I have found that lawnmowing ("body-powered" mower) is a bit more intense than walking, but not as much as jogging, which works well for losing fat without burning muscle. I'd love to mow lawns for fat loss (sounds like a slogan :) ).

Maybe I'll offer to mow lawns in the neighborhood or just find a large spot of grass (maybe a football field) and look like a lunatic while mowing away 3 times a week for 40 minutes :p

Hey, this mowing thing is not a bad idea! People could get exercise while mowing public areas like parks. Public spending could be reduced, both in not having to mow the lawns with paid labor and the increased overall health level of the population :)

and then people who want to lean out their arms could come in and rake

seriously, my wife and I have the type of mower with the power assist. I never use it anymore - just push that gall darn thing around the yard and smile as I start to sweat. it's a great feeling.

in fact, isn't yard work great for your health? it's better than sitting and watching TV or playing on the computer, that's for sure. it gets you outside under the sun. you accomplish something with results you can see in the end. you burn calories. it's not like a treadmill where it's only you - many people can help you out.

and afterwards, a bbq with grilled chicken and veggies while playing catch in the grass you mowed hours earlier :)
