I came across this in another thread, and was wonder what experiences people had with it or if anyone knew where in the States we could purchase it...I came across this link (http://www.macromeats-gourmetgame.com.au/cutscodes.html) and while I didn't think much meat could possibly come from a Kangaroo it seems I was wrong. Where do I find some??? How does it taste??? How do you cook it for maximum taste sensation???

well i've tried 2 cuts of kangaroo, the loin fillet and topside(cheaper one)
the topside is more suited for longer cooking, but doesnt have any extra fat! i reckon it tastes better too, also its cheaper :D
kangaroo tastes alot of beef, but with a more "wild" taste to it, its really interesting

you gotta be careful not to overcook kangaroo, cos its got little fat and will dry out and toughen-up quickly, you can eat it pretty rare, but i like it a bit more well done! thats just my taste though, im still learning alot about cooking it, i do it on my george forman style grill (twice as powerful as the forman :D)

i get my kangaroo from the queen vic market, obviously you cant go there cos its only in melbourne :p but maybe there is a place similar to it, kangaroo is growing in popularity so maybe as a few butchers and they may have it, or maybe there is a "market" in your city!

I live in the heart of hick country (ok, but B-town rules anyways!), if I asked for 'roo they'd probably think I was clinically insane.

It just seems so weird to me to think about eating kangaroo meat. I keep imagining roo ranches where roo's are raised just for their meat. Rooboys riding around on their horses?

I think it would be awesome to get kangaroos over here in the states. Heck, we have alpacas, emus, and ostriches, why not kangaroos?

well our kangaroo population is about 60million(they outnumber our population 3:1), so we got plenty to go around!
so we better get eatin' before they take over the country!

i dont think there are any "kangaroo farms" but i could be wrong :)

Lemonsong: I have always lived in big cities, and I've never seen kangaroo meat either. :D

But it looks like we may already have sampled kangaroo meat. :d_eek:
"The high level of industry concern about meat substitution and identification dates back to 1982 when unscrupulous operators were convicted for substituting kangaroo meat for beef being sent to the USA."

I googled up this interesting info on kangaroo meat. The site also has a diagram of where the meat comes from. I suppose you could import some from this company in bulk. Group buy? :eat:

Are there any disease issues, like mad cow, associated with Kangaroo?

hehehe no :p if there was, i doubt they would be allowed to sell it
although some kangaroo's are mad! everyone has a story about driving in the bush and a kangaroo jumping out infront of their car!

australia is great cos we are so isolated and probly have some of the best/cleanest foods in the world, when that whole mad cow thing was going on, im sure our beef farmers were grinning :D

Anyone know a place online to purchase some 'roo?

I think they would make nice pets too, does anyone keep them around in Aussieland?

Roo is considered dog meat in Oz! At least where I come from, you buy it in huge bulk frozen bag in the supermarket and feed it to the dog. :) its cheaper than buying tins of Pal.

The only time you'll find it in a restaurant in Australia is in one of those tourist trap places that make up exotic meat dishes like Crocodile, Snake, Emu etc.

I have tried it though, didnt like it. Way too dry and tough for my liking! Perhaps i didnt cook it right.

Stick to turkey.. ;)

They also make nice pets! I went out with a girl that lived in the sticks and she had a Roo! They saw a flailing kangaroo on the side of the road and decided to stop and help. Turns out in the pouch was a little bub. Unfortunately the mum didnt make it, but they brought up "Joey" (aptly named) like any household pet. Bizarre. And in fact they are actually quite intelligent creatures, responding to voice commands like a dog! They strung up an old pillow case as a makeshift pouch for it to sleep in!

i bought some kangaroo sausages the other day.
Cheap and extremely low in fat, and they were damn tasty too.
