View Full Version : why are eggs bad?
Jbroad572 Thu, May 20th, 2004, 02:26 PM I like my breakfast that consists of 3 eggs 6 slices of Turkey Bacon and 2 slices of WW bread. I, however eat the whole egg scrambled, not just the egg white. I have seen some people scramble one whole egg and then the egg whites of the other eggs. What is the reason for this? Just want to see if it is necessary for me to change it up.

So eggbeaters has very little fat in it and it is only made from egg whiltes. Can I conclude from this that the fat in eggs is all pretty much in the yolk? I am worried more about the total fat/saturated fat grams rather than the cholesterol.

Not true -- The yolk contains about 60% more protein then the egg white but one must count in the fact that in an egg there is about 50% more white in weight then yolk...
Therefore the protein content in the egg white and the egg yolk of one egg is about the same.
BUT
the typical egg yolk at 19g contains 68 kCal ( 6.3g fat and 3g protein ) and the White at 31g contains 14 kCal ( 0g fat and 3.1g protein )
Some nutrient experts sweat that throwing away the yolks is insane and does no good - vs - most bodybuilders say that eating the yolks is bad ...
I eat 5 egg whites every morning and get 16g of Protein at the cost of 69 kCal. Now to get the same ammount of protein eating whole eggs id have to eat roughly 2.1 eggs at the cost of 182 kCal ( an added 13g of fat ). For me thats 42% of the fat I can eat in a day and thous the numbers speak for themselves quite clearly. I can spend that fat on eating some better tasting meat instead...
So the yolks are out ...
But the yolks do contain vital minerals ( iron etc ) and Vitamins E and D and B2 wich there is none or very little of in the whites. This is as far as I see the only positive thing with the yolk if we are talking strictly nutrition values.
Id throw any Spaghetti Carbonara in the bin without the yolk thou :)

im not sure where you got this information from but im a little confused by it. from what i know the yolk is roughly one third the size of the entire egg yet contains half the protein. heres the article i had read this in a while back. i have seen it in other places too but i knew where this was. scroll to where it says yolk in bold. http://www.aeb.org/facts/facts.html this is the american egg board so you could make an arguement that my source is biased.

What is important is that we agree that the yolk contains half of the eggs protein in an typicall egg. And therefore the white contains the other half.
Maybe I missunderstood you but I thought u said that most of the protein in the egg is located in the yolk. This is what I disagreed with.
The yolk is higher in protein content then the white but there is also more of the white in an typicall egg.
For me my numbers speak for themselves and its not something ive come up with on my own hehe :) ... U can find the numbers of the Cal content of white and yolk etc in various places. I myself use a Swedish program that calculates many a foods content in all vital minerals and vitamins and different types of fat etc . This program is used by Swedens Athleete university and its database is taken from scientific studies of the ammount of different nutrients in different foods.
It is just simply put a program with a database of Cal contents of foods, which u can find in many places.
In past ages :P ppl have thought egg yolks to be very bad for you - these days they say it is not so. And I believe them - but even good fat is high in Cal content and in the end of the day its a +- game.
Ill save the 13g of fat by throwing away 2 yolks and eating 3 more whites. And then I can spend that fat on buying some meat more fat rich then oh say chiken breasts. And then im happy... dont even need to eat the darn beans for protein :)

taffer Thu, May 20th, 2004, 05:47 PM looking at nutritionaldata.com, egg only have 2grams of sat-fat out of 5grams, so most of the fat is unsaturated, and remember you still do need sat-fat in your diet, so 2grams will be very easy to fit in!

i wouldnt go over 2-yolks personally, i'd say max 3
HunkOLove Thu, May 20th, 2004, 09:10 PM I sometimes do 1 whole egg and then 2-3 whites. with it. Tastes like regular scambled eggs. I just don't like he eggbeaters. Just plan it in your diet spreadsheet like anything else.
Dakhor Fri, May 21st, 2004, 05:15 AM From a "is it healthy for you" point of view go ahead and eat the eggs. But bear in mind that they contain as much fat as bacon. Even good fat is fattening in the end.
So with each yolk u ad 68 kCal of wich the fat in the yolk is 56 kCal and thous eating for instance 2 eggs in the morning at 56x2 = 112 .. you now have 112 kCal of unneccessary fat in your body unless ur perhaps are a vegetarian or if u aint into loosing fat in the first place. But then ud not be writing here now would you...
