Hi All

I've been wondering, does anyone know how long a cardio session should last for optimum fat burning results. I receive a subscription to Oxygen and the fitness competitors and models ususally do over 45 minute sessions of cardio, 4-6 days a week depending.

At the moment I run for 35-40 minutes and I'm wondering if this is enough to really burn fat. It seems the magic number from what I have read has been cardio over 40 minutes, does anyone know if this is correct? Are the thirty to forty minutes sessions 5-6 days a week not enough (for fat burning).
Any advice would be great

Hi,

I have been under the impression that 3 x weeks HITT was the key, but with all the reading on the topics and now with the purchase of the e-book of Tom Venuto, Yes it seems that the best cardio for burning fat is at least 45 minutes of cardio and not HITT and this could be 4 to 6 times a week but depending on your goal. HITT is still good, and it is recomend to have a mix of both of them, just like changing the cardio equipments tools.

It seems like every mag I read or person I talk to has a different opinion about this ....currently my trainer has me doing 45 min twice a day, 5 days a week ( I don't rec. this for everyone lol). Get your heart rate up and keep it there 30 to 45 min 5 days a week and you will burn fat.

Cardio sessions should last anything from 20 mins to 1 hr depending on the type of workout - cardio session you do.

I do mine in 40 minute sessions.

Suggest that you do it 3 times week, and combine this with activities on the aerobic floor and gym.

Actually Aqua Aerobics might also be an option as well.

Mix it up and see what is the best for you.

The key to fat burning is diet.

Cardio is great for heart health. Anything beyond what you are currently doing is unnecessary.

The American College of Sports Medicine recommends 3-5 cardio workouts lasting 20-60 minutes in duration each week.

Just found this on another fitness site . It sounds logical.

You begin to burn more fat than carbohydrates after 20 minutes. Because of this, shorter cardio sessions are best for maintaining your current weight, while longer sessions are best for losing weight.

If you just want to maintain your current weight then 60-90 minutes PER WEEK will usually be adequate. How you choose to split that time up during the week is your choice and depends on your level of endurance.

If your goal is to burn as much bodyfat as you can, 2-5 hours of cardio PER WEEK will be sufficient. Your sessions should be 40-60 minutes in length.

The best time to do your cardio sessions for maximum fat loss is right away in the morning before you eat anything. After you've been asleep for 6-8 hours, the level of sugar (glucose) in your blood is very low and your body will use stored fat as an alternative energy source.

If you are consistent with your cardio workouts and can incorporate them into your life, you will see results!
