What does everyone think about the keto diet? I am planning on going on it Monday, but want some other opinions beforehand. I really gotta do something quick, the only problem is in my diet. Thanks.

I was doing a balanced diet of carbs, protein, and fats and lost about 8lbs and stayed there for 3 weeks, so i tried the keto and it helped me break the plateau of 217lb.....i am down to 214lb during the first week. I am really doing the cyclical keto diet(ckd) which is where you go for 2 weeks in ketosis then have a carb up. After your first two weeks you have a carb up every weekend. I am still in ketosis for this weekend since last week was my first, but get to have a carb up next weekend.

It works. But it can be a bit painful.

Thanks for the input, I think I am going to start it on Monday after I go grocery shopping tomorrow.

RM Amderson - When you say paingful, do you mean literlay or because you can't have any carbs? Sorry, but that's probably a stupid question. Again, thanks alot guys.

I did it for a rather long time. It worked. But sometimes I wanīt feeling very good. You can get a bit depressed after a while. I was eating plenty of things that helps the body burn fat faster too(mostley caffeine, but lots of it. Much more than what is healthy). At the end I had some problems with liver and kidneys and was feeling like I was half dead. But I lost 5.5 Ibs(2.5 Kg)/week for 3 months. Mostley fat. Still got a good lean muscle weigth even if I lost a bit of it.

Now Iīm doing a more healthy diet 40/40/20 and eating 1800-1900 calories/day. Im still loosing fat. But slower. After 2 weeks with this diet I feel much better. My body is starting to work normaly again and Iīm no longer depressed like I sometimes was when I did the other thing.

Seems like I was lucky that I didnīt get really sick from it. Of course I probably made a lot of mistakes. I guess itīs possible to do a keto diet in a much healthier way than I did.

Advanced warning - this will be moderately graphic and unpleasant.

Over the holidays, I decided to give in and try a keto diet. I figured that it would be easier to eat nothing but fat and protein at parties, dinners, etc. than to try and maintain a constant, healthy diet, so I decided I'd try it for a month and see what happened.

Results?

I lost weight - two pounds in a month, to be exact. Not really the sort of loss I was expecting. According to what I've read, this means I'm "metabolically resistant" to ketosis.

I felt tired, something I haven't felt in many, many months. Working out became a serious drag and I found myself skipping workouts for no good reason (other than feeling run down).

I became terrified of my own bathroom. Folks warned me that "mild constipation" sometimes comes with a keto diet, so I pounded the flax seed oil and tossed back FiberCon throughout the day to add non-digestable fiber to my diet. Within a week of starting, trying to go about the regular business of... um... business was physically painful. When I got to the point where I was sweating, had tears in my eyes and there was blood in my stool, I decided it was time to cut the keto for good.

That being said, I have friends that have tried stuff like Atkins and have gotten great results. Obviously, it works for many, many people. Personally, I gave it a shot and it was a nightmare that I never intend to go back to under any circumstances.

If you're going to do a keto diet like a CKD or TKD then you need to read The Ketogenic Diet by Lyle McDonald. Its the most complete book on keto diets and weight training. the website is listed below and the book can be ordered there or at Amazon.

It was almost exactly 1 year ago that I gave the Atkins way a try. My friend was doing it and getting good results so I gave it shot. The first week I dropped 11 lbs and the an additional 6 over the next three weeks. It was torture for me. I was feeling fine for the first 2 weeks (induction) but then my energy was zapped. I couldn't think. It was like I was in a 24 hr fog. I'd forget who I was talking to on the phone. Forgetting meetings. And as Funtax mentioned above, bowel movements were a pain. On top of all that, I still felt guilty eating all that low carb stuff/hi pro/hi fat that I wouldn't eat much more than 1200 cal/day. As for my friend, he's still doing it one year later and is skinnier than ever with no problems.

The only safe way to put your body in a state of Ketosis is to do a water fast. During the first couple of days of a water fast, your body goes into starvation mode. That is, due to the lack of fat, protein, and especially carbs coming in, you're body resorts to breaking down fats, protein, and glycogen stores (lean muscle) for fuel . The brain can't use glycogen as fuel and your body can't afford to lose muscle mass so it triggers the liver to start producing Ketones usually by the end of the second day. At this point, you go into a protein or muscle sparing mode because you're body and brain's main source of fuel is now the ketones produced by the liver. This is the safe way because by creating ketones your body preserves lean muscle mass. If done otherwise, ie. Atkin's diet or anything else, the body uses the fats and proteins and sugars that are ingested along with glycogen stores as fuel and never starts producing ketones. This means that you are constantly keeping your body in a state of starvation and losing lean muscle mass and energy at a very rapid pace, hence the rapid weight loss. Not only that, but cholestorol levels start going through the roof. I did a 7 day supervised water fast for purification reasons and ended up losing 17 lbs. I was analyzed before and afterwards and found that of my 17 lbs. lost only 3% was muscle and 5% was water. That means I lost 15.64 lbs of pure fat without any adverse effects.

I'm sorry to sound rude, but PLEASE dont post this GARBAGE!!!

This is a bunch of propaganda that has no scientific reality.

Being in ketosis is not unhealthy, and does NOT require you to fast yourself. There are numerous scientific studies that show a low carb diet is NOT unhealthy and actually LOWERS cholesterol because of the lowered blood insulin level and increase in glucagon. In fact, in the absence of increased insulin, it is impossible for your body to deposit cholesterol. Additionally, a ketogenic diet is INHERENTLY muscle sparing.

As for my own personal experience, I guess all the fat I've lost and muscle I've gained doing low carb and being in and out of ketosis is just my imagination? I guess its also my imagination that I lose weight much more easily when restricting carbs and eating lots of healthy fats and proteins? Oh wait, my cholesterol must be through the roof right? No, its gone down tremendously. Wait, I must have lost muscle though right? No,my strength has gone up 50% in all lifts in the last 6months and I have more muscle mass now than when I was in high school football(I'm 31 now)

I dont think a keto diet works for everyone, but for someone like me(and about half of America for that matter) controlling insulin via carb control is simply the best way to lose weight, build muscle, and control cravings.

Thank you and good night

Big Bump Vortex :tu:

I've been on CKD since September and have lost 40lbs of bf and probably gained 15-20 lbs LBM (I have no accurate "before" numbers). I think most people who fail keto are those who can't get through the first two weeks ("induction" phase). They'd be surprised how easy it is once you get past the initial pain.

Atkins is essentially for sedentary people, and I do think that they probably do lose some LBM along the way. This is why CKD is a better option for those who wish to go down enjoy the fat loss benefits of low-carb dieting, but who also perform weight training or are very active.

As mention previously Lyle's book is the bible,, but if you want more info you might want to check out C-K-D.com (http://C-K-D.com)
