From everything that I have read , 65-75% for fat burning and over that for cardio strenthening. Doesn't your heart 's strength and health improve with the 65-75%?

I am not sure that the jury is in on improving heart health at all. But cardio does improve fitness and well being.

What are your near term goals? Have you reach your weight goals and have a good muscle foundation for metabolism?

I'm looking to drop another 10-15 pounds. Aside from that I just want to stay fit. I lift weights, but not for any bodybuilding purpose. I also workout on my elliptical for 45 minutes each moring at 65-80%.I am 60 and would like to see 80 without taking away all the joy in life by spending all of my time working out and dieting.

My jury's in on that one. Resting heart rate for me was 80+ BPM prior to weight loss. As of my physical this past May, my RHR is 50 BPM. If a 38% reduction in the work that my heart has to do to keep me alive isn't an improvement, I dunno what is...

I am 62, so I know where you are coming from except, I don't look at working out and watching diet as taking joy out of life. It is just like bathing and sleeping, things we need to do, to live life with joy. We have to look at it as a way of life to live life to its fullest.

Muscles are what you will need to help you to stay in shape to enjoy those next +20 years. Cardio will build endurance. :gl:

Sounds great, I wonder how long distance runners stack up on long lives. Do they live longer than weightlifters? Any exercise is good, keep on trucking.

I am one of those with a 90+ RHR, been there since it was brought to my attention in teens. I have had annual physicals since age 21. Every doctor said don't worry about it, you are just built that way. So far nothing ever showed up on heart tests, even stress tests. Health is strange mix, an important one is genes.

Well, I just can't help but cheat occassionally and have a plate of ribs or some nice greasy mexican food. If that makes me evil, so be it. Otherwise I do do the things that I am supposed to. Quite frankly if I could eat and drink anything I wanted to and still be in great shape without working out I would do it in a minute. :eat:
