I always use the Elliptical machine, and wow it says it burns about 500-600 calories for 30 minutes of Aerobic work. It doesn't even feel that strenuous either (60-80RPM range)

that is the machine from my local gym.

I go on a stationary bike and work between 80-100 RPM and I burn like 1/3 as many calories as the elliptical.

Also, 45 minutes of slow jogging/fast walking on a Treadmill is only like 400 Calories burned.

Stair climber, for me, is very very hard. Nevertheless, apparently I burn more calories on an elliptical anyway.

So my question is this: why doesn't EVERYONE use an elliptical? Or, is the calorie counter inaccurate?

I am 6'3" , 260 LBs and about 24% BF (yea I know, I need to be less. that is why I'm working out)

I would think the calorie counter on the elliptical is off a little. I am not as big as you, but I go like hell on mine for 45 minutes at about 80-85% mhr and I burn almost 500 calories. That seems to be about what it should be (maybe a little high) based on everything I have read about calorie burning on cardio equipment.

i duno how accurate the calorie counter, but eliptical are good on your joints unlike a treadmill

only problem is, if you want to be fast, elipticals wont help

My eliptical set on full leg and 3% resistance at about 140-150rpm gives me 400 cals burned in 42 min.

That sounds about right, what is your heart rate during your workout?

I do 25-30 min on the elliptical trainer as part of my cardio (empty stomach) workout. It says that I burn about 225 calories. I put it up to level 3 (which is a measure of resistance but I have no idea what that means) and I go at a speed of 52 ave (again I have no idea what that means.) My heart rate gets up eventually to 145, which is where I want it. When I am stronger, I increase the resistance. I am not able to go faster. (Too old, man, too old.) I work up a bit of a sweat and then hope on the treadmill for an incline of 4.5% and speed 4.2 mph for 25-30 minutes. That registers around 200 calories.

It is annoying that as my weight slowly declines the number of calories I burn in a workout declines as well. But I guess it is a worthwhile trade-off for losing weight. :d_wink:

My heart rate is around 138-142 area.. I can tell when it's too high ..I get a little light headed..

Sorry for the slow response..I loose track of my posts :)

Not sure about the calorie counter but I find elipticals and every other indoor cardio equipment for that matter soooooooooo boring.

I think your elliptical is giving you the right reading. That does sound like the right amount of calories being burned. Congrats on the weight loss. Keep up the good work.
