Just wondering how important the 40/40/20 diet is. If my main goal is to lose fat, does it matter if im getting 60% from carbs, if my calaries are reduced? Today I only got about 38% protein but I got 204 g, which is kinda high. I weigh 196. Fat was 11% and the 51% or something was from carbs. I also went a little overboard by about 150 calories today. Thanks for the help.

The 40/40/20 macronutrient breakdown is by no means mandatory. It worked great for John, but that doesn't mean it is the only way to go. I personally feel that your overall calorie intake is the most important factor when trying to lose weight. You need to create a calorie deficit to lose weight and that is the bottom line. However, you should make sure all of your calories are coming from clean sources. Try eating whatever breakdown you like to start and tweak the macros as needed. Don't feel obligated to eat a 40/40/20 breakdown just because others are doing it. You have to find what works best for you! :)

Your total calories and how close your foods are to whole, unprocessed foods is far more important than the macronutrient ratio. Higher protein may allow you to eat higher calories but you can just as easily lose fat on a vegan diet with little protein as you can on a 40-40-20. People focus on ratios to make things easy for them - it takes part of the equation out. There is nothing magic about any ratio.
