View Full Version : Commuting on a Bike - PWO Nutrition?

Our office moved, and now I am in the (happy) position to be able to safely ride my bicycle to and from work.

The background: Recommendations I've read on these forums and elsewhere are to consume a post-workout shake containing (for my bodyweight) about 65g of simple carbs (dextrose in my case) and 33g of protein (whey). From what I can tell, this is beneficial whether the workout is lifting or cardio.

My commute is about 11 miles each way, and takes about 35 minutes at a fairly easy pace (average HR about 130). I plan to do this on non-weightlifting days only.

I am 5'10", currently at 167lbs, 39 yo.

The question: Do I want to consume such a large PWO meal in terms of calories (I think it's about 380) from such a short, low-intensity session of cardio? Do I want to do that after BOTH rides each day? That would be a lot of calories it seems, especially since they are calories that don't sustain my appetite for too long. I am currently cutting, on about 2100 calories/day average.

Related question: It usually gets light here around 6:30 am, and I wake up at 5:00. Many people recommend fasted state cardio, but is 1.5 hours too long to wait before doing the exercise? Should I eat when I first get up, and if so, what type of meal?
