View Full Version : Nice ripped physique possible on a Veggie diet?
TokyoElbow January 22nd, 2004, 05:28 AM Im a vegitarian who follows the Fit For Life Diet, which basically means I dont eat dairy products and I dont mix my protein meals with my carbo meals.
I split my food groups so that I only eat veg and carbs or protein and vegs. plus nothing but fruit in the morning. Its a great diet for losing unwanted weight but I havnt tried excercising on this diet yet.
I wonder if this diet is ok with a similar programme that you (John) do.?
Jono January 22nd, 2004, 09:51 AM i think it would be work as long as you get enough protein in your diet.
and i would definatly suggest to supplement with whey protein!

There's an article (http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/mahler53.htm) on bodybuilding.com specifically about being Vegan and getting big! I'm semi-veggie (I don't eat anything that walks), but with the specialized diet required for fat loss and muscle gain going fully vegan shouldn't be too bad, right? :D
rubberbandman January 22nd, 2004, 05:32 PM whey protein would be a dairy product...sort of
I think there are soy shakes and junk but heard they taste terrible
TokyoElbow January 22nd, 2004, 08:51 PM I eat a lot of raw tofu , thats high protein, wouldnt that be enough?

if you do a search, you 'll find several vegetarian bodybuilders online. I'm considering it myself - heart disease runs in my family, and as I'm sure you well know, vegetarians rarely suffer from heart ailments.
Fudgam February 7th, 2004, 10:37 PM Raw Tofu...isnt that kind of contradictory?
daveo February 7th, 2004, 11:52 PM Raw Tofu...isnt that kind of contradictory? Clearly you don't have much experience with tofu...
While technically it's contradictory, the fact remains that many Asian cultures (and Western imitators) take tofu and continue to cook it. For example, seasoning then deep frying tofu is popular in China. Here ('http://www.nsknet.or.jp/~chrkaji/yasuko/recipe/027_e.html') is a recipie for Agedashi dofu, from a Japanese website.
I'd call that cooked tofu. I'd call the stuff in the tub of water raw tofu.
For anybody who wants to be really hardcore, here's a make your own tofu ('http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/~hansen/recip/tofu.html') recipie. Yikes. I'm not even reading through that one.

sickpuppy February 8th, 2004, 12:24 PM I am no expert, but i thought I read somewhere that you can't get all nine essential ammino acids from any vegetarian source, they are all missing at least one of the nine. Therefore your body will break down your own muscle tissue in order to replace that ammino acid. So in order to get all nine, you need to do food combination, like whatever ammino acid is missing in carrots may be found in beans, so you would have to eat these together(just an example, don't know for sure). And you want all nine essentials at every meal, so your body doesn't break down your hard earned muscle.
Skipernicus February 9th, 2004, 03:52 PM ... mostly due to the longevity that vegetarians seem to enjoy.
I was a vegan for 3 years, and it seemed that I always had energy, but I was always either getting hungry, or looking for a bathroom. It has it's own set of advantages and disadvantages. i don't think my health declined any despite 3 years of lacking ESSENTIAL aminos...
skelk February 10th, 2004, 07:49 PM Woody Harrelson is a Vegan and he seems to have managed.
d8ed February 10th, 2004, 07:54 PM managing is one thing.. getting big and ripped is another :) plus the guy's bald and smokes weed like it's going out of style. i would NOT use him as an example really..
zamboni February 11th, 2004, 02:45 AM Soy protein is the yum. If you drink soy milk, you shouldn't have any beef with soy protein powder
zamboni February 11th, 2004, 02:47 AM Someone touched on this earlier, but its always important to get your protein from a variety of sources. Doesn't matter if you're vegan or not. Try kidney beans, I know a lot of regular lifters who scarf those down like they're going out of style when they're bulking.

You get get a wealth of protien from a vegetarian or even vegan diet. Beans (of which there are a million varieties). Potatoes, whole wheat breads, nuts spinach, soy milk, nut butters, kale - almost all food has some sort of protein in it. But of course, they have carbs too, so it complicates your bookkeeping.
