On the olympic set above, it has 4 25# plates and no 35# plates, anyone think this is a problem??

I wouldn't worry about it since it has 4 10 lb weights instead of 2. I'd actually prefer having 4 x 25 and 4 x 10 instead of 2 x 25, 2 x 35, and 2 x 10. If you buy DB handles, you already have balanced weights for each side without buying more. Well, I guess you need to buy 2x2.5s still.

With my set (35's), I have to go buy 2 x 25, 2 x 10, and 2 x 2.5 to balance it out.

I don't have any experience with this particular set, but the extra $ is for the rubber coated weights with the handy cutouts. The same set with the coating only on the edges is $30 less.

Dunno about anyone else, but I always prefer the rubber coated weights at my gym (Iron Grip).

Looks nice. I'd prefer the two 25s and two tens instead of two 35s.

I would gladly pay $50 to upgrade what I bought last year (standard 300lb set) to this thing.

Do they even sell olympic sized dumbell handles  ???? lol

Yep, they do. I think they are normally 12 - 13 lbs per handle. Probably about $20 each.

I got a pack from Galyan's w/ Olympic Curl Bar, two Olympic Dumbbell Handles, and 6 clips for $40 bucks, but they aren't the standard weights. They are 5 lbs and then 3 lbs for each handle. They seem to work fine, except for the curl bar is a little weak in the middle with a lot of weight on the ends. I was balancing it in the middle on a leg extension/preacher curl and it seems to have flattened the middle some. I'm not sure. So, I don't rest it anymore and it has been great. The clips are light (2 circles in the ring instead of 3), but they seem to hold 25-30 lbs vertically (for hammer curls). I'm going to pick up some 3 ring ones for them instead for when I get to heavier weights (past 50 lbs per DB on hammer curls).

Just doing a search and came across this thread. Although I'd prefer not to get anything with the Weider name on it, I really like the looks of this set. The rubber coating is a nice bonus, assuming it's decent quality and won't crack and fall off in 6 months, and I really like that it's got an extra pair of 10's & 25's and no 35's. Problem is, the price is $336 instead of $190 when using the link at the top.

Did anyone ever buy this set for the $190 price?

Hmmm, and now 2 days later it's down to $220. Maybe it'll drop more as we get closer to x-mas? I'm going to go to Sears today and see if they have any in stock to see what they look like.

I've been watching the Weider Oly sets at Sears for the past month or so. The price goes on sale for a day or two then shoots back up. I really don't know why they do this, but yeah, basically it's on sale 50% of the time. At any rate, the on sale price is the cheapest Ive seen for rubber coated or ringed anything. Provided that the rubber doesnt fall off after a couple months it's a steal.

I should add that I too would have preferred 4x25 4x10 to 2x35 2x25 2x10.

I *HATE* 35s. I basically just think they are worthless. All they do is take up room and then you need to buy more 25s and 10s anyway for your DBs and curl bar! I'm actually going to try to sell just my 35s at Play it Again sports and try to trade for 25s and 10s.

Oh BTW, Walmart carries an Oly set that is 1 EZ-Curl bar, 2 DB Handles and 6 Clips for only $30-40. Of course the bars are hollow and the quality isnt that great. But the price can't be beat. The solid DB Handles are usually $20-30 each from what I've seen.

Ok, I saw that olympic set today and it doesn't seem bad at all. The rubber definitely isn't a hard kind of rubber that would crack. There's 2 different rubber coated sets actually. On one set the entire plates are coated, and on the other the plates have color coded rubber o-rings around the circumference. Personally I like the all rubber ones more. They also have individual plates for sale for about a buck per pound.

Like funsocal said, it's on sale for like 4 days. I'm just gonna keep checking until it drops below 200 again and then get it.

I got these for my birthday, and they are OKAY.

The EZ Curl bar is 5 lbs, each handle is 2.5 - 3 lbs. The curl bar doesn't support enough weight. I've put 95 lbs on the sides of it, and the bar starts pinching some in each curl. I'm going to use mine until it fully bends, but it makes me a little nervous. The handles can hold the same amount of weight without bending.

I'm glad I have them overall, but I wish they were a little stronger. The clips stink for hammer curls and stuff like that, too.

Thanks for this input. I was going to ask for this set for Christmas, but on second thought maybe not.

I recently bought the Sears Weider 300# set for $150.

I placed my order online for the sale price, but they couldn't find a box of new 45 & 25s, so they gave me display units for those weights.

In about a month of use, they get kinda scuffed easily but no signs of cracking. I hate the dayglo colors, but they're excellent otherwise.

Well, the DB handles work okay, but then again, I'm not putting 95+ lbs on them. I'm putting more like 65 - 70. There's no bending with them, though. I think the curls in the curl bar cause a structural weakness in comparison to a straight tube.

Yeah, that's a good point. A long hollow bar is a lot less sound than a really short one. I'm still debating getting fixed weight dumbbells right now.

YIKES!...I've got collars that weigh more than that. A typical olympic EZ Curl weighs 18lbs. and the DB handles I have weigh 12lbs each without clips.

I actually was at the mall yesterday buying some clothes for a wedding so I stopped by Sears to check these out. The rubber looks pretty nice, gym quality. Because of the bright colors they seemed to get dirty easily though. But I liked the feel of them and the grips are always convenient. If these drop back to $150 at some point I might have to get them. I need more 10#s anyway.

Well, it's back up to $336 this week. The similar set with the rubber o-ring plates is $190 this week. I saw those in person too but didn't like them as much. The o-rings were very loose and you could spin them easily. Well, maybe next week.

I keep going by my local sears and they are 338.00USD for 300#. This is for the rubber coated weights.

It went on & off sale about 5 or 6 times before I actually bought mine. Give it some time.

It'll probably go on sale when they do a storewide sale to celebrate taking over KMart.

Yeah actually I was worrying about that. I hope the merger doesnt interfere with their alternating-weekly sales! lol
