View Full Version : Herbalife - using protein but not loosing weight or cm...
xray August 11th, 2004, 11:15 AM Hi all, Long time since last I was in, hope you all are doing well.
Help, help, help!!!
Since last, I have started on herbalife, it might be familiar to some of you. It is p protein supplement I drink as a shake at three-four meals, and eat a regular, healthy supper. I also have loads of vitamins, herbs, and fiber pills together with this, and drink green tea and wather Approx 3 liters a day).
However, having been on this suplement for about 4 weeks, I have only lost about two kilos, and not increased in cm at all. Can any of you explain to me why? What am I doing wrong, or is it so that some people will never do good/better from a protein "diet"? Is it so that I have to exercise more when I take protein supplements? I will probably get most of you against me, when I say that my busy life and a bad neck so far has kept me from exercising the last months. (I can already hear it: there is aleways time for some kind of exercise and taking care of my body... :o ) - but i do have a busy and hectic job, though :p
Please, give me any advise and help you might offer, I feel lost in this world at the moment. (I thought I'd NEVER take protein supplements, but I actually like it, and feel no heavy craving for more to chew, except from supper, vegetables and some fruits once in a while.
Have a wonderful August day!
Xray
PhilipDC78 August 11th, 2004, 11:21 AM So does this mean that you are not excersizing at all? Also, I wasn't sure, but are you saying that you are drinking 4-5 shakes a day as meals, and then having a decent dinner? From everything I have seen, you want to avoid drinking most of your calories. You should be getting a large percentage of your energy from real food, not supplements and shakes. What is your total daily caloric intake? How tall are you? How much do you weigh? What is your body fat percentage? That would help more in getting advice from people around here.
I won't say that you need to excersize, since you have said that you don't want to hear it, but it would definately help. As far as losing 2 kilos in 4 weeks, that is 4.4 pounds in two weeks. I would say that is pretty decent, considering the lack of excersize. A healthy weight loss with excersize is 2 pounds a week, or 8 pounds in 4 weeks, or 3.6 kilos in 4 weeks. That is probably pretty good considering you are not excersizing.
xray August 11th, 2004, 11:31 AM I can absolutely hear that I need to exercise.. I know everybody is better off doing some of it... :o
My calorie intake while on this diet is about 13-1400 kcal a day. I am 168 cm, and weigh 78 kilos. (Sorry about the metric numbers...) I guess my fat persentage is about 28, it was last time I checked, and nothing much has changed since then.
My question was actually if everyone has to increase the workload/exercise when taking protein supplements, meaning me being active mostly only at work has to increase on it to have the protein work as it is supposed to. ( As in me loosing weight and increasing in cm.)
Or if I am doing something else wrong - cant' come up with it alone - or if some people just simply will not loose weight or increase in size when gaining up on the protein intake.
I hope I was more clear this time, sorry.

Taking protein alone will NOT make your muscles grow. You don't even need to take extra protein for muscle growth really. Protein does help in healing muscles and promoting muscle growth, but you need to do something to get the muscles growing. That something is called "excersize." Your muscles will not grow at all if you do not excersize. The best way to increase your muscle mass is through a good weight training program. All the protein in the world will not increase the amount of muscle you have unless you excersize.
The way that muscle growth works, is that when you excersize a certain muscle, especially through weight training, you strain the muscle and cause small tears in it. This is one of the reasons that you get sore from weight training or other excersize. Your body will then repair/heal the muscles, and in doing this, the muscle will increase in size. If you are not doing anything to cause the small tears in the muscle, then it will not increase in size. Protein helps the body to repair the muscle more quickly, which is why people who are on weight training programs take protein.
