Hi everyone!

I've been browsing this forum, and John's website for 6 months or so. . . but never got around to posting much.

I'm pretty sure my story is very different from most here.

When I was 18 I was in pretty good shape, played basketball, etc.. in high school. I'm 5 9, and weighed around 160 at this time.

All of the sudden in Feb of 99 I started to feel alot of palpatations each day. After some tests at the cardiologist he decided that an ICD implanted would be best. An ICD is a combination pacemaker/defibulator. The cardiologist was worried that continued palpatations might make my heart race, and go into vtach or vfib. So the ICD was implanted.

I don't know if it was the drugs they gave me during the hospital stay/surgery or what..but boy did I gain weight. When I left the hospital (just 48hrs after I entered), I couldn't even button the pants I wore in! And it wasn't bloating, water, etc...it was FAT! I had also been gaining weight slowly from the palpatations.

For the last few years my weight has been at a high of 202...low of 174 (which is where I need to be).

My goal is not to get in super tip top shape, but to just stay at a good weight, in decent, healthy shape. After getting back in shape last year, I stopped exercising due to a knee injury, and gained back the weight I had lost. The knee is better now, and I've been excercising for a litte over 1 month, lost approx 10 lbs so far...I'm at about 185...need to lost 10-15 more.

I take a medicine called Atenolol, which because of the way the drug works, greatly lowers my metabolism. So this adds to my struggle somewhat, as I need to excercise at least some daily, and eat healthy just to maintain my weight. Right now I eat about 1800 calories a day..no more than 25 grams from fat. I'm on the treadmill for 40-45mins 6 days a week.

A weight difference of 202 - 174 may not seem like much..but I have very skinny forearms & "chicken legs", so that amount of weight is a BIG difference for me, as most of it accumulates on my stomach...I've been in 36 jeans (high), as well as 33 (low).

Well, hopefully I can get down, and stay down at around the 174 area..that's my goal! Oh, also...I'm also looking for a good multivitamin..I can't take anything with any weird things in it (ginseng, all that other kind of stuff)..just the regular vitamins. Right now I take a "One a Day", but their only $4 for 100 tablets, so I'm sure there must be some better alternatives. Any suggestions, etc.. appreciated!

Where do you get your one a day so cheaply? I"m cheap myself and I take them, but I think I pay around $6-7 for 60 :(

Anyway on topic, goodluck! With that knee injury I'm surprised that you can run so much :p

Well, its not really a run...its a 45 minute fast walk...about 3 - 3.3 miles per hour on the treadmill. I don't want my heart rate to get above 165 at any time...so I can't go too fast.

It's actually not the "One a Day" name brand, its the WalMart brand "One a Day". Spring Valley I believe. I looked on the label, and they have the exact same vitamins, & exact same percentages. 3-4 dollars per 100 I believe.

Atenolol lowers your metabolism? I wish I had known that; my doctor put me on it about three years ago! How ironic that he said he'd take me off it if & when I lost weight!

On the other hand, he said my blood pressure is directly related to my obesity, so it's no wonder that he had to prescribe SOMETHING.

What happened to the knee?

12 months ago I had major surgery on both knees to repair BOTH patellar tendons as they ruptured completely off the patella.

Talk about re-hab!

Yes, the same time...........talk about pain. It was so bad, I was awake but in "another world". EMT's called it "shock", but I had no issues breathing or passing out/dying, I just had a constant stare at the wall, eyes wide open, would not blink and could only answer simply questions.

Truly the most horrific experience EVER!! I now know how it feels to be paralyzed in the legs, unable to move them. Horrid.

According to my cardiologist it does. He always asks me how I am doing on it with my weight. I told him that its harder to lose weight..easier to gain. He said that, that happens, but its better to be on the medicine for me, than to not be on it. Yes, atenolol is a blood pressure medicine also. I take it for a different reason though...its a betablocker, so it helps with my palpatations.

What happened to the knee?

Running on it, plus being a litte overweight on chicken legs is what happened. Not sure what was wrong, makes a loud grinding noise when I move it, and got very stiff & achy after just a few minutes exercising...like no cartiledge or something. Dr just said it wasn't bad enough for surgery, but to not run for 6 months...to try and swim instead (well I didn't have access to a pool, so that didn't work).
