I've made more strength gains in my first few weeks on a weight lifting routine than I did on a bodyweight training routine I did for my martial arts class. I enjoy lifting weights more as well. My martial arts instructor has a saying: "every day: 3 miles [of running], 100 pushups, 100 situps" Seems like a good way to maintain fitness, but if you're trying to lose weight, you're going to need more than that. Not weight loss or bulking. rwkates Wed, July 7th, 2004, 03:50 AM The basic calisthenics outlined could lead to good results, but it just depends on what one's goals are. Army and Marines basic training consists of a lot of push ups, sit-ups, chin-ups, and running, and it works well for them. Boxers do a lot of these exercises too, combined with lots of sparring in the ring and jumping rope, and they're some of the best athletes around. But the diet is essential too. Many wouldn't have the stamina to do the workout outlined in the routine on that site. And of course age plays a factor too. Someone who is 18 would have more luck than someone who's 50. Also there's not much variety and that type of workout would be hard to stick with over the long term. Another thing is that gym owners would be out of business if everyone did nothing but calisthenics and did away with cardio and weight training. |
