When doing military presses (barbell or dumbbells) should you have any back support? Is it okay to do them without sitting on a bench that goes up 90 degrees? Does it matter?

I found as I got heavy, sitting was putting the wrong kind of pressure on my lower back (with or without support)... since I started doing it standing, it has been better. :tu: (I think standing is the "real way" to do military press anyway.) opela77 Mon, February 2nd, 2004, 03:15 PM bump on standing military press... If you have lower back problems then stick with the support but I find that standing not only hits the shoulders but hits the core as well. brownguy Mon, February 2nd, 2004, 03:18 PM I do military press standing in the squat rack. That's a good idea. :tu: I'll do them standing up from now on. The only problem will be when I have to load 45s on each side...the ceiling will be too low. But I don't think I'll be complaining when I finally get there. :db: NME Mon, February 2nd, 2004, 03:31 PM I do military press standing in the squat rack. Bingo. :tu: Banditfist Mon, February 2nd, 2004, 03:46 PM Free standing and sitting with back support both give me different feelings. I love free standing. Just have to be sure that you are not arching your back too much. Keep good form. map200uk Tue, February 3rd, 2004, 05:21 AM Free standing and sitting with back support both give me different feelings. I love free standing. Keep good form. good point... i was about to say this when people stand in general, form is harder to keep, as its well natural to arch your back a bit, but when your using heavy weights it's easy to arch it a bit too much Mark |
