View Full Version : Cardio/Weights Schedule - Should one come before the other?
Sholezard Thu, June 3rd, 2004, 09:43 AM I work out 5x a week on the following schedule (in the morning):
Cardio (elliptical or treadmill) on an empty stomach - 35 min
Weights (upper and lower body on alternating days) - 20 min
My goal is fat loss as well as toning. Is this an ok workout schedule?
I know diet also plays a role but I'm wondering if the workout routine is effective.
Thx.
TeMpTeD Thu, June 3rd, 2004, 10:36 AM Your weight should always come before cardio. You need the majority of your energy to go into lifting heavy, which is priority, and then whatever is left in the tank so to speak goes on cardio. I was told that your weights workout should not exceed 45mins if you are going to be doing cardio afterwards.
I've been doing 30 mins cardio after my weights for about a month or so now, and seem to be doing ok with that.
Skoorb Thu, June 3rd, 2004, 10:45 AM Whenever I do both together I put weights before cardio, always. I've never in my life gone to "failure" with cardio and I hope I never have to, but since it's a regular occurance with weights, you want as much energy as possible. If you're tired from cardio your weight workout will suffer, but if you're a bit tired from weights to do cardio just grit your teeth.
Strapped Thu, June 3rd, 2004, 10:49 AM Don't any of you lose your pump when you do cardio directly afterwards? I HAAAAAAATE doing cardio afterwards.
Bluestreak Thu, June 3rd, 2004, 10:52 AM Another vote for weights before cardio here. Time restraints are causing me to do weights and cardio in the same workout session for a while, so I'll be doing a 30-minute lifting routine followed by 20~30 minutes of cardio. We'll see where it gets me in a month or so.
TeMpTeD Thu, June 3rd, 2004, 11:00 AM Yes, I have found that I tend to lose the majority of my pump. But I go to the gym to get the job done by getting stronger and losing fat, having a pump is merely a bonus, it doesn't mean a lot to me.
Strapped Thu, June 3rd, 2004, 03:37 PM I wasn't trying to downplay you at all, nor do I appreciate the sarcastic incinuation. I just do what works better for me and what I like/don't like. I have a method I've been using and the results have worked.. That's all.
TeMpTeD Fri, June 4th, 2004, 11:47 AM I apologise, it was not intended as a sarcastic comment, it was not meant to be taken like that. Each to their own I guess, whatever works is different for everyone - fair play.
