A public service announcement on foot care...
When I was overweight, my feet used to kill me. They ached, creaked and swelled constantly. Over the course of my weight loss, that has lessened until recently. For some reason, they've flared up and won't quit hurting. Walking on the treadmill had become a nightmare because my arches needed more support and my heels hurt too often.
I went to my podiatrist again this morning. They gave me a set of temporary orthotics and a shot of cortisone in each heel to help with the swelling and pain. The shots weren't so pleasant, but my feet are starting to feel much better.
On to the orthotics. If you have problems with arch support, see a podiatrist! They put the orthotics in my work shoes for me and wow... my feet feel 1000% better walking around. I feel no pressure in or on my heels, and my arches have support! It feels almost like someone is massaging my feet as I walk because of the inserts. Walking is all-of-a-sudden comfortable again instead of agonizing.
I am under doctor's orders to take it easy on my feet for the next 72 hours. No gym time at all (which will be my longest stint without exercise since April 2003!). I have to ice-bath them tonight and continue to wear the orthotics until they can cast my feet for a custom pair, which will be made of graphite for athletic purposes and they're supposed to last up to 10 years.
I can't tell you the sigh of relief I'm feeling right now! Seriously, if you're having any foot-aches, get to a podiatrist. My doctor worked a miracle in the hour I was there this morning...
