Where I am (a little south east of Orlando on the cost) I don't think we will have it too bad. Probably just a lot of rain. The only thing I'm worried about is any tornados that spawn off the hurricane and any strong wind gusts.

I know some people that post here are in Orlando. You guys making any preparations for it or not? As this is expected to hit land sometime tomorrow, stay safe for anyone that's in it's path.

John and I are in Orlando.

I'm getting gas for the generator later and gassing up the cars tonight. Gotta move everything into the shed from the back patio and tie down the cover for the hot tub. I'm probably going to pick up my ATV from my best friend's house so I have some all-terrain capabilities just in case. That's about it here. No boarding up, etc... I figure by the time it makes it to us, it'll just be a really long version of your average afternoon downpour.

Ha! We posted the same thread at the same time! Up here in NC we're in the path of both Bonnie and Charley. I know it won't be too bad, but I've seen a couple of hurricanes that sustain pretty well for a long stretch of land, so they still make me nervous. They say we can expect about 6 inches of rain over the next 2-3 days.

Coming from an engineer specializing in drainage and stormwater design, I can tell you that 6" in 48~72 hours is but a drop in the bucket down here. I design my secondary drainage systems (water conveyance pipes/systems) for the 10-year, 24-hour storm which is about 7.5 inches per hour here in central Florida. My primary treatment ponds are designed to handle between 11"~13" of rain in 2~3 days. Down here, we'll see some localized flooding once the ground is soaked, but that's about it. And it'll prune the dead limbs out of my trees because it'll get a bit windy and give us a nice soaking rain... unlikely we'll see much more than that. I'm supposed to go mudding the following weekend, so the more rain we get in the next week... the more mud I have to play in. :tu:

That's great when your drainage is prepped for it, but our carolina clay doesn't soak up squat, so it's a big deal here.

It reminds me of when our first snowstorm hit after we moved here. Coming from NY, where the plows clear the roads like the Bule Angles, I wasn't too worried about a foot of snow. The cover of the next day's newspaper was a single salting truck that overturned off the side of the highway. The electricity was off for 5 days and the town basically shut down for a while. After a few snowstorms here, I fear the snow now... just another thing our area isn't prepared for.
