I've started looking into protein bars, and I've been somewhat unsatisfied with the nutritional information on them.

Are they actually a wise meal replacement choice (eg. once a week), or only to be used in desperation?

I bought
Promax
Great Tasting Energy Bar
Nutty Butter Crisp

My goodness it tasted great, but it was too sweet and I didn't really feel like I was getting a proper meal.
75 g
294 cal
20 g protein
6 g fat
38 g carb
Ingredients:
protein blend, high maltose corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, whey crisp, chocolate coating (sugar, partially hydrogenated palm kernel oil, cocoa, why, nonfat dry milk, lecithin and nautral vanilla flavor), peanut butter, peanut flour, salt and natural flavors.

Is all that stuff good for me? I bought two other ones to compare (Low Carb bar Chocolate Fudge Delight and Steel Bar Satisfying Cookies & Cream - 65 g - 250 cal - 16 g protein - 4 g fat - 36 g carb - 22 sugar
no significant fibre)

I can't help but feel that Vive cereal is a wiser choice. In 1 1/3 C
60g
230 cal
11.6 protein
1.4 g fat
42 carb
15.6 sugar
4.6 g fibre

Ingredients sound a little bit similar, but it says they've added some vitamins. I can get 425 g for about $4, and the 65 g protein bar is $2. I took a protein bar to the zoo with me so I wouldn't have to eat the questionable fast food, but now I'm thinking I would have been better off snacking on Shreddies.

Now I'm confused about my nutritional goals. I don't know whether to count calories, fat, protein, carbs, sodium, fibre, vitamins, minerals, G.I...... This is all starting to sound so hard.

come on dude, u've been here too long!!! You know better!!! Look at the Promax bar. The 2nd and 3rd ingrediants are SUGAR!!! The other bars are crap as well. Whats with the cereal? Sugar content looks high to me, but it is a better choice BY FAR.

For breakfast, def. go with carbs, and clean ones at that. Best bet is oatmeal. For quick things, a bar is ok. HOWEVER, go for LOW SUGAR bars if u must have one. Bars have bad protein blends, mistaken labels, and are filled with FILLERS.

It is so hard to sort out all of this wild information. I was brought up to think "fat is bad", and now I keep hearing "carbs are bad". To me, taste is still the most important factor in choosing a food, but I'd like to also make the wisest choice for optimum performance within my taste preferences.

The protein bar sounded like a good choice because it was from a health food store. Plus, if it's that expensive, it MUST be good for you. The cereal, it's high in sugar because it's from the regular grocery store. Tastes great though, so for me, that makes it a winner. I haven't yet found Kashi, but I've only been in Canada a few days and just checked one health food store. Which bars and portable cereals do you recommend?

Breakfast I usually have oatmeal, so that's not a problem. What I'm looking for is a snack that I can stuff in a purse or beach bag at the last minute in case I forgot to prepare something beforehand. Any other ideas? Peanut butter sandwich? Homemade bran muffin?

1) Since when does price indicate quality? With that reasoning, u might as well go buy Cell-Tech b/c the 'outrageous price' justifies the 12122321% percent increase in strength

When i eat bars, i go for the EAS carb control bars. Good protein count, no sugar, decent taste. Another AWESOME BAR is called ALl-In-One. I have only seen this at one place and it was soooo good and it had the perfect protein blend, only 210 cals or so, and no sugar. OMG find those if u can. DO u like sunflower seeds/beef jerky?

Sunflower seeds are fine. I like beef jerky. But I couldn't make a meal out of either. Maybe with an apple or something.

I will look for those bars.

Maybe the real answer lies in the exercise we do and our genes. The ratios and the other things in diet aren't as important as Moderation in diet.
