View Full Version : Calories burned while fishing
dstaver Thu, July 1st, 2004, 07:41 PM Lately I've been fishing a lot, so I thought I'd add the energy burned while doing this to my spreadsheet so I could adjust my food intake accordingly like I do with other excercises. I've checked a couple of online calculators now, and they say the energy burned during four hours of fishing is 1100 calories! Can this be correct? It seems like a lot... I'm talking about the kind of fishing where you stand on the shore casting the line out into the water, not just sitting on my ass in a boat all day long... This also includes walking around alot to find good fishing spots. Generally I'm pretty tired when the day is over, and can really feel it in my legs.

dso Sat, July 3rd, 2004, 04:09 PM Heh, yea I don't know too many people who lose weight fishing.
TheLemonSong Sat, July 3rd, 2004, 04:52 PM Flyfishing I could see as cardio...but I would say even if you break a sweat doin' it it doesn't mean you should adjust your kcal intake.
dstaver Sat, July 3rd, 2004, 08:02 PM I know, I wasn't neccessarily saying this was very efficient cardio or anything ;) Just curious about how much we can trust the values of all these calculators for calories burned during various excercises.
Anyone know the sources of the data in these calculators? How were they measured in the first place? Software like DietPower has got hundreds of excercises listed, everything from coal mining to herding sheep, and encourage you to list them and adjust your calorie intake accordingly. Did they actually go out and measure a sheep farmer or are they just approximations and guesswork?
jRS Sat, July 3rd, 2004, 09:05 PM I think you'll be fine. Chances are you can do other things than sitting down/ sleep when not weight lifting without having to add kcal. If you were a sheep farmer or working in a coal mine on the other hand...
If you really feel you need it, eat an apple.
Trout fishing?

That's 275 cals per hour. It seems like an overestimation, unless you are a very big person. If it were me, I wouldn't even count it.

I thought it sounded high too. In fact, some calculators listed as much as 375 calories per. hour. Makes me wonder where the numbers came from.
I usually walk for an hour or two carrying a heavy backpack on my fishing trips to get to the good spots though, which could account for why I feel tired when I get home, but once I'm there I will mostly stand still, casting the line out into the water.
In any case, it sure beats sitting in front of the computer all evening. Feels really good to get out and get some fresh air, I eat leass when I'm out fishing as I'm too busy to think about food, and if I'm lucky I get a completely free source of quality protein to cook for dinner when I get home :)

PeteBDawg Tue, July 6th, 2004, 06:39 PM Actually, fishing is by far the most efficient form of calorie burning there is.
God doesn't subtract time spent fishing from the length of a man's life. That's common knowledge.
So, say you burned a thousand calories in an hour of running and two hundred in an hour of fishing.
The hour of fishing doesn't count, so the rate of calorie burning for the running is 1000 cal/hr, but the rate for fishing is infinite.
