Does any one use a boxing bag as their only cardio exercise? Have you got good results from this type of cardio?

Well...

If you're actually practicing boxing, your heartrate will go WAY above the 75% MHR, so it might not be the best thing to do for 45 minutes. It would also get kind of boring.

What's really fun is having another person wear gloves and throwing punches at the gloves. (And kicks, if you like; that makes you tired as hell)

I love boxing and use a punching bag regularly. I use one of those Wavemasters (http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=58830&cp=&searchId=5342393622&clickid=topnav_search_txt&keywords=wavemaster&parentPage=search)... I thought it looked cheesy at first but after I tried one I was convinced. When doing it for cardio, your heart rate will be very dependant on the amount of bouncing and footwork you do around the bag. If you have a heart rate monitor, it shouldn't be too hard to keep your rate steady. Buy good bag gloves (http://www.ringside.com/store/prodinfo.asp?number=CSBG&variation=&aitem=12&mitem=25), don't go cheap because you could hurt your hands. You may also want to try hand wraps when your punches get harder. Anyway, I think it's a great form of cardio, at least it's a lot more fun to me than jumping on a treadmill or elliptical.

I use a punching bag to mix things up for me. I currently use Bas Rutten's Mixed Martial arts Workout Cassette tape (it is now available on CD). Gives me different punching combinations followed by knee raises or kicks to the bags, and also going down to ground and getting back up from the defensive posture. I switch between doing ten 2 minute rounds and seven 3 minute rounds.

The tape has Bas shouting out a number for the different combinations, for example he says

1 - then you throw a left straight
2 - left straight followed by a right straight
3 - left straight, right straight, left hook
4 - left straight, right straight, left hook, right straight

All of these are followed by either a knee raise or kick to the bag, and also going down to the ground and getting back up when he shouts defense. Great workout IMO.

I use Slam Man which is excellent. In my opinion it gives you a great cardio workout. You get sweaty and tired as hell, especially if you use your feet properly. Your arms get an awsome workout if you keep them up like you are supposed to. Its not the only cardio I use, but it is fun. Its also great to get your aggression out!
