View Full Version : Unread-status seems to disappear..?!?

I've noticed something with the unread status of mails.

I read all new posts from one forum (Fat Loss) and then I closed the browser and did something else. I noticed that many of the other forusm (practically all) shows the ">"-sign as a mark of having undread posts.

Now I came back to the forums again, the second time today and noticed that the ">"-sign has disappeared from some forums where it was earlier today and I definitely haven't even accessed those forums today.

For example, the Challenges-forum had the ">"-sign earlier but now it doesn't. I opened the forum and sure enough, there is one thread that contains one post from today so it should be new to me, but even the thread name isn't bolded and there isn't the down-arrow sign before the thread name.

So, what is the logic behind the read/unread status? I know that a read becomes read when I read it, but why the unread-status disappears even if don't read the new posts on a thread?...

This is quite annoying as I would like to read all new unread posts on each session when browising the forums but now it seems that I can do it only by looking at the dates on the posts and that is a drag...

Anybody else have this problem?

I have the exact same problem. It's especially bad because of the large amonuts of posts that get by me now.

Aren't compromises a bugger. I type slowly (not a techie) and sometimes I have the 15 minutes used replying to a post. Any chance of moving it out to 25-35 mins?

Plureeze??

In my experience anything longer than 15 minutes is too long of a timeout.

Here's a trick: if you want to keep your session active, try opening a separate browser and then click the "Currently Active Users" link in that browser. It will refresh every 60 seconds and keep your session live.

I read your reply on the other thread about posts hanging there forewer with new-statuses and never disappearing and how that might be an annoyance for someone. Well, in the quick links there seems to be a function "Mark Forums Read". Why not do so that the forum never automatically mark messages as read for anyone unless they really read them. If someone then doesn't want to read all messages, (s)he just has to read all (s)he wants and then use the "Mark Forums Read" to mark all remainin posts as read. This way it would be up to the user if he wishes to read all (like e.g. myself) or read some and mark rest as read manually.

Or then another choise: Why not make the automatic read-status setting as an option to the user options. It could be like "Set all threads as read on session exit" or something like that. If it is selected, then the system would behave exactly like now. If it is not selected, then the system would never automatically mark anything read on session expiration, they would be marked read only when the user really reads the posts.

This way the current mode of operation could be maintained by those who want but if someone wants to read all new posts and minimize the chances of missing any postings, then that person chould just unselect that option.

Are those reasonable ideas?

Yesterday I went to the forums just as they were being backupped. Ok, I closed the browser and came back about 30 mins later.

But now there were hardly any new postings on the forums! That is, according to the status-icons on the forums.

That is simply impossible, considering that last time I read the forums on the previous day, there should have been loads of new postings. And of course there were (when looking at the dates of the postings) but the status icons showed that there weren't.

For example, there were no new mails (according to the status icons) on the Journals-forum but of course there was, at least Knubb had added a comment to my journal about my latest photos.

So, is it really so that if one happens to check out the forums while they are being backupped, the timout bites and one loses the new-statuses of all postings if one comes back later...?!?!?!

The cookie timeout is 30 minutes (I raised it a while ago from 15 minutes). I suppose if you hit the forum just before the backup that could happen because the backup takes longer than the cookie timeout period.

It seems like the best solution would be to offer a user-selectable CP option:

Keep all unread posts as new until "Mark Forums Read" is used

...which would be off by default, but selectable for "advanced" users. I can't make this the default behavior because not many people know about or use the "Mark Forums Read" link. There's not much I can do about this problem because I'm not a vBulletin developer and I'm reluctant to hack up the board because it makes upgrading much more difficult. Perhaps you could suggest this idea or any other ideas you have to the vBulletin developers?
