View Full Version : Grip giving out on 'pulling' motions.
akm3 Tue, June 8th, 2004, 07:25 PM I have been having difficulties maintaining my grip on the bar for things such as lat pulldowns, seated rows, etc. Actually, it weakens on push motions too, such as incline presses and barbell curls, but it isn't as big of an issue.
How do I increase the strength of my grip to match my other muscles? (I can't challenge my 'other muscles' because my grip fatigues)

jk0 Tue, June 8th, 2004, 08:17 PM What you can do is buy these grip cruncher things, they are basicly just little things you hold in your hand and squeaze. They are generally spring loaded. I would imagine you can find them at just about any kind of store, including Wal-Mart, for probably under $10-20USD/pair.
naturalofcourse Wed, June 9th, 2004, 08:18 AM I have this same problem when I'm working with heavier weights. It really urcks me! My motto has always been "buy right, buy once". I agree with getting yourself a grip developer, but if you're gonna drop the cash, get the best. The Captains of Crush line up will challenge you for life.
They are true strength training equipment that will far surpass anything you'll ever find in any local stores.

Do yourself a big favor though, if you get a set of these, don't even think about starting out any higher than the Trainer. As your grip develops, there's plenty of time and options to move up too later on.
Like the #4's at 365lbs of spring strength.

Does anyone know a normal household object that can be used in the same way as a gripper ?
and if not, how often and how many reps should you do of them ?
JeremyLikness Wed, June 9th, 2004, 11:46 AM I would try reversing your grip on some lifts. For example, throw in some reverse curls, reverse press-downs, etc. Avoid lifting straps with dead-lifts, pull-ups, etc, and let the wrists "catch up" for overall development. You can also incorporate some wrist-specific exercises like forearm flexions and extensions. Ian King has a great arm program that really focuses on the forearms in addition to the upper arm - just Google "Great Guns in 12 Weeks" and you'll find it (it's in 4 parts).

I understand the "avoid lifting straps" comment but when my grip is totally burned and I still want to work my back, I use straps. I try to use them only for the last, heaviest lifting. This way I feel I am still working my grip but I also can get a good back workout in.

A tennis ball works well until your grip gets strong enough to squish it. Just hold it in your hand and squeeze.
jk0 Wed, June 9th, 2004, 03:29 PM I would just go get a pair of grip crunchers and use them whenever your sitting around not using your hands. Should see results fairly quickly.

weird, I tried that and the first hit when clicked shows as
http://www.t-mag.com/html/body_107guns.html
but somehow it changes to
http://www.t-nation.comhtml/body_107guns.html
which of course doesn't work. I tried the first url in three different browsers and it transmogrified in all of em.
