View Full Version : Woohoo! Got my first "too skinny" remark.
adamc Thu, August 5th, 2004, 11:53 AM It was only a pseudo-"too skinny" comment, but I'll take it. Someone at work this morning saw me and said:
"You're gonna get too skinny there before long, buddy."
I said that I think I've got a ways to go before that happens and he replied, "Not really."
Very cool. I'll take partial credit for this. I still get to look forward to an unqualified "you're too skinny" comment, but this is great for now.
Still need to update my signature ... I'm 218 now ... haven't checked bodyfat in a while.
I didn't tell my coworker that my current plan is to lose at least another 26 pounds (12% bodyfat at current LBM). Would have been funny to see his reaction.
Hope you're all having a good week. :)

Lol, same here! I got a comment that I was "melting away" the other day. I am also at about 218 currently, and plan on having another 30 or so pounds gone before my transformation is complete to get to 10% bf at my current lbm. It truely makes it all worth it, huh?
ThatOldGuy Thu, August 5th, 2004, 12:37 PM Congratulations! I heard "you're fat" for so long that I was really thrilled the first time I heard the too skinny remark. Get used to it as you'll hear it over and over before you're finished. Some people get really tired of it but I never did.
Eventually, though, all my friends got used to the new me and the comments have gradually decreased. I don't hear it so often anymore. I only hear it now from people who haven't seen me in a while.

I used to get the "you're too skinny" comments growing up all the time. I was just skinny. It wasn't until I turned 21 or so that I really started to put on weight. From age 21 to now (26), I gained about 60 pounds, and so am now trying to get rid of it and keep it off. I was never really athletic growing up, just had a fast metabolism and so was skinny. I can't wait to get the "you're too skinny" comments once again.

Keep at it! 218 seems to be the magic number. ;)

Diamond_Star Thu, August 5th, 2004, 05:06 PM Interesting that this was posted.
My cousin Susan is visiting this week and we went out last night to an imrov show at one of our local bars (i sipped on water, which was fine to me).
Susan said..."when are you gonna stop trying to lose weight"? I was like "huh, why, what do you mean"
"your too skinny now" she says, "everyone else thinks so too". I was like I am small, but I am definitely not too skinny, I said I enojy working out and I wanna be the best I can be and Im not quite there yet. Dont call me skinny, I have muscle and I dont look anorexic skinny, I believe I am fit looking, not sick looking, this kind of hurt me.
Then she goes on and says "Char your a nazi dieter" .. ??? I was like what? no Im not I watch what I eat, so? She said "Charmaine YOU EAT EGG WHITES"!!! Man I was getting so pissed at her!
Ahhh I totally took over this thread sorry! haha
Skoorb Thu, August 5th, 2004, 05:14 PM Did you know that anorexics thrive on comments like that, and those such as "You look like a skeleton."?
Anyway, on topic, I doubt any of us here are anorexic, so those of us not starving themselves to death can definitely appreciate such comments. I've never been big enough to get that skinny comment from people besides my dad on occasion and my mom more frequently when I was younger. It is nice, even if it can quickly become annoying as your mother thinks that you need a doctor or something (I was never overly thin - she was just brought up with the healthy-to-be-chubby ideal, and was used to me being that way).
born sleepy Thu, August 5th, 2004, 07:53 PM the only people who say that to me are fat ones at work. I guess they can't stand to see one of their own finally get fed up and do something about it. the smokers' clique is giving me the cold shoulder too. no great loss.

Stay at work with chubby co-workers and you get ridicule. It's a common thing, because people here have a good attitude and those at work have a sour-grapes one. Surely you're starving yourself or you don't eat enough - <sarcasm>I personally love getting advice from people who eat chocolate bars and chips for lunch!</sarcasm>:P

I got this the other day. I was talking to a friend I rarely see. He said:
"So what is this I hear about you being a skeleton?"
I said:
"What?"
He said:
"Yea, everyone I talk to says that you are a skeleton now."
It was fine with me. I have always been a thin person, but I had quite a gut going for a thin person. People's ignorance just makes me shake my head. What is perfect for me, does not make me an unhealthy "skeleton". I could use some muscle, but I am not a "skeleton".
I suppose I was more healthy with my Budweiser and pizza gut.....
N O T!!! :tucool:
adamc Thu, August 5th, 2004, 08:53 PM What's funny is that I have more confidence than ever now that I'm going to get a six-pack for the first time in my life.
I'll probably be somewhere around 180-190 pounds ... somewhere around 9-11 percent ...
I'll be the strongest I've ever been in my life, with the best, most balanced muscle mass I've ever had ...
My maintenance calories will be somewhere around 3500 easily (I'm losing 1.5 lbs a week at 2900 calories) ...
Every measure of my health ... cholesterol, blood pressure, resting heart rate, HbA1c, etc ... will all be picture perferct ...
My wife won't be able to keep her hands off me ...
And a bunch of folks will be saying I'm too skinny, a skeleton, etc. A few years ago it would have bothered me. Now, I'm gonna love it. I think I might flash 'em a peek at my abs ...
Thanks for understanding, and for the kinds words ...
LarryNC Fri, August 6th, 2004, 02:11 AM I remember long ago when I was losing weight, my friends dad said "Don't lose anymore weight or you'll blow away!"
Another friend named Kim said "Larry, please don't lose anymore weight."
I guess its because I was 270 and went down to 167 in 6 months that shocked them, but I wasn't a 6-packer yet either!
Comments like that are cool but weird, aren't they?
nals Fri, August 6th, 2004, 11:24 AM the smokers' clique is giving me the cold shoulder too. no great loss.
lmao!
rubberbandman Fri, August 6th, 2004, 12:11 PM You think there could be something to the fact that its so common for people to say "you're getting too skinny"? Nobody ever says "man you've been getting too fat!" I wonder if the fact that the majority of Americans are overweight or obese makes the average persons perception of "healthy" become skewed up 10 or 20 pounds? I think it could be that people are really starting to lose sight of what an average healthy person is because they aren't average now. They are at the low end of the scale.

I think it could be that people are really starting to lose sight of what an average healthy person is because they aren't average now.I've no doubt that there is something to that, though I'd say more of it is probably just that they feel threatened by it, and a thin person in the midst of fat people serves as a continual reminder to them about their weight problem.
