View Full Version : Some HIIT help please.
Lurker704 August 9th, 2004, 09:11 PM I am very much intrested in HIIT cardio. I have read up about it and ready to try, Im not the greatest runner but believe I can keep up with it. What I need some help is what kind of cycles should I do it in? 2 min run 2min jog? Thanks for any help.
taffer August 9th, 2004, 09:33 PM depends on how fit you are, you may like to start off with 30sprints/90sec walk (depending on what machine you are donig it on) or maybe 30/30sec intervals or even 1/1min intervals, its all dependant on what you can do, but remember to go all out when you do, get your heart racing as fast as you can!
Lurker704 August 9th, 2004, 09:58 PM Id say im somewhat fit, just all of the fat I have has always been in my stomach. So I am hoping this will remove it. I will probly do 30sec/30sec run/jog the first couple of cycles. Then see just how fit I really am. I guess I will have to invest in a Polar F1 or something.

Just do a search for "HIIT" and read that area. It would probably also be beneficial to read that whole page; it's a plethora of knowledge :]

I was going to ask, after your first post, why you wanted to do HIIT cardio. I thought for sure it was only for cardiovascular endurance, as you mentioned no fat loss goals or weight issues.
However, now that you say you have all the fat on your stomach, I see you wish to burn the fat off that area. I'd opt for 65-75% of your MHR for a good 40-45 mins a.m. if you are looking to lose PURE FAT, and spare lean muscle tissue. HIIT is not going to do this for you.

Wow? - I was under the impression that the HIIT's would even be a more effective fatburner.
I read this article (http://www.cbass.com/FATBURN.HTM) at Clarence Bass's site 3 weeks ago, and immidiatly switched to HIIT.
Perhaps it would be a better option to mix it up a bit?
Chris_Otto August 11th, 2004, 09:15 AM From my reading, HIIT is a good compromise between anaerobic cardio and fat burning cardio and it does both in shorter amounts of time. I do fat burning cardio, 35-40 mins 4 times per week, HIIT at least once, and balls-out high intensity biking for 20 miles twice per week. (Yes that is a lot of cardio but my goals are aimed at building cardio capacity while reducing body mass not just fat burning.)

Do me a favor, it's a challenge I serve up to everyone who is one the fence about this. (of course you must do BOTH correctly, or results will be skewed)
Do HIIT for a while, see where you get fat loss wise and lean mass preservation/gain wise. Then try the 45 mins of a CONSISTENT lower intensity (65-75%MHR) and tell me what changes you then see in a few weeks. Diet of course has to be spot on for both approaches, but one definitely will work faster/better when accompanied by the correct dietary approach.
