View Full Version : buffalo meat
jesse1 Sun, August 8th, 2004, 04:54 PM Friend of mine told me to try buffalo. The specs are very impressive. It is better for you than chicken or fish. We had buffalo burgers tonight. I have to say they were very unremarkable. Not bad enough to make you hurl but I would rather skip a meal and get a real hamburger. If you don't care about flavor and are just thinking "healthy" give them a try, otherwise have a cheat day and a real hamburger. (Oh yeah, buffalo is at least twice as expensive as beef.) :eat:
taffer Sun, August 8th, 2004, 07:35 PM i like to eat kangaroo
its cheaper than chicken ($9 a kilo, opposed to $10 a kilo for regular, and $14 a kilo for freerange/chem/hormone free)
its got less than 1.5% fat, is a great source of iron and zinc, also it has 5 times the CLA of lamb (not sure how much that is though!)
i eat tons of kangaroo now, the taste is pretty unique!
Taxcheat Mon, August 9th, 2004, 12:13 AM Those of us in the US are deprived of kangaroo! :d_frown: We do get ostrich, though.
As for the specs of various meats, they're all good for you as long as they're lean. 96% lean beef is just as good for you as chicken, which is in the same ballpark. You don't want to wholly eliminate fat from your diet.
I'm sure there's some propaganda on the meat industry website if you don't believe me. :D

Doesn't it make you jumpy  (Sorry couldn't resist)
TheLemonSong Mon, August 9th, 2004, 12:14 PM I'd love to bbq me some 'roo! DAMN! That's it...I'm goin' to Australia!
As for Buffalo...its an EXCELLENT meat. High in protein, very low in fat (compared w/ beef) and the taste is just marvelous.
I know JeremyLikness buys 1/2 or FULL buffalo and then has a butcher make him all the cuts from it and freezes it...if Jeremy says its good for you, chances are he's right...and either way, it just tastes SOOOOO good...
cmullens Mon, August 9th, 2004, 12:23 PM Maybe you overcooked your buffalo burgers. Buffalo meat is much lower in fat than beef, so you have to be careful not to overcook it. When cooked properly, buffalo tastes much better to me than beef.

Definitely didn't overcook it. It was still moving when I took it off the grill. I found it a little on the "mushy " side like an undercooked meatloaf. It also didn't have a great deal of flavor. I bought it at a high quality "health" food store so it should have been good. I'd like to try it again, but my wife says if we are going to cheat and have red meat, it will be the REAL stuff with fat and marbling. yum yum :eat:
cz3ch Tue, August 10th, 2004, 02:25 PM I've tried some of the more exotic meats... can't beat chicken for the price/taste :)
chops Tue, August 10th, 2004, 02:40 PM i tried buffalo and ostrich. i agree, i'd rather just eat beef . the buffalo and ostrich has a gamey taste and smell that i dont like.
ThatOldGuy Tue, August 10th, 2004, 03:04 PM Hmm... I'm with Jeremy and LemonSong on this one. I've been buying bison for a while and other than the price, I love it. I don't notice a gamey taste at all. It could very well have something to do with the way they're fed and processed.
I understand that everyone doesn't have the same taste (I love cottage cheese) but you need to try it at least once.
furches Fri, November 12th, 2004, 12:05 AM I live in South Dakota, where buffalo isn't much more expensive than beef. Personally, I haven't eaten beef in 2 years, I just don't like the fat-laden crap. Buffalo is great. I agree its important not to overcook, though. If you still don't like the taste, try mixing it with some Worcestershire (sp?) sauce and onion powder. It gives it a nice zing!
JeremyLikness Fri, November 12th, 2004, 12:29 AM Hey!!! I'm over in Lead ... how's it going in Yankton?
My wife just bought us our 1/2 buffalo for this year. I can't wait! They should have it ready for us in mid-December. We're talking breakfast sausages, ribs, sirloins, patties ... I LOVE the taste of buffalo, much more than beef. It is deeee-licious. The ribs are to die for. Everyone has their own taste .. me? I can't figure out if I'm more excited about the buffalo coming our way or getting on Terry Peak to use our season passes ...

1FastGTX Fri, November 12th, 2004, 10:02 AM I LOVE Buffalo too. It's very tasty to me.
If they have a Smokey Bones restaurant where you guys live -- go there and try their Buffalo Burgers. I actually don't care for this restaurant at all but this is one thing on the menu that's really good.
Honestly I like it more than regular hamburgers.
CASD Fri, November 12th, 2004, 02:50 PM I like Black Angus Beef better then regular....
The hamburger is more like meat loaf.. and I'm pretty sure it's more lean and higher protein then regular beef
Human Clay Fri, November 12th, 2004, 11:10 PM I want to try kangaroo meat, and buffalo, damnit. All I have here is fish, chicken, pork and beef. I need to take a trip to Australia .
I could have some deer if I wanted to get a gun and shoot one... but I'm not that desperate for change (and I love seeing them alive so much, they're always frolicking around my neighbourhood).
