cwbolton Tue, April 21st, 2009, 02:34 PM John we all respect you and your decision so much, I know times are tough and comments like what's the point seem so easy to understand but do not give up it's so easy to say oh maybe I'll cheat once in a while and then take it that bit further and further to the point where you don't even go to the gym anymore, don't let this happen we all believe in you you have all the support you need here and at your home
Stay strong and on track my friend :)
gitoutmyi Tue, April 21st, 2009, 11:48 PM I am on the same page as you John (well I was a few months ago). Long story short, I have been sticking to my lifting over the past 3 months, eating more to a template, not a stict plan, having fun with friends at times, eating pizza or some other things I enjoy here and there, and I still continue to lose fat on a regular basis. I am not even on what I consider a cut; it's more of a recomp/maintenance with zero cardio and I am the most pleased I have ever been with my physique in my entire life.
Point of my rant is that I too used to tell my friends I can't do this or that at almost all times and I saw much success during that period, but I still see results and success with a more relaxed meal plan and get to enjoy myself much more often.
Good luck with the rest of your cut :tu: You'll be fine.
joe6pk Wed, April 22nd, 2009, 10:03 AM When I talk about balance, I'm talking about reaching a a symbiosis between my everyday life, working out and eating right. I'm sure that finding this harmony is going to require some trial and error on my part, but I feel that my goals are definitely obtainable.
Your update yesterday was really great, John. I don't know if you've been following my journal lately, but we just had a discussion on this very topic, since I've been feeling very much the same way. :)
What i've discovered is that the approach of moderation is often just as challenging as the "all-or-nothing" approach. It requires a certain amount of discipline to know where to draw the line. Also cheating seems to have an effect on my body where the more I cheat, the more I crave junk food. It's a strange effect. But being able to incorporate fitness into lifestyle and achieve a balance is really the ultimate goal.
I know that we have good stickies about these topics (Nutrition for a healthy weight (http://forums.johnstonefitness.com/showthread.php?t=42001) and Nutrition for body recomposition (http://forums.johnstonefitness.com/showthread.php?t=41991)), but what about a new forum - Maintenance/Re-composition - where people can discuss about all the challenges and benefits of finding balance between fitness and the rest of the life.

Specialbear Wed, April 22nd, 2009, 06:00 PM I very rarely ever post here but check updates everyday and am SOOOO happy to see that your view of fitness is changing. When i was OCD about training for a good 4-5 years (age 17-22) I was constantly reading about training on multiple sites, and, it is only before I start a 'real' job (aka medical school) have I realized that working out should be FUN and a HOBBY. It is only a lifestyle if you can make money off of it.
Who knows...maybe a month from now you may change your mind and go 100% or maybe even bulk up some more or take some time off. What matters is that every since you started this journey, you have given it 100% and that you have all the information you need to do whatever you want.
comp818 Thu, April 23rd, 2009, 03:12 AM John, where can I find your current training routine?

I think I like the idea of a maintenance forum. Let me give it some thought. Anyone else with thoughts on this?

I don't know that there would be enough content for an entire sub-forum, but perhaps there could be an official "maintenance & lifestyle balance" megathread in the general h&f forum?

It seems like maintenance would fall under "general health and fitness".

Yeah, lack of content is a concern. I like to keep the number of forums to a minimum, and I definitely don't want to add one that sees very little traffic.
It seems like maintenance would fall under "general health and fitness".
I'm cooling to the idea the more I think about it...
needachange Thu, April 23rd, 2009, 08:13 AM I don't know I seem to think that the "maitenance section" might fair pretty well. I've been on this forum for a few years now and it seems that most people on here do just that. Try to live a balanced healthy lifestyle and work out. There's not too many people (maybe a handful) that I can think of on here who actually give 100% all the time. Even then no one's competing or anything. The only people I know of that "compete" are Mastover, Merk and Maya. Everyone else just seems to balance their busy lives with lifting or cardio as a healthy lifestyle. I wouldn't consider this a "bodybuilding" forum.

Yeah, but most of the people posting about "maintenance" are doing so in their journals. The vast majority of "how-to" type posts (newbies and regulars both) are about either losing fat or gaining muscle/strength.

Well I don't have a journal or read journals so :p  Just messin.
I dunno I guess everyones different. I wonder how many other people on here don't either have or read others journals.
karatetricker Thu, April 23rd, 2009, 04:45 PM This is my opinion on the new forum question:
Questions about losing fat should be in the Fat Loss forum, irrespective of whether the person asking the question(s) wishes to be 100% perfect or lose fat as part of a balanced lifestyle. Similarly, questions about gaining muscle should be in the Bulking (although perhaps "Muscle Gain" would be a more appropriate term for those not looking to do a formal bulk yet still put on muscle) forum, even if the person hopes to gain muscle without eating 100% clean.
The only "problem" we run into is people often respond assuming that the person posting wants to be 100% perfect in his or her diet and fitness program. I do my best to chime in when I can for those who I don't get the feeling are looking for the all or nothing approach. The only real benefit of a separate forum for those who want advice reaching their goals as part of a more balanced lifestyle is it would be automatically known that is the goal and eliminate some of the debate(s) between other members who try and help -- where one person insists the OP must be 100% perfect and the other person argues such is not the case.
Does that make sense?
Reno_1ted Fri, April 24th, 2009, 08:14 AM I dont think it needs another forum. All the info is there, and its up to the individual how they use it.

Some of my co-workers/bosses know about my site, and I suspect that several of them visit it, but the subject doesn't come up very often.

g8trmike Tue, April 28th, 2009, 09:00 AM John,
I am fighting that same battle right now. It doesn't matter what the battle is, it is draining emotionally and physically. I fight off the demons every day and sometimes every hour of the day. It is a struggle to get out of bed and hit the gym (I always go first thing in morning before work). I have made it to the gym every morning these past couple of weeks, but I must admit, my heart isn't always in it - and it shows in my log book! I have discovered that I am an emotional eater and have found that it has been a real struggle to eat clean during this time. Hats off to you John for keeping it real!

John Stone Fri, May 1st, 2009, 11:36 AM Something that has been a growing passion of mine over the past few years is gardening. I find working in the yard very relaxing and extremely satisfying. I just love being out in my gardens, especially first thing in the morning and in the evening just before sunset.
Florida had an unusually harsh winter, and many of the plants and palms were seriously damaged. This spring I've had to put forth an extraordinary amount of care and attention in order to nurse everything back to health.
The hard work has paid off, and almost everything has either recovered, or is well on the way to a full recovery.
I thought I'd share some pictures I took this week.
Here's the center bed at the NW corner of my house. In this bed I have a pindo palm set against a backdrop of rose bushes. In the foreground there are red and purple verbenas, ilex shillings and indian hawthorne.
Just behind the center bed is an eye-shaped bed that has a magnolia tree, dwarf mexican petunias and dwarf nandinas.
30888
The roses are really going crazy. I fertilize them with rose food, epsom salts and bone meal. I supplement these quarterly granular feedings with liquid Miracle Gro feedings every other weekend (actually I hit everything in my gardens with Miracle Gro every 2 weeks--it really makes a huge difference).
30868
The magnolia has only been in the ground for a little over a year, so I'm very surprised to see that it is about to bloom (it normally takes around 3 years for a transplanted magnolia to bloom). So far I can see about a dozen blooms that are about to open up.
30865
The dwarf mexican petunias were badly damaged this winter, but they have come back magnificently! The foliage looks great, and they are starting to bloom. There will be many more blooms than this very soon. I love this plant because the blooms are so delicate looking, but they last practically forever!
30864
Here's the bed to the right of the front walkway. In this bed I have a large queen palm surrounded by loropetalum and dwarf nandinas. Under the window (and not really visible in this shot) are texas star ligustrum. There is also a duc de rhone azalea back there. In the foreground I have mostly agapanthus (aka "blue lily of the nile") and some iris.
30898
The agapanthus have only just begun to bloom. There are dozens and dozens of blooms about to open! Here's one that just opened--wow!
30862
Here's the left side of the walkway. In this bed I have a bunch of red and purple verbenas, ilex shillings, indian hawthorne and a low dense topiary surrounded by dwarf mexican petunias. Closer to the house and around the sago are several texas star ligustrum, some iris, a few more agapanthus, another duc de rhone azalea and some more loropetalum.
30882
Here's the view along the north side of the house. In the background there are two large queen palms. My queen palms (I have 4) were damaged this winter, but thankfully they are all OK and now making a nice recovery!
Behind the queen palms (lining the house) are a row of azalea bushes. They are done blooming for the year, but they looked incredible about a month ago--hundreds and hundreds of beautiful pink blooms!
The triple roebelenii palm (back corner where the house meets the fence) lost all its fronds this winter, and I think one and possibly even two of the trunks are dead. Only time will tell. I may have to replace it.
Other plants in that bed include firecracker plants (they were hurt badly this winter, but are coming back nicely and will bloom very soon!), another low dense topiary, golden globe durantas, indian hawthorne, ilex shillings, iris and bunch of red and purple verbenas.
Lining the sidewalk are four canary island date palms.
30866
Finally, here's the north side of the house from the back of my lot. This bed features another pindo palm, which is flanked by two cassia plants. There are also two beautiful dark red-flowering crepe myrtles that will be in bloom in about 4-6 weeks. There are several more rose bushes here, and the dark green ground cover (which is still spreading) is called asiatic jasmine. I really love how it looks! The jasmine should fully cover this entire bed (basically the length of the fence) by the end of this growing season, so I won't ever need to mulch this section of the garden again!

John Stone Fri, May 1st, 2009, 01:05 PM awesome pics of the garden. Any books/websites you recommend if someone is trying to get into Gardening?
Believe it or not, I've never read a book about gardening.
I'm lucky enough to be friends with a professional landscape designer who also happens to have a nationally syndicated gardening radio show (Vince Sims, aka The Garden Rebel (http://www.gardenrebel.com/)). Vince did the landscape design and installation at this house and at my old house, too. Most of what I know came from Vince and from the Internet. Check out Vince's incredible home garden (slideshow with music (http://www.gardenrebel.com/php/vince_slideshow.php?m=on) - I took all those pictures while visiting his house one day). His home and gardens are astonishing.
I can't say I have any favorite gardening web sites; I usually just do searches when I have a question about something. I do tend to wind up at the garden web forums (http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/) quite a lot, though. Many of the people there are incredibly knowledgeable.

How am I doing? :o
Nice edging upkeep on that grass John :tu:
Thanks! I really take a lot of pride in how I maintain my lawn and gardens. My neighbors and lots of lawn care companies are always stopping me to ask why I do choose to do all the work myself. The simple reason is because no one I pay would ever take the care that I do. "If you want a job done right..."
Chopaholic Sat, May 2nd, 2009, 06:04 PM Do you use a square-edge shovel to maintain your edging? Or?
Ty! :)
John Stone Sat, May 2nd, 2009, 06:10 PM Do you use a square-edge shovel to maintain your edging? Or?
A shovel would take forever! I use an Echo gasoline powered straight shaft string trimmer, and even that takes a good amount of time. I make two passes along all the continuous concrete edging: the first pass I hold the string trimmer mostly horizontal (angled slightly down towards the edging), and on the second pass I hold the trimmer vertically to make a nice "cut" between the concrete edging and the grass.
Along the sidewalks and driveway I use an Echo gasoline straight shaft power edger.

I think the main thing I'm feeling right now is relief. After all the time, money and sweat I invested in the yard last year, it was heartbreaking when winter turned everything brown. It looked like a wasteland out there a few months ago.
You could go one further and draw something on the side of your house, art.
Yeah, I'm not sure I could slide that past our HOA.

John Stone Sun, May 3rd, 2009, 08:18 AM A couple more... :)
I was waiting for the magnolia to bloom (any day now) to take a picture, but the foliage looked so incredible in the morning light that I couldn't resist a snapshot.

DFS Thu, May 7th, 2009, 11:15 AM My Dad has always been pretty satisfied with the tools from Sears...can't say I know of anyone who's ever had to deal with them on the level you describe John. Sucks when appliances don't work properly. I have a refrigerator in my condo that's easily 30+ years old...it's harvest gold if you know what I mean. I have redone the entire place and this fridge sticks out like a sore thumb. But I can't bring myself to replace it because it runs like a champ, you can't kill the thing! Nowadays I hear with all the computer crap they stick in new fridges they break often. I've considered just painting it black, I've known people who have had great success painting their fridges.
From my personal experience/research, LG makes some of the nicest appliances out there today.
Sorry Sears is dicking you over John.
John Stone Thu, May 7th, 2009, 12:03 PM Sorry Sears is dicking you over John.

i still hate them :curses:
John Stone Thu, May 7th, 2009, 12:12 PM I thought I'd bore you guys with a few more garden pictures.
First of all, my lawn was completely brown after this past winter. I'm amazed at how well it came back this spring. I've always had a pretty good looking lawn (it's sort of a big thing with me :o), but it's never looked better than it does right now. Why does this excite me so much? I DON'T KNOW! I guess I'm getting old.
30945
The magnolia bloomed! This is the first of around 12-15 flowers that are about to open. :spaz:
30946
Here is an iris that is blooming.
30947
The dwarf mexican petunias are blooming like crazy now. I love these flowers!

malnar Thu, May 7th, 2009, 04:39 PM I completely concur that Sears sucks. They lost my business a few years ago through amazing ineptitude. It got to the point where any order I placed with them said my card was declined. ANY CARD. The system would accept the order, then I'd get an email 5 mins later saying my card was declined. They could never explain it and I finally gave up trying to buy from them.
My only exception are craftsman tools & garage organization, which require me to walk in, pay cash and leave with it. If I can't do that, I don't buy it. If all my other stuff wasn't craftsman, I'd give that up.
What funny is their screw ups cost them money on several transactions. In one example, they over-credited me for a purchase they couldn't deliver. I tried to get them to rectify it, but after having a store manager spend an hour working on it to tell me it was right, I gave up. :bang:
When I heard they bought Kmart, I realized they had finally come up with the maximum amount of retail SUCK possible.
So, enjoy your rant, it is justified

Well, I'd really love to go and play, but I was half-joking when I made that comment in this morning's update. I don't have a large enough bankroll to buy my way into the WSOP main event, but I am trying to satellite my way in. It's going to be very, very tough, but who knows - maybe I'll get lucky and pull a Moneymaker. :D

My compliments on the lawn and plants they look great. I'm assuming that you have Floratam? What are you using as far as fertilizer? Weed control? Seems everything I read about Floratam, weed killer and Florida doesn't mix.
John Stone Mon, May 11th, 2009, 11:55 AM I'm assuming that you have Floratam? What are you using as far as fertilizer? Weed control? Seems everything I read about Floratam, weed killer and Florida doesn't mix.
I actually pay a commercial company to fertilize my lawn because they have access to far better stuff than is available to consumers. Also, with so many potential problems (especially in the summer months when disease and bugs can be thorny issues), it's a nice insurance policy. I do supplement what they do with my own applications of Ironite.
I use a locally owned Florida company called Evergreen. I really like them. At my old house I used a couple of National companies (like Scotts and TruGreen), and they were HORRIBLE.
Yes, I have a Floratam lawn and it definitely does not like Atrazine once the temperatures start climbing into the 80s. Atrazine can, however, be used on Floratam in the cooler months, and it is an excellent (albeit controversial) pre-emergent weed controller. That's what the company I pay uses on my lawn once the cooler weather sets in, and it does the trick. Weeds just can't compete with a thick, healthy turf so they are not a problem in my lawn (the gardens are another story--I have to weed those every few days!)

This is probably not the day to suggest this since this is the day you ran out of fresh salad greens, but if you're buying fresh salad regularly you should consider fresh broccoli too. I tried all the frozen broccoli's out there, and they do fine. I keep a bag or two in the freezer for emergencies, but fresh broccoli is so much better imo. I buy like 4 or 5 heads at a time (one head is one serving for me) and just store in the fridge. I cut and steam the broccoli over water for about 8-10 mins, and prepare with drizzled extra virgin olive oil and garlic salt. The frozen is convenient, I see the appeal, but if you're buying fresh salad regularly anyway the transition should be easy. I think you'd be happy with the difference. :tu:

I cut and steam the broccoli over water for about 8-10 mins, and prepare with drizzled extra virgin olive oil and garlic salt. The frozen is convenient, I see the appeal, but if you're buying fresh salad regularly anyway the transition should be easy. I think you'd be happy with the difference. :tu:
I've found that it's actually cheaper and a lot less work to even buy the big bags of florets from Sam's than the individual heads. Somebody has done the work of chopping them up, and it's cheaper. Double win!
I still keep some frozen, too, but I go through a 2 lb (I think) fresh bag a week.
...and I still hate broccoli

I have gotten a 4lb bag of frozen florets at BJ's wholesale, and they are very very good indeed. But I still think fresh is best!
vanDutton Tue, May 12th, 2009, 11:15 AM I just wish my food looked that good when it came out of the oven. I can't cook for crap, but I'm learning. I may steal the recipes so I'm not on the verge of gagging with every bite.

There's really no comparison, I couldn't agree more.
It's funny you should mention the broccoli, because I originally wrote a paragraph in this morning's update mentioning how much better fresh broccoli is compared to frozen, and that I should probably make the effort to start using it more. The Chinese place where I get my General Tso's Chicken cheat meal always uses fresh broccoli, and it's so good!
I'm really sick of frozen. It's just not that good. :(
OK, this weekend I'm going to tell Lisa to get me fresh.

Cooking tip: Don't under steam it. I under steamed the broccoli for my wife and I last night and it was still a bit 'hard'. I had twice as much broccoli as usual so I guess it needed more time. She was mad at me. :o I'm not sure if you can over steam though, kinda like over baking a potato?
Jedi Wed, May 13th, 2009, 05:25 AM thanks John, I really enjoyed your visual, gourmet tour ;)
leftyx Wed, May 13th, 2009, 06:58 AM Nice tour John. It was mouthwatering. And I'm surprised how much preparation you put in. But still, it's not very complicated, and I think I could follow some of the recipes for my meals. I may try one sometime soon.

I also get the chopped florets from Sams- DIRT cheap when compared to buying the heads at the grocery store. You get 2 lbs of broccoli for about $4.
I'm not sure if you can over steam though, kinda like over baking a potato?
You can. I do not recommend it. It turns into a steaming pile of green mush. It's WAY worse than understeaming it. Trust me. I usually steam my broccoli for 5-7 minutes, no more, no less.
CA$ON Wed, May 13th, 2009, 09:51 AM When I cook my broccoli I use the Ziplock steam bags.
Buy fresh from your produce, wash off and stick in the steam bag. 3 minutes later its steamed PERFECT. :tu:
Sea2Sea Wed, May 13th, 2009, 10:01 AM Cason is right, my wife brought home these Zip and Steam Bags http://www.ziploc.com/ from the dollar store. I was skeptical at first, But all you do is put the Broccli or any other fresh or frozen veggi in , no water or anything. Follow the recomended Micro wave time printed right on the bag and Whala ! Perfectly steamed goodness. :tucool:
adamh707 Wed, May 13th, 2009, 08:01 PM You know... All this talk of frozen broccoli, I remember i had a few bags in the freezer that i hadn't tried... A little preface though; Veggies are relatively cheap here, so all i eat is fresh.
My rating out of 10 for frozen Broccoli with 10 being fresh- 3/10.... I actually tipped that defrosted gunk down the sink and got the fresh stuff out of the fridge..... hmmmmmm tasty!
nc Tue, May 26th, 2009, 08:39 AM Hi John,
I've been reading the page for years and I always love following your progress. It's fascinating to me how your powerful work ethic has shown incredible results and I've watched you make seemingly superhuman gains to your physicality while maintaining the same mental issues that plague me and the rest of the world.
I wonder if you might want to look into augmenting your training with either meditation or cognitive based therapy. Both of these techniques are powerful and proven to make massive psychological changes when used effectively. I'd recommend looking up Jon Kabat Zinn from UMass Medical School for some information on meditation and David Burns from Stanford on the CBT. Both of these techniques have shown people who are terminally ill or in chronic pain (for example) how to gain control of their emotional lives and bring joy into their days, and neither requires any crazy equipment or doctor visits or anything like that. I haven't seen too many people (anyone, really) combine this approach with physical fitness and frankly given your drive and determination I think the results if you pursed this stuff would be the kind of thing that would make front page news and be a huge wake-up call to doctors and people world wide. Anyway, I just thought I'd throw that out there.
Peace.

Hey, thanks for the suggestion!
While I have no doubt that those techniques are effective for many people, that kind of stuff just doesn't appeal to me on any level.
I truly believe that all I need to do in order to deal with the stress I'm feeling is a healthy diet, insane workouts and no alcohol. :tucool:
How long are they going to leave you wondering about your job? It's been a while since this first popped up...are they just torturing you with it?
The situation is very complicated, and the uncertainty is not intentional. It may be months before I know anything, so I'm just going to have to deal with it.
John, have you ever thought about starting a business?
Been there, done that. I ran a computer consulting business about 10 years ago. Of course JSF LLC is also technically a business. All I can say is that if I lose my job all options are open. I don't think I could ever go back to reporting to an office every day. I would be miserable. :(
Does this mean your pics will be back to?
There will definitely be pictures, but you have no idea how much I've grown to hate the monthly photos. I'm not saying I'll never take another one, but putting a stop to those is one of the few changes I made over the past couple months that I actually feel good about.

Ian B. Mon, June 1st, 2009, 03:48 PM John, have you ever considered dieting using a more macronutrient-based protocol - in other words, setting daily goals for fat, carbs and protein and pretty much eating whatever you want assuming you can hit your macronutrient needs?
It allows a lot more variety in your diet without jeopardizing its effectiveness. Rather than going out and eating a 2000+ calorie free meal you could probably find a way to get a small amount of "junk" into your diet without venturing off your numbers.

I thrive when I'm being 100% strict. Any junk at all has proven time and time again to be a nightmare for me. I'm going to have to work on that, but now's not the time for me to continue experimenting.
jdb-44 Tue, June 2nd, 2009, 08:41 AM John,
Loved your updated today...the part hitting your pecs "so hard that my legs will feel like they got off light" made me laugh.
Your attitude is a continuing inspiration to me. Even though I'm not in a workout mode right now, I'm still taking your statements about momentum to heart, and I'm sure they'll be an inspiration once I jump back in the saddle.
Enjoy your well-earned time off!
Akira-Kai Tue, June 2nd, 2009, 12:08 PM You're such an "all or nothing" type of guy. You either do a "thing" or you don't do a "thing". I suspect you always have been. I know you always will be! It's one of the main reasons for your success and it's why you'll continue to be successful for the entirety of your life.
It's almost irrelevant what happens to you in the short term because your mindset will ensure your continued success. No matter what the world throws at you today, you'll always find a solution for tomorrow.
So you've clearly made the right choice in re-establishing your 100% commitment to your 2009 cut. It's the only way forward for people like us. And in these uncertain times, as you said, you NEED to have this one element that you can exert some control over.
All the best!

jdb-44 Fri, June 12th, 2009, 08:48 AM Funny, about your old computer's specs--they match mine. All I really do is browse the net, check e-mail, and play SF2 on MAME (!), so I can't justify getting anything new. So I (and, I imagine, many others here) will have to live vicariously through your new PC experience.
Do you plan on doing any before/after benchmarking, just so you can bask in the screaming speed of your new PC? Also--what do you use your PC for? Spreadsheets? Video? Gaming?
And speaking of fun things--have you given any more thought to the High Speed pinball machine you were looking into last year?

I used to do benchmarking and stuff when I was heavy into gaming on my computer (that was a long time ago), but that doesn't interest me anymore. So, no, I'm not going to do any benchmarking. My only concern is getting a fast, reliable system that doesn't bog me down when I'm trying to work.
My Xbox 360 is for games, and I love it. :)

I'm definitely going to work on that, too. I consider breaking out of the "all or nothing" mindset just another challenge and another obstacle to overcome.
So yeah, like you, I continue to have a strong desire to lead a more balanced lifestyle, but I discovered that this just wasn't the right time to experiment. I was really struggling with moderation while trying to reach my goal of 8% body fat. Once I hit my goal I'm going to give it another shot. :tucool:
Good luck to you, and feel free to pass on any tips you pick up along the way. :)
J2K66 Mon, June 15th, 2009, 01:20 PM I think that waiting until after your cut to try and find that "balance" is a GREAT idea. When you're cutting, you're cutting... and looking for noticeable results. After your cut, you can go into maintenance and expect small ups and downs that will help create that balance.
Good luck!
GuitarNWeights Mon, June 15th, 2009, 01:55 PM Nice update John. I know what you mean about the cravings. I was at Tim Hortons this morning to have my coffee before doing my cardio, and all I could smell was bacon - it smelt so good but I struggled my way through and did my fasted cardio haha

cwbolton Mon, June 15th, 2009, 04:01 PM John, during your last bulk you had your 'supplemental' traps workout, was this to trigger some new growth in your traps as you felt tney were a lagging body part, and would it be any good doing say a 'supplemental' forearm workout if you have a certain focus on a bulk such as traps or forearms which cannot really be integrated into a spit but are lagging and would like them to grow more?
Cheers :tucool:

I have had the same issue with movies. However, it can be done! It's just a matter of habit. Try going to the movies and totally ignoring the popcorn, just enjoying the movie. Any time after that first time, it's considerably easier. You'll be like, oh yeah, it *is* physically possible to sit through a movie and enjoy it without stuffing my face.

The way I cook them in olive oil Pam turns them sort of golden, plus I put cumin in there so that might add to the yellow color.

Also the whole cutting and bulking thing. Do what you want ...its you that your trying to make happy.
To me working out and eating right is like my Zen. I am at peace and it's my time. I run around with my head cut off all the time and sometimes it kills me to not get things done or perfect. So when I step into the gym and give it 110% and do everything perfect I feel like I did good and I'm peace with myself. (Just a thought)
John Stone Fri, July 24th, 2009, 02:59 PM John, with your frustrations with your cut and all the other "life" things going on for you right now, have you considered not cutting or bulking for awhile? Now might be the time to maintain for a few months. Still lift hard, still eat well the majority of time, maybe some cardio if you want, but don't go all out either direction calorically. Maybe tweak things a little toward one direction or another, but nothing overly stressful on body or mind?
All options are on the table. :) Maintaining has a certain level of appeal, but so do the other choices. Right now I'm just trying to figure out what it is that's going to make me happiest.
Something really serious is going on at work, and I won't find out more details until Monday afternoon (I just got words of an emergency meeting). This news could very well alter my entire life considerably, so I think I'm going to postpone my decision until Tuesday.

Reno_1ted Tue, July 28th, 2009, 08:35 AM Sorry to hear your news John, but you will be ok.
I think your decision to "maintain" is 100% correct. I tried to continue a cut once at a very stressful time in my life (my mother was in Hospital with cancer and eventually passed away). At that time, it seemed like what I needed to do, to stay on course etc, but the reality was that the extra stress and things going on meant that a caloric deficit was not what I needed. Knowing what I know now, I wouldnt have just gone OTT and completly off the rails, but I would have done what you plan to do.
However, I put maintain in inverted commas because I believe you will be surprised with how you do with just eating clean and healthy with the odd cheat, and lifting hard!
There seems to be millions of Florida based computer guys on your site, I wouldnt be surprised if you pick up some work from here !
If you ever need to run a "donation" campain to take some strain off with the sites, you just let me know and I will help rally people round.

Nowhereman Mon, August 3rd, 2009, 11:53 PM Cholula is pretty good. It's what I use to make spicy chicken sandwiches or spicy oven fries. Mostly because it has less sodium than other brands.
Our Albertson's has a Pico de Gallo that is . It's the only pre-packaged salsa we buy. They probably only sell it regionaly though. If mom can't make my the salsa then we'll buy the Pico de Gallo.
They also have one that is called Hazardous Coals, it's made in New Mexico, that is pretty decent. I usually don't buy the other stuff since it's basically ketchup.

I think you're being too harsh. Visit www.johnstonefitness.com and imagine you have no previous knowledge of the site, its author or anything like that.
Just under the most recent news article is the text "For the September 2009 TSM I've selected forum member Flex (Stephen).". Directly underneath that box are John's photos, and I can definitely see that - to the uninformed reader - it might appear that the photos relate to the aforementioned "Stephen".
Yes, the author of the Sun article has been a little lazy in not checking his facts, but I think it's very harsh to call him a "tool box".

While the situation you describe is certainly acceptable for a casual spectator passerby, it's absolutely tool box'ish for a "professional".

MannishBoy Tue, September 29th, 2009, 10:38 PM John, another thing that adds that extra Asian taste to stir fry is fish sauce. I swap out some of my soy sauce with fish sauce (so in your recipe, maybe use .5-1 tbs of fish sauce with the rest being soy).
Also, I'm pretty particular with my soy sauce. My go to soy is Tamari sauce. Much richer flavor.

Anyway, I mentioned to my mom that the oil splatter was a pain to clean up, and she suggested that next time I cook the stir fry outside on my grill side burner. I never use the side burner, so that idea hadn't even occurred to me. I think it's a great idea, and that will also prevent the fish sauce from smelling up the house.
I don't even know if I will like the fish sauce, but I figure it's worth trying.

fishtanker Wed, September 30th, 2009, 09:03 AM Hey John, you and Lisa should definitely check ebay or craigslist for bikes. You can get a really nice 1 or 2 year old bike for half the price of any retail store. I got one of mine off ebay and saved ~400 bones.

Great suggestions.
One thing that makes craigslist and ebay a little tougher is finding bikes that are the correct size for you. So you could find several bikes that are good deals but the frame size is too small or big. The upside to buying new is if you go to a bike shop they will take your measurements a fit you up right :tu:
That is really dependent on the type of bike you are getting though. If it's a road bike or mtn bike it's a good idea to get the correct frame size. I think stuff like beach cruisers are kind of a one size fits all sorta deal.

OH_Broker Thu, October 1st, 2009, 10:32 AM John,
You said in your daily update a day or two ago that you cooked a lot of your food at once and store for easy preparation when meal time comes around. Quick question: how do you keep your rice from becoming hard or tough? When I cook rice in advance and refrigerate and reheat later, it becomes hard and/or tough and the texture seems to change. Have you had this problem?

Quick question: how do you keep your rice from becoming hard or tough? When I cook rice in advance and refrigerate and reheat later, it becomes hard and/or tough and the texture seems to change. What I'm doing now is dividing the brown rice into 1/2 cup servings, putting each serving into a baggie, putting those baggies into a large freezer baggie and then freezing the cooked rice. This has worked out great because I can make a lot of rice at once.
As for reheating, all I do is empty the rice into a bowl, add a small amount of water and nuke for about 1 minute (with a quick stir after around 40 seconds). The rice comes out very well using that method!
I used the same procedure back when I refrigerated the rice, but the reheat in the microwave only took about 30 seconds.

The bikes have been a blast so far, Aram! Lisa and I had a nice ride yesterday afternoon. It's going to make cardio a lot more enjoyable, that's for sure. I got my heart rate up there pretty good a few times yesterday. I expect when I'm ready to hit the trails it will be far more intense.

If you have anything like the picture below around where you live, it's a very good workout. I know your bike isn't a BMX bike, but when you are riding for fun and exercise, it doesn't need to be.
The tracks around here have open ride nights (some even once a week), where anyone can come out and just ride for fun, regardless of membership, what type of bike you have, etc...

Paradise Lost Wed, October 21st, 2009, 11:05 PM I've been lurking around here since around your first real bulk in fall '04, and recently started thinking that it was kind of odd that you never did the whole, "general fitness" thing... now that you are, not only can I look forward to realizing how particularly undedicated I can be even at something I really enjoy (cycling), but also read about what will most likely be some crazy, "I had this John Stone urge to kickass" bikeride. :) All sarcasm aside, when you consider that you're obviously in great physical shape, you will see just how much fun doing something like this can be and how hooked you'll get with it... also, you'll probably have the side benefit that biking down the street won't knock the wind out of you for the first few weeks.

DFS Wed, October 28th, 2009, 08:30 AM John, you made that comment about trying to avoid shooting a would-be mugger in your update today and it reminded me of this email my brother sent me over the weekend.
AN ACTUAL CRAIG'S LIST PERSONALS AD
To the 20th Guy Who Tried to Mug Me in Downtown Savannah night before last:
Date: 2009-05-27, 1:43 a.m. E.S.T.
I was the guy wearing the black Burberry jacket that you demanded that I hand over, shortly after you pulled the knife on me and my girlfriend, threatening our lives. You also asked for my girlfriend's purse and earrings. I can only hope that you somehow come across this rather important message.
First, I'd like to apologize for your embarrassment; I didn't expect you to actually crap in your pants when I drew my pistol after you took my jacket. The evening was not that cold, and I was wearing the jacket for a reason. My girlfriend had just bought me that Kimber Model 1911 .45 ACP pistol for my birthday, and we had picked up a shoulder holster for it that very evening. Obviously you agree that it is a very intimidating weapon when pointed at your head ... isn't it?!
I know it probably wasn't fun walking back to wherever you'd come from with that brown sludge in your pants. I'm sure it was even worse walking bare-footed since I made you leave your shoes, cell phone, and wallet with me. [That prevented you from calling or running to your buddies to come help mug us again].
After I called your mother or "Momma" as you had her listed in your cell, I explained the entire episode of what you'd done. Then I went and filled up my gas tank as well as those of four other people in the gas station, -- on your credit card. The guy with the big motor home took150 gallons and was extremely grateful!
I gave your shoes to a homeless guy outside Vinnie Van Go Go's, along with all the cash in your wallet. [That made his day!]
I then threw your wallet into the big pink "pimp mobile" that was parked at the curb ... after I broke the windshield and side window and keyed the entire driver's side of the car.
Later, I called a bunch of phone sex numbers from your cell phone. Ma Bell just now shut down the line, although I only used the phone for a little over a day now, so what 's going on with that? Earlier, I managed to get in two threatening phone calls to the DA's office and one to the FBI, while mentioning President Obama as my possible target.
The FBI guy seemed really intense and we had a nice long chat (I guess while he traced your number etc.).
In a way, perhaps I should apologize for not killing you ... but I feel this type of retribution is a far more appropriate punishment for your threatened crime. I wish you well as you try to sort through some of these rather immediate pressing issues, and can only hope that you have the opportunity to reflect upon, and perhaps reconsider, the career path you've chosen to pursue in life. Remember, next time you might not be so lucky.Have a good day!
Thoughtfully yours,
Alex

John Stone Wed, October 28th, 2009, 08:44 AM John, you made that comment about shooting a would be mugger in your update today and it reminded me of this email my brother sent me over the weekend.
Just to clarify so no one misunderstands: in this morning's update I made a comment about doing everything my my power to avoid a would-be mugger. I've never had to pull my gun, and I hope that I never do.
fishtanker Thu, October 29th, 2009, 08:55 AM Nice update today John. When the cycling bugs hits it hits hard! :)
So whats the next biking related purchase going to be? I recommend clipless pedals and shoes....its a night and day difference in terms of pedaling effeciency. :tu:
Keep spinning!
Reno_1ted Thu, October 29th, 2009, 09:03 AM I have really been enjoying your updates recently, during this time of maintaining and trying out new stuff, the bodyshop stuff, cycling, workouts etc. Its really cool to hear about it all. :)

Probably... clipless pedals and shoes! :D
Money is pretty tight right now, so I'm trying to stick to the basic essentials. When things ease up the clipless setup is near the top of my list.
I have really been enjoying your updates recently, during this time of maintaining and trying out new stuff, the bodyshop stuff, cycling, workouts etc. Its really cool to hear about it all. :)That's great to hear, Reno! Even though there's been a fair amount of stress in my life lately, that stress has resulted in some positive changes in my life. :)

justin6case Fri, October 30th, 2009, 12:14 PM If I check back here in a year, am I going to read about John Stone running a marathon?
I was actually thinking the same thing. What do you think John?
John Stone Fri, October 30th, 2009, 01:27 PM I was actually thinking the same thing. What do you think John?
Nope. I have an old knee injury that prevents me from doing any serious running. I don't even like running.
cnjlakes Fri, October 30th, 2009, 04:24 PM Excellent choice of bikes, John! I bought my first Trek (Madone 5.2) this year. I was a little nervous at first, having ridden a custom built frame for the past ten years, but the Madone is more comfortable than the custom frame, that required me sending in about 15 body measurements! Trek makes great products and has a very good warranty.
I am a huge Cateye fan as well, having used one since about 1994. When I bought my Trek, I switched from a wired Astrale to a V2c wireless (2.4 ghz transmission!). I kind of wish I had gotten something with an altimeter, but oh well.
Anyway, glad to see you are approaching cycling like you approach everything else... all out! Also very happy to see that you and Lisa included skid lids with your purchase! We have a name for helmetless cyclists... P.O.D's.... Potential Organ Donors.
Now you just need a sticker for the Mercedes that says 'My other car is a Trek'

I'm so proud of Lisa for completing this morning's bike ride! It was our longest ride to date: 20.41 total miles, 13.0 MPH average speed, 31.6 MPH top speed. The average speed would have been higher, but I stopped to take a few photographs. Here are the photos and a video:
These are the trees along the paved bike trail just outside of our subdivision.
32871
A little further down the first leg of our local bike trail.
32872
The trail goes off into the country a bit. Here are a half-dozen or so cows relaxing under the trees.
32873
I call this the "Blair Witch" house. It's even creepier at dusk. I'm going to go in it. :scared:
32874
Lisa and I discovered a trail that runs between a very dense wood and a water treatment plant. We have to be careful here because there are so many squirrels!

John Stone Wed, November 4th, 2009, 07:12 PM Lisa and I did a 28-mile bike ride today on the West Orange Trail in Orlando. Here are some pictures and a video. We had so much fun!
The entire West Orange trail is 22 miles long, but ~8 miles run through some pretty bad neighborhoods and commercial areas. We decided to start at the Apopka-Vineland outpost (mile marker 14) and ride to Killarney Station (mile marker 0). For those of you who failed math, the round trip totals 28 miles.
Here's Lisa just before we set off.
32911
Here I am at the Apopka-Vineland outpost just before setting off.
32912
The two miles between the Apopka-Vineland outpost and the Ingram outpost are beautiful!
32913
There are some very well-maintained orange groves along the trail.
32914
Lisa flying along!
32915
About 9 miles into our journey and arriving in the historic section of Winter Garden. Awesome!
32916
Lisa in beautiful historic Winter Garden. This is such a neat little town!
32917
There's a nature preserve about halfway between the Oakland outpost and the Turnpike bridge. We didn't have any way to secure our bikes and check the preserve out, but we will plan on doing that soon. It looks really cool.
32918
This is the start of the nature trail at the preserve.
32919
Lisa crossing the restored railroad bridge that crosses over the Florida Turnpike. This is a little less than a mile from the end of the trail (well, technically the start of the trail, but we came from the other way).
32920
At the halfway point in our 28-mile trek. The Cateye bike computer is amazingly accurate! We started 1/10th of a mile past mile marker 14, and here we are at mile marker 0.
32921
Commemorative plaque at Killarney Station.
32922
Heading back. The trail is so nice!
32923
The Live Oaks along the trail are ancient and majestic.

A very old Live Oak by a placid lake.

John Stone Sat, November 7th, 2009, 07:30 PM Lisa and I spent the day at the awesome Seminole-Wekiva trail. This is a 14-mile trail (one way), but we did the first 3 mile section (there and back) twice along with a complete round-trip of the entire trail for a grand total of 34.4 miles! We only stopped long enough to take a few pictures and video. It was a great ride!
I am going to post the pictures now, but the video is going to have to wait until tomorrow. It needs editing, and I'm really tired! I have some stories to tell, too. We actually got semi-lost in the forest at the halfway point. I'll also post a trail map tomorrow.
Here are the pictures....
Here we are about to leave on our journey from the San Sebastian Prado trailhead.
32960
The trail was awesome! Everything from scenic wilderness to commercial business centers and busy streets lie along the route. Here is Lisa early in our ride.
32961

32965
Cows!!!
32966
This little calf watched me the entire time I was taking pictures and video. I wanted to pet her, but she didn't come close enough.
32967
There are some incredible lakes along the way. The eye-candy is pretty awesome.
32968
Horses! A guy we met had some apples, and he gave some to Lisa so she could feed one of the horses. They seemed to love all the attention that the riders gave them.
32969
I love this shot. :)
32970
We were pretty deep into the ride here.
32971
More awesome scenery.
32972
I saved my favorite nature picture for last. :dreamy:

Seminole-Wekiva trail route. The paved trail is 13.1 miles long (one way). We did the round-trip, plus we did a couple miles off-road (and got lost, see next satellite image). We also did the first 3 miles twice, for a total trip of 34.5 miles.
32974
So we were were at the end of the paved trail, and looking for the Wekiva river here. There were no signs, we just knew that there was a mile-long dirt trail that was supposed to get us there. We found an unlocked gate with a semi-trail beyond, and thought that was it. We did not find the river--not even close--and we got turned around. Lisa was very upset during all of this. We eventually found our way to the road, but it was blocked by a padlocked fence, razor wire and a "NO TRESPASSING" sign. Oops. We managed to get our bikes and ourselves over the fence, and then we walked about a half-mile along a busy road (with no shoulder) back to the trailhead. Of course we still had a 14 mile bike ride back to our car ahead of us, too. I have some video of us lost, and the aftermath, which I'm working on now. Hopefully Lisa will let me post it. She was not happy.

This past vacation was probably one of the most relaxing and fun that I've had in a long, long time.
Now I can't wait to get out on the dirt trails. :)
John Stone Sun, November 15th, 2009, 05:05 PM Lisa is out of town, so today I went out to the Seminole-Wekiva trail by myself. It was an awesome ride! I did 29 miles. My average speed to the last trailhead (halfway point) was 15.0 MPH. My average speed for the entire trip was 13.7 MPH, and that included a couple miles of off-road riding.
I told Lisa I wouldn't go looking for the river by myself, but I met a couple of women at the last trailhead and they told me how to get there. Turns out there is a hidden trail that runs along Markham road, and that trail runs into another trail that goes to the river (where those two trails meet is where I took the below picture).
Yeah, I decided to go. Sorry, Lisa! :o
33024
So here I am at the river. Unfortunately the last 100 feet or so are down a steep embankment, and it's totally overgrown. I didn't feel like getting bit by a snake all alone in the middle of nowhere, so I didn't attempt to make my way down to the river's edge (there didn't look as if there was any sort of clearing there, anyway).
33025
This is the view into the thick forest to the south of the river trail...
33026
Here's the route I took to the river from the Markham Station trailhead. Unless I'm far more tired than I thought I was, there appears to be a large flaccid penis on the map to the south of the trail.

Bluestreak Sun, November 15th, 2009, 07:37 PM Pretty cool to go exploring off-road! I'm used to my off-roading adventures being gas-powered on my ATV, so being on a moutain bike under my own power was new territory for me. I wish I'd have known you were going out there... I'd have driven to that side of town to ride with ya.
I went out to the Snow Hill trail along the Little Big Econ today. Absolutely perfect weather for it. This was the first time I attempted something non-paved. I'm kind of upset at many of the moutain biking websites, they seem to want you to pay to get access to trail maps, so I went out there with somewhat limited knowledge. I did get a little lost, but it's not hard to find your way (or more importantly... find your way back!). It's an easy trail to follow, well maintained... it could certainly use more directional signage (which there wasn't a whole lot of). It's a bit sandy in spots, especially near the well-worn trail head... I'd say the worst part about it is there are quite a few blind curves following the river, so you have to watch for riders coming at you in the opposite direction. This trail can be ridden pretty fast by more experienced riders, and sometimes they're advancing towards you at a serious clip and you don't know it until they're almost on top of you because of the twists and turns. Not good for someone like me... who's just getting back into riding, and riding off road for the first time since I don't remember when.
I had fun. :tucool: No pics, though... it is a pretty scenic ride. My only camera is a dSLR... not exactly practical for carrying on the trail, not to mention if I take a spill, I don't want to sacrifice such an expensive piece of equipment. Probably not very challenging for a more advanced rider, but I'm sure my hips/legs will feel it tomorrow morning.

Here's a fairly crude map of Snowhill (http://www.outdoortravels.com/files/fl_maps_littlebigecon_trailmap.gif).

It's a bit of a drive, but Santos is supposed to be awesome. A bit closer to home, someone at the bike shop told me that the off-road action on the Seminole Trail system around Big Tree is pretty good.

Bluestreak Tue, November 17th, 2009, 01:52 PM Hey Rog, I knew you were an avid ATV rider, but I didn't know you were into biking!
I never really was into bikes. I bought a 1998 Raleigh M60 in Feb. 98 (Tanisha has a '98 Trek 800 Sport), put a few hundred miles on mine, got my first post-collegiate job, and basically never made time to ride it again. It's sat in our spare room for ten-plus years, collecting dust.
Until a couple months ago. When you started talking about getting a bike, I got inspired to de-mothball mine. An hour of wiping it down and a few adjustments later, it's good as new. I put a Cateye Enduro 8 (http://www.cateye.com/en/product_detail/254) on it and I've used it to go back and forth to the gym, mostly. 4.3 miles, one way (same hole-in-the-wall gym 1Fast/Becky use). It's a good warm up/cool down, and saves me from having to start either of my gas hogs for the short drive.
And I've been riding for 30 minutes late afternoon just around the neighborhoods to get in some cardio. After coming across the sandy spots in Snow Hill, it reminded me I'm a long way from having the cardiovascular depth I once possessed. :o

Are you talking about singletrack.com? They do charge for the topo maps, but the interactive maps and the shared routes are free (but not available for all trails, unfortunately).
I was in a hurry to find a map and get out there Sunday and didn't really do enough searching.
This is something I've heard about Snowhill, and it's kept me from checking it out.
It's really not that bad... just something to beware. I was feeling adventurous, and really shouldn't have gone alone considering that trail's kind of in the middle of nowhere. I wasn't sure if T would have been too thrilled to go off-road (and she doesn't have a helmet yet, either) so when I had the chance, I strapped the bike to the Mustang and just went out there.
Snow Hill is close to UCF, one of the only off-road trails on this side of town, and it was a beautifully sunny Sunday, so there were quite a few bikes on the trail. I was being cautious as this was my first foray into off-roading under pedal-power. First time since I brought the bike home 11 years ago that the tires saw dirt.
It's a bit of a drive, but Santos is supposed to be awesome. A bit closer to home, someone at the bike shop told me that the off-road action on the Seminole Trail system around Big Tree is pretty good.
Santos interests me big time, but I want to make some more trips to Snow Hill and get my confidence up. Seminole Trail sounds promising, we ought to try and hit it on a weekend. I mentioned Santos to T, but that's 90 miles away. I'd like to make a camping trip out of that one so we can spend a couple of days exploring. From what I read, the place is so huge you can spend a weekend there and never really have to hit the same trails twice.
We have to go riding sometime. I'll bet Malnar and his wife Candy would like to go, too. Maybe some other local JSF'ers as well.
I'm game. Even got a bike rack that fits on the Mustang, so if T's working, I can still do as I please.
Rog, check out http://www.everytrail.com. Here's Snowhill (http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=15991), for example.

I don't think my Blackberry Flip has GPS, but I have a GPS I keep with my ATV at my buddy's place in St. Cloud. It's a nice, compact handheld Magellan and I've mapped dozens of ATV trails with it. I really need to go pick it up.
Say the word and we'll pull a ride together. :tucool:

Cool, Santos would be a fun place for a lot of us JSF'ers to meet up, hang out, do some riding and administer first aid on one another. We'll have to get something planned.
I think the first time Lisa and I go to Santos, however, we'll be doing it solo; she's pretty nervous about her first off-road experience, and I think she'd feel more comfortable with at least one trip under her belt before we all meet up.

It's great how pets get to know our routines...

Did you shoot that with the helmet cam? I'd be interested in seeing some of your day-to-day activities, shot from John Stone perspective.
For example, a bench press video fom the helmet cam would be cool!

Nah, that was shot with my camera.
I don't normally walk around or do my workouts with a bicycle helmet on! :p
I did accidentally catch an R-rated shot at a trailhead urinal while on today's bike ride. :o
Chadster Sun, November 29th, 2009, 08:00 PM John,
aside from the R-rated stuff () did you enjoy your ride? It got to about 60 degrees here today and my wife and I enjoyed a walk. We took pictures of a couple beautiful mallard ducks swimming in the pond.
My bike won't arrive until Tuesday or Wednesday. The weather has been good but will probably turn cold and snowy very soon. Us northerners will have to live vicariously through you until next spring.

The ride was incredible. We had so much fun. I wrote more about the ride along with some pictures in today's update (http://www.johnstonefitness.com/news/nov_2009_news_archive.php#11302009) (video still to come).

This is the time of year that all the extra hot weather and hurricanes are worth it. I don't envy people who have to deal with snow and ice. I don't know how you guys do it!
Chadster Mon, November 30th, 2009, 11:38 PM Oh, on the way back we saw a large Box Turtle eating alongside the trail. I stopped to take a picture when I noticed that there were perhaps a dozen large holes spaced out along the embankment. They were Turtle homes! I peered into a few of the holes and saw Turtles in each one. I thought it was pretty cool.
"Noodling" is what the guys around here call that type of turtle hunting. The turtles (at least the ones up here :p) crawl face-first into the hole and you reach in and grab the tail. If you google it you will find some amusing pictures of people catching catfish by hand.
John Stone Wed, December 2nd, 2009, 08:03 AM I've got two ~10 minute videos of the 38 mile bike ride from this past weekend. These are both in HD.
Part I is the journey from the Prado trailhead on the Seminole-Wekiva trail to Big Tree State Park. There are a couple of scenery shots, but most of it is Lisa and I talking and joking around. People make fun of my helmet cam, Lisa almost runs into me... the usual stuff:

Part II is what happened after we got to Big Tree. There are some shots of the massive Big Tree and also the unfortunate incident on the dirt trail I found: :o

I hope you enjoy the videos and have a few laughs at my expense. :)

LOL - Yes... when are you next going off road trail finding? :D
I still think that the guy who fell off could have stayed on the bike. Also if you wouldn't have slowed him down maybe he wouldn't have made that corner. Good work. :tu:
k3vb0 Wed, December 2nd, 2009, 12:57 PM Excellent videos, and thanks for editing out your penis. :) Even though you might have caused that guy to fall over on the trail, you were awesome in going back and checking on him. You would not believe how many people would just keep riding. BTW, not sure what the rules of the road are out there, but in Colorado when you pass people on the trail, whether they are on foot or on a bike, you yell "on your left." That gives them a chance to get over and usually keeps you from startling walkers as you pass. It's much better than ringing a bell as people naturally move to the right to get out of your way. It's also amazing how many walkers don't know you're coming up behind them on a dirt trail since bikes tend to be pretty quiet. Awesome scenery out there, and it's great to see you've caught the biking bug. :tu:
Reno_1ted Wed, December 2nd, 2009, 12:58 PM The lack of wind noise is amazing on those videos!
Also, kinda showed me a side to Florida that I wouldnt have imagined. Not a Disney character in sight. ;) Seriously, looks really beautiful round there.
Chadster Wed, December 2nd, 2009, 07:36 PM You guys have some NICE trails down there. And seriously don't worry about people laughing at that camera because it takes great footage and its really enjoyable to watch. When you were stopped at the tree and walking around it felt like I was playing a video game
Seriously though - keep the videos coming - I/we really enjoy them!
