View Full Version : How do you eat on the job?
Jbroad572 Mon, July 5th, 2004, 04:20 PM A little spin off of my other post, but how many of you have a job that has 2 10 minute breaks and 1 30 minute lunch per 8 hours? I will be doing that, and I'm a slow eater, but need to have about 400-500 calories within 10 minutes. What do you do or recommend? Fix a sandwhich or 2 the night before and swallow it down along with some nuts or what?
brezman Mon, July 5th, 2004, 09:51 PM I get 2 15s and 30min. lunch, but I never take the lunch so I end up with a 15minute break every 3 hours.
Usually I have
1) Tuna and almonds (300 cal)
and
2) Protein shake and a tablespoon of flax oil and a small pack of beef jerky
(~300 cal)
Of course I eat right before I leave and right after I get home as well, and depending on where my workout is I might have a protein/carb meal but generally not.
Scale up for whatever amount of cals you need, I myself am 5'10" 158lbs.
THA_COOKIE_MONSTA Mon, July 5th, 2004, 10:12 PM I eat a sandwhich, an apple, and another piece of fruit/veggies (broccoli, orange, carrots etc). Beef jerkey is quick and easy. 1 serving is 140 calories and 25 grams of protein. Slim fast shakes (and Ensure) are quick and easy too....and nutritious.
metron9 Mon, July 5th, 2004, 10:41 PM I suggest making 2 packages of protein powder, one for 2 hours before lunch and one for 2 hours after lunch. Get one of those sports heavy duty water bottles and put the protein powder in it, add water when you are ready to drink it. For lunch I like to just get sliced chicken from the deli. It's about 7.50 a lb so I get 2 1/2 lbs and package it into 8 ounce servings and use one of those blue ice packs and a soft side insulated pack to carry everything in.. I also get some sliced swiss cheese for the fat in those meals. I use the one carb catsup from heinz and just roll up a piece with the catsup inside, so jucy and tasty and loaded with protein. I also keep some protein bars handy in case I forget to pack the chicken and that happens some times.
For breakfast I usually eat about 6 egg whites and 3 full eggs with some ham or sausage.

Sorry, :( take a look at the sugar in that slim fast and then dump it down the drain, I bet ensure is the same but I have not read the label. You are way better off to get alltheway powder and mix water with it at less than 1/4 the price for the protein you will get from it.

A paragraph from the above link:
"Secondly... there is so much sugar in these shakes and so little fiber, your blood sugar levels are going to go through the roof -- especially if you happen to be hyperinsulinemic, or hypoglycemic. So you can look forward to intense cravings, fatigue, unproductivity, mood swings, and more cravings."
Second, the beef jerky sounds good but its loaded with sugar too unless you make your own and the salt in it would blow your mind.
Third, carrots are high in sugar, stay away from them.
The broccoli is fine but protein from meat, chicken, turkey, tuna, deli beef once or twice a week would be better.
taffer Mon, July 5th, 2004, 11:12 PM thanks for the article metron9, good read!!
about carrots, their GL is so low, the sugar doesnt matter, their GI is about 50, and you would have to eat about 80-100grams of carrots to get 4grams of sugar
i dont work, but i goto school which is probly alot more flexable, my classes only go for an hour at a time so i can easily eat something between them, all i can say, tupperware is your best friend!

Taffer: I read that carrots are actually high GI.
taffer Mon, July 5th, 2004, 11:53 PM yeah there were a couple of studies on carrots, one said their GI was 92 and the other closer to 50, just the one that came out closer to 50, was from one of the leading GI professors in australia, so i'm going to trust that source
on the GI website it says "Carrots (Canada)" GI of 92 but "Carrots, raw (Romania)" gi of 16! (much much lower GL too)
so its very confusing im sure! but in the end, ever heard of carrots making someone fat!?! and seriously you really have to eat a TON of them to make any difference
if your still worried, maybe snacking on celery is a better option, alot of people think its a negative calorie food, because of all the energy it takes to chew/digest burns more calories than it supplies! celery is also great because its a good alkaline, which helps your acid/base balance, however you still gotta eat a ton of it(100-300g :o only like 40calories for that much tho, not including the whole chewing and digesting thing!), spinach is probly better for that reason if you dont feel like stuffing your face with celery all day! (not a bad idea though to keep hunger down)
French Spirit Tue, July 6th, 2004, 12:07 AM Well I like to steam some baby carrots and put them alongside my greenbeans. It's not that many, so regardless of the real GI, it probably doesn't hurt.
Jbroad572 Tue, July 6th, 2004, 12:39 AM I like some of those ideas. I guess I will do the protein shake and tuna sandwiches. My last meal for the day will be my lunch break more than likely, but I'll get hungry the last 4 hours, so maybe just a small snack on the last break. I have to have around 2600 cals a day, so each meal has to be around 400-450 cals, but with the bread and tuna and a shake I should be there. Just wanted to hear what you guys did. Thanks!
AMR Tue, July 6th, 2004, 12:46 AM Not sure how flexible your job is but can you take longer breaks and just stay later?

No, it's 4 weeks training. Pretty strict, so I hear.

I eat a protein bar for one of my in-between meals during the day. I also eat cottage cheese and fruit. All pretty quick.
guava Tue, July 6th, 2004, 01:46 AM on the GI website it says "Carrots (Canada)" GI of 92 but "Carrots, raw (Romania)" gi of 16! (much much lower GL too)
Okay, that's really weird.
I just had some Romanian carrots the other day.
Let me tell you about these carrots. The inside part of them is like a piece of wood. I'm not kidding. They are pretty much inedible. (My girls won't touch them.) I've quit buying carrots because they are dulling my knives. And they should be in season now too. Ah, it just occurred to me, the carrots I've been buying in the winter must be imported. Stay away from Romanian carrots.
I'll wait till I get to Canada in a few weeks and buy the carrots there, even if they have a higher GI at least I can digest them.
Buchy Tue, July 6th, 2004, 09:05 AM Think how many calories you'll burn trying to chew those Romanian carrots!!! :p
RMe Tue, July 6th, 2004, 09:34 AM The best thing for on the go meals are balanced Energy bars. You don't need refrigeration and you can grab them on the go when you aren't sure about the next meal. Certain ones are better than others as snacks. I like Zone perfect, Balance, and Designer Bars like Detour or OneWay. They are not as high in carbs as some of the other brands, but have a good balance for a snack. Now if you really need energy for hard activities then go for clif, powerbar or something similar. Balance bars tend to stick to 40-30-30 and Zone are pretty close. If you shop at Sams you can buy them by the box or get them at Wal-Mart for under $1. They work for me and it's the closest thing to candy that is good for you. Warning: some are nasty so try different ones to find out what you like.
Skoorb Tue, July 6th, 2004, 10:31 AM Meal replacement bars are ok. Also you can get empty drink bottles and fill with milk powder and either a meal replacement powder or whey protein. I personally pack all my lunch into a small desk cooler and just eat whatever fruit/cottage cheese, etc. the meal calls for. 10 min is more than enough!

 Well, I've lost 25 lbs. And I found that slim fast did a better job at keeping me full than the 2 packets of instant oatmeal that I'm eating now. I understand that there are better options, but its hard to whip out a skillet and oven to make the perfect meal while you're at work.
...I guess different things work for different people.
And all this extreme stuff about carrots being bad for you is rediculous....ITS A FREAKIN' CARROT!!! Don't underestimate the value of your veggies.
Buchy Tue, July 6th, 2004, 12:22 PM On topic: I cook some chicken breasts and freeze them, then defrost one the night before work and take it in for lunch with salad (cabbage salad). I take a small tin of tuna, a ceral bar and apple or banana. Also buy packet of mixed nuts for one in-between meal.
Cursim Tue, July 6th, 2004, 02:17 PM I would say a couple of pieces of fruit, or a large protein bar for those short breaks. Some of the people on the boards may disagree with me, and I'm damn sure they're more experienced, but when I don't have time for a meal those things taste good and fill you up good.

i remember reading on another forum, that some guy forgot to drink a slim fast shake once, and it turned into a hard jelly like substance
so really its just setting in your stomach to make you feel less hungry
also as the article says, its just sugar-milk :p
you would probly be better off adding maple syrup to milk!
Jbroad572 Wed, July 7th, 2004, 04:17 AM I could definitely eat protein bars, but I heard they were only glorified candy bars and weren't good for you.
