37 PM One thing I just thought about - and don't read it if you are having lunch right now ;) - is how did she go to the bathroom if she did not leave the couch for 5 years.
Or how did she take a shower?

Hence the reason they had to pump fresh air into the house....
Skoorb August 17th, 2004, 03:07 PM She wouldn't shower. Bathroom duties would be using a bucket. Unless this woman previously had a handicap, which prevented her from moving, her caretaker shares no responsibility in this woman's overeating to the point where she can't move. I can't imagine why you'd still feed somebody like that, of course.
She would have bed sores like you can't believe (my wife is a nurse and tells me about them - if you are bedridden and don't move for long periods, you get huge gaping wounds).
What a disgusting waste of food and life.

Flabby August 17th, 2004, 03:38 PM I read that on another forum. It's almost unbelievable.
The article didn't explain however whether she died from trying to be removed from the couch or if she was "ill".

The point at which she decided she'd make a couch her new home, for good, she was dead anyway!
slush_puppy August 17th, 2004, 04:43 PM How do you just, all of a sudden one day, realize that you can't get off the couch? It makes no sense, other than to agree with what Skoorb said, that she just mentally resigned to making the couch her final destination.
Skoorb August 17th, 2004, 05:15 PM How do you just, all of a sudden one day, realize that you can't get off the couch? It makes no sense, other than to agree with what Skoorb said, that she just mentally resigned to making the couch her final destination.I would guess that she was spending more and more time there and starting sleeping there, instead of bothering to move to her bed when it was time to sleep, and her caretaker was probably well used to getting her food and what not and then one day she realized "Hey damn I've not moved off the couch in about a week", and from there she just kind of continued to eat. If I was her caretaker I'd have ordered a big smelly pizza and put it, with the tv remote, across the room, and that would have been her motivation to move.
