View Full Version : Trying to be cool...

So it's like... 1am this past Saturday. The street races had broken up, the corner at 50 & Orange was dead... and every freakin' cop has to tailgate me as if my car weren't enough of a billboard saying "look at me", I'm going to do donuts in front of the police station. Do they think we can afford $30K sportscars yet have the IQ of a sack of marbles (I cleaned up the analogy :) ). Yeah, I AM out to do no good, but it's not like an episode of the "Fast 'n the Furious". Really, it isn't like that, I swear. Trust me. So eff it. Cops notwithstanding, I go cruising anyway.

I go to the top of the parking garage at UCF, my Alma Mater... I light up a cigar and just start thinking. Then I start looking at the car. I whip out the new camera. I start playing. Then I put it on time lapse, set it on the tripod and set it to snapping.

These were the results. There's a ton more, I just don't feel like editing them. They are as much a goof as they are fun, and kinda cool, or so I thought. I was going for that Jimmy Dean "rebel" look... and failed miserably, but that was the idea. I wanted to have photos of me with my car, they guy I am today, who just paid it off (my dad, who recently passed away of cancer, had similar photos of himself with his prize, his 1968 302 Mustang notchback when he was about my age. I also own a 1992 Mustang notchback that I'm going to recreate my dad's photos from. I'll share them when that happens!).

They're a couple of weeks early, but it's also getting close to the one-year anniversary of my initial 37-lb. weight loss. I still kick myself for not taking before's... sorry folks, I can't show you where I started right now.

I've said since day one I wanted a body as high performance as my car. I'm not quite there yet, but it's getting closer... oh, and I'm not nearly as irresponsible as I sound. I can count on one hand the number of times I got into races on the streets... and in 12 years of driving and (on the track) racing of cars... I know how to handle high-perf cars.

-Roger

P.S... anyway... as usual, I'm the freaking windbag. Here they are.

I was going to make a Paul Walker joke, but then I thought better of it.

Look good, man; though, they do remind me of some poster shot I saw for the Fast and the Furious.

It's definitely cool that you're now creating a family tradition, doing shots like your father. :tu:

The photos are excellent only problem for me is that i have never known rebels to wear sandals. Black boots might have been a better choice. But other than that you look great and so does your sweet sweet car.

That was soooo PUI (Posting Under the Influence, for those who don't know). I had two shots of 25-year old whiskey last night to wind down (what a day it was) and lookie what I do.

The nice thing is... I'm getting to be one cheap date! Two shots of whiskey threw me for a loop... yet somehow manage to be at my desk at 7am. Made three trips to the water cooler already. Ugh. Needless to say I didn't make cardio this morning.

All I had on was the sandles... and I wasn't driving home in the middle of the night to get different shoes!

Sorry to hear about your father.

I think the pictures look great, but I must admit that after reading about the sandals, they kinda bug me. :p I didn't even see that until it was pointed out, but it's...obvious...

Now seriously dude, that kind of car NEEDS a beautiful woman lying on the hood. In a bikini. Preferably oiled up... Next time, Gadget, next time...

I must also say that you look scarily like a friend of mine, only older, and more mature.

One step ahead of you. That's my wife... these shots were taken as she was prepping for her first competition.

Hope I don't get in any trouble for those...

Dude, I specifically said "on the hood". :D

Now I forgive you, and I promise I won't tell anyone. How long have you two been married?

Ain't no climbin' on that hood, buddy! That car lives in an air-conditioned garage under a cover except for all but the clearest of days/nights.

We met in February of 1992 at the tender age of 18 and have been inseparable since. We were married on May 19th, 2001.

Had to throw that in for the pride factor.

Aw, come on! You can't say that you never thought about it, can you? :D

That's a lot of time together. I sure hope I find someone to spend my life with. I've never been fascinated by being with as many girls as you can, I just want one special girl, that's it.

Ok, ok! Next year, no sandals. Hell, I may re-do them next time I'm out with boots on just for you guys.

Lemon... I put the camera on its tripod and set it to snap a shot every 20 seconds. After a minute or two, I didn't know when it was taking pictures... I don't exactly know what I was looking at. I was smoking a cigar the whole time, you just can see it in any of the pics I posted.

And the sandals... I can't powershift in boots. Try racing a six speed without powershifting... it ain't happenin', at least if you want to win. I can powershift in those sandals. When I tech in at the tracks, I'm wearing boots then I change to sandals; I wasn't at the track that night so I didn't have my boots with me.

My current crush celebrity crush is Tara Reid. If she walked up and offered explicit sexual favors to me, I might consider letting her crawl on the hood. Other than that, you have to realize that my car has a shelf full of show and racing trophies. A car that sees both show and racing duty (and is white with white leather interior) can be a harrowing piece of equipment to keep in award-winning condition. Five years after leaving the lot with her (she had a whopping 0.9 miles on the odo when I took ownership) she's still winning trophies wherever I go.

So hell yeah, if I were less anal, I'd have women all over that thing. Chicks dig the thing. I frequent the local Hooters car shows often... the girls always want to pose on the car because many other owners will let the girls climb on their cars. I have so many pics of Hooters girls with that damn thing that it's old hat. It's other people who want pics of girls with the car. Go figure.

How come my sh~t ends up being so long typed? I type too friggin' fast...

Is the car still stock or have you done any mods to it? What kinds of races do you enter? I love the adrenaline rush from racing.

Crotch rockets are great... but I know too many people who've got a limp from those things. I have friends that used to race 200+ MPH drag bikes. I, personally, will get my speed-fix on four wheels.

No, my cars are nowhere near stock.

My Mustang (http://www.cffb.net/_junk/P7240003.JPG) is a converted 4-cylinder, built on a 1985 chassis, using 1992 body skin and the interior from a 1998 Cobra right down to the power seats. It's meant mainly for autocrossing because of the road-race suspension (all Steeda with Tokico 5-way adjustables). If you can do it, it's been done to this car. The weakest link is the motor itself, which is a basically stock engine procured from a wrecked '95 Mustang GT. I transplanted it, put an E303 cam in it, carbureted it (easier to tune) and I've been driving it daily for over two years now, no problems. On slicks and skinnies, it ran a 13.01 @ 101.5 in the quarter. Makes 299-HP/323-TQ. Very fun car to drive every day. I'm getting it painted very soon... just not 100% sure when. I call it "Bride of Frankenstein" because of the black body and white hood.

My Trans Am is a luxury car with 440-HP. Every creature comfort works like the day I bought it and its appearance is 100% stock, right down to re-using the stock tailpipes on the new exhaust system. But nothing mechanical has remained untouched on the car. It is fully modified from stem to stern and putting down about as much power as you can get from a stock-cube LS1. If I want more power, I have to build a stroker (a 385-cid large bore is in the works, should make around 520). It's primarily a straight-line car, but it does exceptionally well in the twisties for a reasonably stock-suspensioned WS6. My wife kicks much ass in that car when we take it to the autocross... she actually handles it better than I do. Quarter mile is 11.68 @ 118.5.

I also have a full size 1973 Pontiac Grandville convertible, 1 of 227, the ONLY one made in triple white. It's a land barge, but it's so much fun. I'm going to complete the restoration and put it back on the road after the Mustang gets painted.

Oh, and every scrap of work on my cars, except for a little exhaust welding, has been done by yours truly. The only other thing I don't do is paint/bodywork... that's an art form.

As for racing, I used to race quarter-mile and autocross all the time. I've gotten to drive so many different great cars over the years. I've always been a very, very adept driver in any car and as a result, many of my friends (who have bankrolls bigger than I'll ever know) have asked me to co-drive their cars at the autocross. They like to see what the car can do with someone who's willing to push it... and I'm willing to abuse a car if the owner is willing to let me. Hey, it ain't mine! And if you can afford it... you can afford to fix it. Half the time, if I break it, I end up assisting in the surgery to correct the problem anyway. I've raced Lotus's, 6-speed shifter karts, Triumphs, a Ferrari, a 650-hp supercharged Viper GTS, Mustangs, a turbocharged Miata, and several others that escape me. I spun the Viper out once! Too much power, WAY too much torque. You wanna talk about scary? Spin out a car that's worth around $100K with modifications. I needed new underwear after that one because I thought I was going into a ditch (the only reason I was close to a ditch was because autocrosses often happen in parking lots because speeds are relatively low - usually 60-mph at best).

I have been known to pop up in places where street races are known to be picked up. But I'm only jumping in if the cash is right and the other driver is stupid enough. It doesn't happen often, and as I said... I can count my races on one hand still. But I've won enough to cover the cost of all the mods on my Trans Am! :D Lost once. That sucked.

So I love racing. The best rush is when you put that helmet on and you're about to get the flag/green light... your heart is pounding, it's just you and your machine, waiting to see what you can do!! Speed is my drug of choice. And every time I turn the key in the T/A, it's like getting a fix.

Awesome man, it sounds like you take great pride in it and also really take care of it. I'm the same way with my WS6 and it pains me to have it outside all the time. Right now it's getting drenched by rain. :(

My WS6 is all stock but I'll have it paid off in October and I've been trying to figure out what to do with it. There are so many options and routes to go it makes it a bit difficult to decide on what to do. :D

When you're ready, let's talk.

My best friend and I just completed a 427 Camaro SS from the new darton-sleeving process LS1 block. The car put down 582HP/574TQ. It's not broken in yet, so we can't go to the track. His Camaro is the only one from 1999 done in triple white. That car is a beast and we expect it'll run low 10's if he can drive it. As I said... I've driven 600+ HP cars, and I want nothing to do with it. Building them is fun... driving them is scary.

We're starting on a new project this winter - a pro-street, fuel-injected mini-tubbed (possibly fully tubbed, not sure yet) twin turbo'd Chevy S-10. We have the truck and are working (very slowly) already. I refuse to drive it. I'll start it. Putt around in it. But not race it. I expect it'll be an 8-second ride when we're done with it!

You definetaly got the italian gansta look. Next time wear a black or charcoal gry suit, some shades and boots. Your wife WOW! I see what you mean about the eyes. Truth is you are right about driving with boots on isnt the greatest of experiences its almost impossible to get the feel of the pedals. We want more pics. Indeed I think you and john should have a comp where you pose infront of your cars. lol
