at night, when I finish up putting things into fit day, and I'm short on cals, but my ratio is pretty good... should I go ahead and just eat for cals (clean) or eat a smaller amount of cals, but with good ratio? i.e.
If I've had all my fat for the day, but I'm 150-200 cals shy, should I have peant butter, or something with less cals (and no fat)?

Well, I've stopped the calorie/ratio counting, but if I don't feel I've eaten enough on a certain day, I'll eat something extra. Ratios are nice, but if every once in a while you need to make up calories, just eat something clean for the number of calories you want. You could go without it, I just personally would rather go higher than lower.

Depends on what you're looking to do. If you're going for fat loss, I'd say err on the side of fewer calories.

I am cutting and that is what I do. My general rules are to eat 2300 cal,1g protein per lb of body weight, 20% fat, rest carbs. The ratios aren't always exact, but usually pretty close. One you do it for a while it becomes pretty natural.

I would say shoot for a +- 200 calories per day and +-1.5% in each ratio. As long as your in that range, you'll be fine. Truthfuly I dont even think +-300 cal per day will hurt.

I wouldn't bwat myself up over ratios if I were you. They're just meant as a general guideline, and very few people can follow them exzactly to a T.

and +-1.5% in each ratio.

I doubt the ratios are that important. If I'm within 5-6% of the ratios, I consider it correct.

Well, you could always plan what you'll eat ahead of time to match your calorie/ratio goals. A little planning would completely dissolve this question, since you could have both: no trade off required. No "short on cals" unless it's on purpose (and planned out).

Worth thinking about...

+/- 1.5%...if I could hit that everyday it would be awesome...usually I'd say i'm in the +/- 5%, but 1.5..man thats tough!

If I'm short on calories, then I'll eat whatever is handy and clean. My main goal each day is to get the necessary protein. If I'm able to do that, then due to my food choices, the carbs and fats balance themselves out.
