View Full Version : EZ CURL VS. STRAIGHT BARBELL: Benefits / drawbacks of either?
MGB Wed, July 21st, 2004, 08:53 PM Subject line pretty much sums up my question. Can't do straight bar because it kills my wrist, but curious what I'm missing from not doing straight bar curls, and what I'm gaining from doing EZBar (instead of straight bar) curls.
TheLemonSong Wed, July 21st, 2004, 10:50 PM Well, its certainly a more comfortable wrist position!
I bought an EZCurl for like 20 dollars at play it again sports, and I get a lot of use out of it. I think you'l lfind that its MUCH more comfortable. I find that it won't replace things like bench press, but as for curls its a LOT better. I'm able to maintain better form because the bar is easier to get a good solid grip on, thus my elbows stay in the correct alignment much easier and don't vary as much set-to-set.

What is better for cutting - a steak knife or scissors?
Better yet - what's best to paint with. Yellow or red paint?
My point is that, to train your biceps, you must bend your arm. How you bend it can be done in a variety of ways from straight barbell or EZ-curl bar to anything in between. If the straight is uncomfortable, use the EZ. You're not missing a thing.

Really, though, my biceps growth feels like it's stalled a bit and was a little concerned the EZ curl wasn't as effective as straight bar, so glad to get this note. In the past I could use a russian lifting technique (sticking elbows in your side while doing dumbell curls) to increase size but that's just too hard on my elbow joint. Will try mixing up my bicep routine in others ways. Basically now I do standing concentration curls, standing dumbell curls, hammer curls, and EZ bar curls.

I haven't done straight bar in years. I do ez and then have no problems with anything else; I can get my plam parallel to teh floor with dumbell curls if I want, and no wrist pains involved. Straight-bar barbell curls are just hell on a wrist. I think it's simply a less natural motion.
QuikZ06 Thu, July 22nd, 2004, 03:55 PM I have a Super-EZ bar. More curved than normal ez. You can't hammer curl with a barbell. I do skull crushers, Normal bicep curls, overhead tricep press, deadlifts, bent rows all with my EZ. No wrist pain at all!
MGB Thu, July 22nd, 2004, 05:43 PM Ditto on everything you just said. I can do dumbell curls with palms parallel to the floor, no problem.

Dont_quit Sat, July 24th, 2004, 04:29 AM I've read that E-Zs take the stress off the biceps, but I'll have to check google again. I use a straight bar because I don't feel like buying another bar.
