View Full Version : How much sugar is too much?
Shane Mon, February 2nd, 2004, 12:45 PM Hello everybody. I'm a big fan of fruits and juices, but these things have LOADS of sugar in them. For example, I visited several sites looking for how many grams of sugar are in a large orange and I came to 14 grams as an average. The first time I used a spreadsheet to keep track of food intake I had 81 grams of sugar, mostly from milk and OJ. I've cut out the milk and OJ for the most part and since then the lowest amount of sugar I've had is 31.5 grams. Is that still too much? Are sugars created equal? Are sugars necessarily bad?
Two Step Mon, February 2nd, 2004, 03:18 PM All sugars are not created equal! All natural sugars from ripe fruits are fine (just don't consume in excess quantities). Refined, simple sugars like common table sugar are extemely bad for you as they cause insulin spikes which can eventually lead to numerous medical problems. Also keep in mind that many companies try to hide "sugar" in the ingredient lists by using scientific names -- so watch out! :eat:
HunkOLove Mon, February 2nd, 2004, 03:23 PM If the ingredients list:
Fructose, High Fructose, Corn Syryp, Corn Starch and obviously Sugar...there is sugar in them thar hills. There are many more labels I'm sure other people can think of more. :spaz:

Shane, I am the same way, love fruits, especially bananas and apples (oranges may be a little high). I eat one of each just about every day. When I was looking at John's spreadsheets, he barely had anything other than a half a glass of fruit juice. The only sugar in my diet is from fruits and skim milk, and I average around 70-90 grams per day.
I have read that John has since said he would have consumed more calories if he could start over, wonder if that would have included more fruits?
Anyway, here is a nice article (http://www.teenbodybuilding.com/alton10.htm) that is "pro-sugar from fruit". I am no nutritionist, but if you are maintaining your exercise & diet well (in terms of percentages & caloric intake), I can't see why a natural foods like fruit would be bad (even with elevated amounts of NATURAL sugar.

Nope. :)

You may not have noticed yet, but for any pro-X article you can find at least 1 anti-X article. Go to bodybuilding.com and search around for sugar. You'll find a wide mix of "All sugar is evil!" to "What's wrong with the sugar Nazi's?"
So I'll continue my trend and follow those who have acheived results, rather than accepting what my flabby self thinks is right. That means I've cut my sugar down considerably (< 30g on cardio days, < 60g on lifting days). The sugar on cardio days is early in the morning, 50% of it around 7:00 AM, then the other 50% spread out through the day.
The sugar on lifting days is a result of a banana with the protein shake. I've seen quite a few who've had good results with that, so I'll give it a try.
My $0.02
Sake Ninja Thu, February 26th, 2004, 02:32 PM The other healthy stuff in fruit is worth the added sugar IMO. You won't have half a pound for eating a few pieces of fruit a day. As said before, moderation is key.
My personal favorites are sliced apples and bananas. I've always been annoyed trying to eat a full apple, so I just take a knife to it. Voila! Apple chips
Jim Thu, February 26th, 2004, 04:13 PM Fruit isn't bad. Refined table sugar would be.
It all depends on how much you eat. I eat a banana a day, maybe 2. And I'm fine.
The only time I use table sugar is in cups of tea when I need to relax, but I'm switching to something else next shopping trip.

I really like Spenda, I don't know if it is available over there though. I use it in my decaf green tea and also a packet in my protein shakes to bring out the chocolate flavor a bit more.
I have lost a lot of weight while still having a pear or apple every day. Probably kind of depends on your body type. Everyones body processes food differently. Experiment and see what works for you. One thing that I love that halts my weightloss completely is tortilla chips. Now I only have them on rare occasions.
