View Full Version : If Its Not One Thing Its Another!!!
ShadowPenguin Fri, August 13th, 2004, 09:25 AM Man am i starting to get heated!!
So i decided to train for this 5 mile race coming up where I live, I figured its a good way to kick start my new resolve to lose my BF.
I was doing great for the first few weeks, going from not even being able to do a half of a lap around a track to running 4 miles in 53 minutes. My 1 mile time is 12.26 minutes, so i'm naturally pretty stoked. I also lost about 7 pounds already combining this with a stricter gym routine and a WAY better diet.
Then I get friggin shin splints, which is definetly because i pushed too hard too soon, gotta rest up to let that heal, NOW I HAVE A FRIGGIN INGROWN NAIL IN MY TOE (gross i know) and i can barely walk, gotta take care of that, and my left calve is still hurting god knows why.
this race is only in 4 weeks, i doubt i'll even be half ready. I was only aiming to finish to prove i can do it, now i might not be able to do it at all.
can't help but get more than a little disappointed by these setbacks

chicanerous Fri, August 13th, 2004, 04:59 PM Oh man, I feel you on the ingrown toenail. Both of my big toes had reoccuring ingrown toe nails. I would get them fixed, but they would come back, again and again; it was so painful.
The best thing to do is see a pediatrist (sp? foot doctor) as soon as possible. I had to have the roots of my toe nails burned out with acid so they can only grow in the forward direction.
AMR Fri, August 13th, 2004, 05:18 PM Dude, I can't help but feel partialy responsible for the way you're feeling. Take your time with the shin. If your calf is tight and sore, stretch it out and maybe put some icy hot on it.
As far as not even being half way there. Damn, you're practically there. All the progress that you've made will not go away. Just try to be paitient.
I'm not sure how serious your toenail is but I've had an ingrown nail before and here's what I did.
I cut a "V" shape in the front of the nail. believe it or not, this actually relieved some of the pressure on the sides. See attached photo.
gamut Sat, August 14th, 2004, 04:00 PM I had an ingrown toenail on my right big toe. I've had it for about 2 years, but last week, on tuesday, I got it removed.
Removed you say? Yep. 1/3rd of my nail is now gone, root and all. Painful? The initial operation wasn't all bad, just felt some tugging because I had local anaesthetics. The remainder of the evening was painful though. Very. The follow-up where the initial bandage was changed was quite possibly the most painful experience of my life, but once that pain settled it was alright.
Now, 5 days after, there's no pain, just a big gaping hole I have to soak, rinse and rebandage/compress every day until it closes.
It's a permanent solution to what used to be a permanent problem for me. I haven't run in a while now though, and I'm getting restless.
ShadowPenguin Mon, August 16th, 2004, 08:50 AM yah, my insurance just kicked it so i'm called the foot doctor guy today, i want this gone NOW.
thanks for the adivce everyone, i'm done sulking now :p
and AMR i PMd you on this one...this ISN'T your fault bro.
I do what I do, and i push myself farther than my body is ready for.
S happens, don't worry about it.
Skoorb Mon, August 16th, 2004, 09:03 AM Around 5 years ago I had a bout of repeated ingrowns. Twice I had local anesthetic applied and the general MD cut off the sides of my nail so that it was just a thin center part still remaining. This worked until it grew back. He threatened to remove the entire nail matrix. I'm so glad I didn't allow him to do that, since in Alabama where I now live, people wear sandals all the time :)
The last few ingrowns I've removed myself, though I've not had any in years. The way I do it is with a very small pair of scissors on my swiss army knife, I just push the thin blade under the nail as far as I can without dying from pain and then cut upwards. Then I push a little further, cut a little more, etc. By the time I'm done my toe is bleeding a good bit, and it hurts of course, but the nail is gone. It heals up quickly after that. After a few of these I was getting good and fast, and it didn't hurt much. Plus, the earlier you catch it the better.
RMe Mon, August 16th, 2004, 01:06 PM I too had an ingrown toennail that was recurring, and going to the doc made it worse. The procedure was not fun either. Anyway, I have never been back. I use a tool from tweezerman to remove my ingrown toenail. It is flat, has a file on the end, and was made for these type of situations. I got mine for $11 years ago, but if it were $20 now it would be worth it. Unless you have the root lanced for good, you will always have problems. I have been happy with my tool and have never looked back or been back. :tucool:
