Eating Total Raisen Bran every morning has not had any noticable bad impact for me. But who knows, maybe if I replaced it with something else ...

This is interesting - Jeff Willet's diet - http://www.ast-ss.com/jeffwillet/RoadTo2003/DailyJournal.asp?display=nutrition&jid=25&week=1

He was eating Frosted Flakes every morning! (though he did cut this as he got closer to the contest date)

Well, its important that you understand that fat won't make you fat, and carbs won't make you fat either. A "low fat" diet can be just as bad as a "low carb" diet. When you start out, just think about moderation. Keep your diet well rounded and under portion control, post a lot on these boards, and we'll help you out as much as possible.

Lemon, I can't agree with you more. It's as simple as that. All these fad diets are killing me!! Although, the low carb diet is better for diabetics. Can't wait to see the next fad five years from now!

Anyways, hrlykid, too much of anything is bad. It seems from the types of cereals you are choosing will have more fiber than say......Fruit Loops. You have that going for you.

Me too! If I hear one more thing about low carb! I swear I saw low carb vitamins the other day. I'm still waiting for low carb toothpaste to hit the shelves. Where are they going to draw the line?

On the subject of cereals, I usually eat oats in the morning. Sometimes I'll cook a bowl of hot grits (anyone have any insight on how good/bad these are for you?). I normally just mix in water, a dash of salt and then pepper to taste. If that isn't cutting the mustard, I eat Total (the one in the blue box), and on a very rare occasion, the plain Cheerios.

I still believe that no one food in moderation will make you fat. If I have a couple of slices of pizza on a cheat day, I'm not going to gain weight, but if I eat it everyday ...

There are certainly benefits to a low-carb diet, esp. for very inactive people..the problem is the blind-consumership and the overt marketing. People are willing to listen and buy and companys are willing to tell and sell. Simple as that...in the 80s and 90s it was the low-fat trend, now its the low-carb trend, next it'll be low-protien...seems like the natural progression to me...someone will come out w/ an obscure study (something like: 50% of people die due to over use of protein over the course of 10 years when more than 100 grams of protein are used between the hours of 5:00pm and 7:00pm on odd-numbered mondays in the month of July!) and it'll start a scare and then people will cut back...the key is to use what your body needs (figuring that out takes some time) not what others say your body needs. This fad-type stuff bothers me almost as much as the "Ideal Weight Chart" that goes by height so apparently I'm supposed to be like 150lbs or i'm "unhealthy" LAUGHABLE!

Anything can make you fat, because calories are the most important things. Obviously if you overeat on these cereals you can get fat, just as you can lose weight if all you eat is cereal, but you don't eat that much of it.

I eat Kellogs Raisin Bran every morning with a cup of 1% milk.

There's lot's of fiber in cereal. Fiber helps me to feel fuller longer and it helps to keep me regular.

So for me: Cereal = Good.

Although not the worst option, Raisin Bran is loaded both w/ sodium and sugar (~20g). Adding a cup of milk adds another 12g of sugar as well. Although this is mostly fructose (from the raisins) and lactose (from the milk), eating 32g of sugar is not the best option.

Just a suggestion.... Kellogs Raisin Bran raisins are coated in sugar for taste. It's much healthier to just buy Bran cereal and add raisins yourself.
