View Full Version : Body Shop vs. Fitday

John mentioned that input from FitDay users about what we like/don't like prefer etc. might be useful. Let's start a thread.

I realize this is probably impossible, as it would require translation from programs and FitDay isn't likely interested in losing business, but I have over a hundred custom foods in FitDay. It would be awesome to copy them. </dreaming>

Pros (BodyShop over Fitday):
repeat a day feature
assemble foods into meals feature
component of a whole (having everything in one place, as opposed to just nutrition. FitDay's workout section is weak.)

The repeat a day and meals features are huge improvements. I like the favorite foods list.

Cons (FitDay over BodyShop):
search results
page layout
recent foods

When I search "egg" in FitDay, "egg, whole, raw" is the eleventh return. When I search "egg" in BodyShop, "egg, white, raw, fresh" was I think the 37th response.

As to the page layout, the nutrition totals seem huge to me. The page looks a little unbalanced.

FitDay does a "recent food" tab where you can pull up the past few days and add in any of the foods you ate on those days. FitDay remembers the quantity; if I ate .25 cup 2% milk yesterday and select that from my recent foods lists, FitDay will add .25 cup 2% milk to my foods eaten today.

I'll add more as they occur to me. :)

Good stuff, this is what we want. :tucool:

I like the 'quick add' from Fitday that allows you to take the defaults for a food item (or your last used amount) and directly add it to your day.

While this thread will be useful to get ideas flowing and some discussion going, please be sure to make "formal" feature requests for anything you'd like to see on BodyShop. There's no way we can efficiently track suggestions made outside of that system. :)

Reduced fat milk.

The food items in the database come straight from the USDA. If you click on the short description it will bring up the long description and the macros.

You could totally drink whole milk if you wanted to.

If you can't find a specific food item in the USDA database, you'll need to add it as a custom food. I was able to find 2% milk in the existing database, however.

ah. perfect. thanks.

another question......

so when i try to post the image of the macro split breakdown for the day (using either copy or the img insert thing)....

it works in here but then show's up like this....

http://bodyshop.johnstonefitness.com//function/piechart.php?data=53*243*149&label=Fat*Carbohydrate*Protein&rid=777

when i hit submit.

is that cuz bodyshop is member only or is that something that will ever be able to work???

i've also tried copy/pasting the nutrition numbers....

which works in here.... but when i hit submit the formatting looks like this....

CALORIESFAT (12%)CARBS (55%)PROTEIN (33%)2028.4253.58g243.93g149.61g

basically what i'm REALLY looking for is a way to enter my nutrition breakdown into my journal without having to do a screen capture, save and attach a file, or type it out myself.

maybe it's not doable. just curious.

anyone have another way to do it with bs that works???

No, it's not a permissions issue. The image is not working as an embed because that particular image is generated dynamically. If you look at the above URL you can see that you are actually linking to a php page, not an image.

One easy way you could post the macro image in your journal would be to simply right click on the image in bodyshop, and then save it to your hard drive. Then you can attach it to your forum post like any other image. Would that work ok?

i'm sure it would work fine..... but that's what i'm trying to avoid doing. that was the way i did it my first year or so from fitday..... but it was a royal pain in the ass.

it's all good. i'll just copy/paste the numbers and format/space them out myself.

thanks tho! :tucool:

EDIT: This code has been revised, please see my post a little further down.

OK, I created a custom BB code so BodyShop macro pie charts can now be inserted into JSF Forum posts. The format is simple: just past the data in the image url after the question mark into a PIE tag.

For example:

data=21*59*103&label=Fat*Carbohydrate*Protein

Will result in:

data=21*59*103&label=Fat*Carbohydrate*Protein

--> I'll see if I can get Matt to add a simple Copy & Paste code under the image on BodyShop to make it even easier. :)

Cool, so I've even added the ability to display calories for the day alongside the macro breakdown; John I imagine will create a custom tag for this; example, this is John's breakdown for today:

http://bodyshop.johnstonefitness.com/dailynutritionext.php?user=John%20Stone&date=2010-02-03

If you paste it into a browser you will see it; It is also DYNAMIC meaning as you change your food, this will dynamically change where it is.

OK, I've modified the PIE tag to incorporate these changes. The PIE tag is now even easier to use. This is the syntax:

YYYY-MM-DD

For example, if I want to post my nutrition chart from Febraury 3, 2010, this is how I would do it:

2010-02-03

The above code would result in this being displayed on the forum:
2010-02-03

As Matt indicated, this image is dynamic, so as you update your food logs it will change automatically.

Any questions? :)

Easy copy and paste code (both for the JSF Forums and regular web pages) has been added to the tab that shows the daily nutritional pie chart. :)

Fitday also has also more sub catagories for there foods. Getting 37 pages of results for fruits is not realistic to browse through. While browsing bein able to search would benice also instead of having to switch back

so what's up with alcohol???

i see it can add beer.... but it doesn't count alcohol as a macro???

if i add 20 shots to my daily total..... i still get the other three macros adding up to 100%...... which doesn't make sense in terms of total calories.

Well, alcohol essentially according to the USDA is a non-food item; but like you said, Beer does contain a good number of carbs and some protein according to the database. Alcohol itself has zero calories regardless of the effects it has on your metabolism so it's not counted as a macro.

coolio. thanks!

one more question..... last night i was entering a food item and suddenly my whole day of food was erased. everything just wiped out to zero. i dont think i hit anything odd like the erase day or whatever...... so i'm not sure what that's about. is that considered a bug?? or can that only happen as user error??? does a confirm delete box pop up when you delete something/a day??

Did you remember to save the day before navigating away? The system will throw a warning if you try to leave a food log with changes before saving it.

I've been using the food logs extensively for almost a month now and have not ever seen it erase foods as a result of a bug.

Is there a way to save a meal as a recipe or single item?

For instance this morning I entered seven items that together made my omelette. Is it possible to have an option to "save this meal as [enter custom name]?" Then you would have those items singularly as a unit, and be able to both add more items to the meal and access the food/recipe in the future without adding each ingredient individually.

If this doesn't exist I'll request it; I'm just wondering if I'm missing it.

About the only way to do using the system that is in place now would be to create a custom food item, and then list the individual food items in the detailed description. This way requires manual calculation of each macro. Obviously not very efficient.

Being able to enter several foods items and then save the entire meal (or part of a meal using check boxes) as a single custom food item is a great idea. Please suggest it! I would use this feature a lot; for example, my Chicken ranch salad. :)

Deja, I want to make sure we're on the same page. Alcohol and other ingredients in alcoholic beverages are all included in the total calories/macros (as far as I know). Are you saying that's not the case? Can you give me some examples?

This would be awesome. It would also be great to save the "meal" with all of the ingredient quantities as defaults, but allow you to change up the quantity as a one-off.

Ex. I save a "meal" called "Protein Shake", it contains:
1 scoop Nitrean
1 medium Banana
1/2 cup Oats
1tbs Peanut Butter

I add this for the day, and these defaults populate... but I only had a large banana, so I want to change the "meal" this one time to use a large banana instead of a medium one.

I'm not sure where to make a suggestion on top of a suggestion... same protocol as a feature request?

well i put in a couple food items and then added 10 shots of vodka.

my total calories were correct (included alcohol calories) but the macros showed carbs/protein/fat adding up to 100%. which wouldn't be the case since 80% of the calories from that day were from alcohol.
