View Full Version : Cancun bound in Feb 2010
fishtanker Mon, September 28th, 2009, 12:42 PM Lets see how long until this journal meets its certain death from lack of updates. ;)
So my wife booked us a surprise trip (not a surprise to her obviously :p) to Cancun this coming Feb and i'm looking foward to it. However it means i'll have to re-evaluate my lifting goals. Orginally i had planned to bulk though the new year and then maintain a few months and then cut for the summer like i usually do. That isn't going to work this year. I'll need to cut starting the 1st of the new year so that i'm at a comfortable BF level for the trip.
Right now i'm trying to figure out what to do. Ive been in bulk mode for the past 2 weeks and enjoying the strengths and mass gains and i really don't want to change up a good thing. I have a feeling that if i bulk to the end of the year and then immediately cut i won't maintain the gained muscle as well as if i mainted with it for a few months. Not sure if thats true or not since i've never tested the theory.
So for the time being i'm just going to keep doing what i'm doing and hopefully have a solution by the end of the week or so. I'm up for suggestions as well. :tu:
fishtanker Mon, September 28th, 2009, 12:49 PM Current stats:
34yo male
Lifting consistenly for 3.5 years
221# 6'4. Tall, dark, handso.....oh wait, thinking out loud again. :o;)
~15% BF
Current main lifts:
BSQ 335# 3RM
DL 385# 5RM
Row 265# 5RM
I also do that bench pressing crap but who cares. :p
fishtanker Mon, September 28th, 2009, 05:48 PM 9/28/09
FSQ 215# 1x10, 245# 2x5, 255# 3x3
Step ups 15" 195# 4x5,5,4,4
Good mornings 245# 3x8
I really need to get a cage for squats. My arm dipped on one of the FSQ sets and I had to dump it. I had thought I bent my bar beyond repair but a good whack on the cement made it as good as new. I wonder if that works on people ;)
I also need to take it easy on the weekend beer fests. It's starting to hurt my recovery. Blashphemy!!
fishtanker Tue, September 29th, 2009, 06:30 PM 09/29/09
BB bench 195# 1x10, 215# 5x6,6,6,5,5
Single arm long bar row (plates only) 100# 1x10, 130# 5x5,5,3,4,4
BB military 125# 1x10, 145# 1x7, 155# 3x3
Bent arm pullovers 125# 3x6,5,5
I wish my pressing was as good as my pulling. My freakishly long arms do me no favors in that department....OK enough bitching. I hear it lowers T levels ;)
fishtanker Fri, October 2nd, 2009, 08:41 AM Did some intervals on my treadmill yesterday, ~20mins worth. I think i'm going to throw a day or 2 of that in per week.
I decided that i'm going to bulk up to ~230# which should take until about Thanksgiving time. Then i'll maintain that through the New Year and give me 6weeks to cut before my trip. I don't think i'll need to cut anymore than 10-12# which it completely doable, for me, in 6 weeks time. I'm at 222# as of today.
My lifting goals for that timeframe are:
450# DL
300# FSQ
200# OHP
The dead lift number i think is very reachable however the squat and press might be tough to hit. We shall see!
fishtanker Sat, October 3rd, 2009, 07:24 AM 10/2/09
FSQ: 215# 5x10,10,10,6,6
DL: 355# 8x5
Not sure what was up but i just wasn't feeling it this workout. My lower back and hams/glutes were very stiff and i had a hard time making them fire on either lift. Maybe the intervals the day before affected me more than i thought or it just could have been a bad day. :blank:
fishtanker Sun, October 4th, 2009, 10:45 AM 10/4/09
BB bent row: 215# 2x12
Single arm corner press (plates only): 100# 2x12
DB front raise: 35# 3x8
BW pullup/dip SS: 11/19, 7/10, 6/7
I don't usually lift on weekends or in the morning but i decided to shock the system a bit with higher rep work on an empty stomach. Was going good until the last 2 sets of PU/Dips....fizzled out real quick. Moving 220+ pounds on those get tough after a while :p
Beer and BBQ this afternoon. YEAH BUDDY!!
dejavued Sun, October 4th, 2009, 12:43 PM Beer and BBQ this afternoon. YEAH BUDDY!!
nice....have fun!!
good luck on the above goals too. :tucool:
200# ohp.... strict or pushpress on this goal?
fishtanker Sun, October 4th, 2009, 03:39 PM 200# ohp.... strict or pushpress on this goal?
I'd like it to be strict but i'm not sure its gonna happen. RIght now my 1RM is probably 170# so adding that high a percentage of weight in such a short time is going to be hard. Espically while trying to increase the DL and FSQ. Go big or go home....Deja style. :p :D
fishtanker Tue, October 6th, 2009, 08:43 AM Weighed in at 226# today ..thats a little faster of a gain than i'm comfortable with. I need to cut back on the cookies a bit . Its funny though because in the mirror my BF% looks to be the same and i can still see my abs. Some of the extra weight is probably left of water rentention from Sunday's BBQ drink fest.
Doing lower body tonight. Can't wait to put this extra weight to good use!! :spaz:
fishtanker Tue, October 6th, 2009, 06:18 PM 10/6/09
FSQ: 215# 1x10, 235# 1x5, 265# 3x3, 235# 2x5
Step ups# 195# 3x5
GM's 245# 3x10
Killed it today. My highest on the FSQ was 250x2 so today was a major PR. Finally hit 3x5 on the step ups...i've been fucking around with that weight for 3 weeks now . I tightened up my form on the GM's by lowering the bar further down my traps and focusing on powering up though the glutes/hams. I was able to add reps on each set of those. All in all it was a good session. :)
fishtanker Thu, October 8th, 2009, 08:37 AM 10/7/09:
BB Bench: 195# 1x10, 225# 8x4,4,3,3,3,3,2,2
Single arm long bar row (plates only): 100# 1x10, 135# 5x5,5,3,4,4
BB military: 125# 1x10, 145# 1x6, 155# 2x2,0, 145# 1x5, 125# 1x8
Bent arm pullover: 130# 4x4,3,3,3
Okay workout i guess. My benching is crap and going heavy really fatigued my shoulders so much so that i regressed on the military press, which kinda sucks :blank:. Increased weight on rows and pullovers. I can't praise pullovers enough...my whole upper body feels those after i'm done. No lifting today but tommorrow i have heavy back squats on the menu...i might go for 350#
dejavued Thu, October 8th, 2009, 10:18 PM I need to cut back on the cookies a bit .

fishtanker Fri, October 9th, 2009, 08:52 AM Good luck with that!
No shit. 335# 3x3 is my highest and that was 2 weeks ago. Needless to say i'm very anxious/nervous for today's session. Like John said "if you're not nervous before a leg day then you're not working hard enough."
fishtanker Sat, October 10th, 2009, 08:48 AM 10/09/09
BSQ: 265# 1x12, 305# 1x8, 335# 1x5, 355# 5x3, 305# 2x8, 265# 1x20
355# :D
Killed it again and got a PR! I really like doing heavy back squats every other week cause i'm fully recovered and can really focus on them. They felt great yesterday and my legs/glutes are killing me right now. I may have to take the fatass beagle for a walk just to get the blood flowing in them....he won't be happy about that :p
Time for coffee and food.

:claphigh: nice!
fishtanker Tue, October 13th, 2009, 11:53 AM Been sick since Sunday :(
Hopefully will be back to %100 by tommorrow. Want to salvage the week with at least 2 good workouts.
fishtanker Thu, October 15th, 2009, 08:37 AM 10/14/09:
BB bent row: worked up to 275# 5x4
Deads: 385# 4x4,4,4,3
Single arm long bar row: see below
BW pullups: 9,7,6
Mixed emotions on this workout. Started off great with the rows but as soon as i started my DL warmups i knew it was going to be bad. My grip just wasn't there yesterday. I had so many more reps left in me but for the life of me i just couldn't hold onto the bar. After the DL's i was planning on repping out on SLBR's but due to my failing grip i wasn't even able to hit the reps i ususally hit let alone rep out. It was very frustrating. I've noticed my grip issue's more over the past months since i'm using more weight than i ever had but i figured it would catch up eventually....guess not :blank:. I really don't want to have to resort to straps or hooks but if i can't sort this out thats how its going to have to be.
Anyone have any ideas on how to improve grip?
Tonight i'm doing chest and shoulders. I decided on doing a bodypart split this week instead of my regular upper/lower since i only have 3 days available due to my recent sickness. I know grip won't be an issue with the panzy weighs i'm pushing! :p
BW is at 225# today.

Nice workout! :tucool:
Some gyms have olympic bars that weigh 50 lbs. as opposed to the conventional 45 pounders. These 50 pound bars are thicker. Do some static holds with them in the squat rack until your grip gives out. Also, if your gym allows it you can use chalk if you wish not to use straps.
What gym do you train at? I use to live up that way. I usually come up in that area once a week or so. Tomorrow I hope to get a workout in at Best Fitness in Schenectady.
The majority of my training was at Healthplex and Golds Gym, both located in Clifton Park. I lived in Twin Lakes for many years before moving back down to the city this past May.

Thats interesting. Currently i'm using a 35# bar which now i'm thinking is whats causing some of the problems. Since the bar is the same length as a standard 45# bar then it must be thinner. Maybe the bar is too thin which is causing grip issues. I need a new bar anyway. :)

I actually lift at home but am familiar with all of those gyms. I used to live in Loundon Square apts which is right down the road from Twin Lakes. Small world.

BB bench: 215# 4x6
BB military: 145# 1x6, 165# 3x2, 125# 1x12
Single arm corner press (plates only): 115# 3x5
DB front raise/BW dip superset: 35# 1x10/BW 1x17, 35# 1x10/BW 1x12
Good workout. Pleased with the progress on military and corner press. I opened my stance on the military press and felt stronger with the lift. I'll be satisified with a 180# press by the end of the year. I think thats more realistic than 200#...its amazing how adding a meesly 10# to the bar makes that lift so much harder.
Legs tonight! Lets see if i can keep this momentum going and get a new PR with the FSQ. Going for 275# and if i'm feeling overly masochistic i may rep out with BW on the bar for BSQ's. :spaz:
fishtanker Fri, October 16th, 2009, 04:53 PM 10/16/09
FSQ: 215# 1x10, 245# 1x5, 275# 3x3, 245# 2x5
Step ups 15": 205# 4x3
GM's: 245# 3x8
BSQ: 225# 1x35
Just about crawled out of the gym after this. I'm nipping at the heels of a 300# FSQ! Increased weight on the steps and GM's so i'm happy with that. The 35rep BW BSQ was f'ing brutal....I've dispatched a hitman out to get Zen for that bright idea. :p
Now i need food....
fishtanker Tue, October 20th, 2009, 06:03 PM 10/20/09
BSQ: 285# 1x8, 335# 8x5
SLDL: 315# 3x8
Nothing really noteworthy today. I haven't done SLDLs in over 2 months so I started slighty lower than those numbers. Definitely going to bump that up next time. I feel these more in the hams than good mornings.
fishtanker Thu, October 22nd, 2009, 10:43 AM I'm pumped for tonights workout! Due to scheduling issues i wasn't able to lift last night so i had to use it as my off day. The unscheduled rest day really fires me up to lift. Can't wait to get in there and move heavy shit around. :D

I don't include the weight of the bar on this one since i'm really not lifting the whole thing.
fishtanker Mon, October 26th, 2009, 06:05 PM 10/26/09:
FSQ: 215# 1x10, 255# 1x5, 285# 3x3, 255# 1x5
15" Step ups: 205# 3x5
SLDL: 335# 3x8
Going for the 300# FSQ next time that ex comes up in rotation. :spaz:
Almost went for it tonight but i wanted to move up in weight on the SLDL's and step ups so i had to hit all the reps on those...which i did.
BW is still at 227# with my BF ~%15. I always seem to stall at this weight since i've never weighed more than 230# in my life. If i want to grow more i'm really going to have to focus on eating a lot. Its way harder to gain weight than lose it, IME.
Time to eat!

Bent arm pullovers: 125# 5x6,5,4,3,3
BW pullups: 7,6,5
Great workout. Starting to hit some decent numbers on the row...i just wish my bench would catch up :blank:. I threw the pullups in at the end just so i could completely fry my back...definitely feeling it now. :D
Legs tomorrow!

Horrible session today. I can only chalk it up to not working chest/shoulders for over 7days due to timing. I sorta switched from upper/lower to more of a split a week or so ago and everything got shuffled around.
I scraped today's workout early so i could do it again later in the week. Ironically i changed to split to focus more on chest....:lol:
fishtanker Wed, November 4th, 2009, 09:40 AM Working the back tonight! :spaz: Hopefully i can redeem myself after Monday's abysmal chest workout.
On a related note i've been thinking of joining a gym. Right now all i have in my home gym is a squat rack (no safeties), bench, dip/chin station, dumbells up to 75#, barbell, plates up to 385#, and an EZbar. I've been using this same equipment for over 3 years now so needless to say i'm running out of ideas to mix my lifts up. What i'm missing most is a squat cage so i can do box squats, heavy dumbells for chest, and a dip belt. TO purchase al of this i would have to shell out at least $300-$500. A gym which is literally less than 1 mile from my house is $10/month with $40 down. IMO, thats really cheap and i'm seriously considering joining. It has all the stuff i need cages, dumbells, hammer strength machines, you can deadlift and grunt! I'm going to check it out after work one of these days to see how crowded it gets. Since i've never had to wait for equipment one of the biggest drawbacks is going to a crowded gym and having to wait.
Anyone have experiences at commerical gyms and how crowded they get ~4-5pm which i'm assuming is the busiest time?

Good workout, nothing special. Doing either shoulders or chest today, legs Friday (going for the 300# FSQ!), and then either chest or shoulders on Saturday. My chest needs mahor work, its starting to look imbalanced with my back. I need to dedicate at least 1 day per week to chest. My plan is bench press, CGBP, dips, and i need to think of another exercise to round it out. Anyone have an idea with the equipment i listed in my last post?

That sounds like a great gym. 4-5 is usually crowded at most places, though. (except maybe Friday and Sunday nights) If that's the only time you have to lift during the day, it might be better to just stick to a home gym. Definitely check it out, though.

Maybe Incline Dumbell? Depending on volume, bench, CGBP, and dips might be plenty, though.

Haha! i didn't even think of incline press. I'll have to do BB though since my DBs only go to 75#. Thanks George!

I think my tri's are the limiting factor in my low BP numbers. I'm going to keep CGBP in the mix to build them up more. IIRC, a trainee's CGBP should be close to regular flat bench and mine isn't.
Took a pic after the workout yesterday. Take it with a grain of salt since its a mirror shot (which usually always look good), the light was forgiving, and it was right after a chest workout. Nothing like stacking the deck!

Step ups 15": 215# 4x3
SLDL: 355# 3x5
Hit 305# on the FSQ :D. Could only grind out singles so i'm going to work with that weight for at least 1 more session. Broke one of my nickle plates so i had to make 20# jump on the SLDL :blank:. Since my grip was the limiting factor again i decided to buy some straps last night....can't wait to see how much they help. GOing to move the shoulder workout to Sunday...feeling run down today with the 3 sessions in a row.
TIme for coffee!

I haven't lifted since Friday (11/6). The past week or so i've had back muscluar pain when i wake up (spinal erector/lat area) and various aches and pains throughout the day. Mainly in my legs (quads) and upper back/shoulder area is where i feel it most. I think all the very heavy (for me) low rep stuff started to catch up with me. My BW hasn't changed in the past 2 weeks even though i'm on a bulk. I'm still at 228# which leads me to believe that recovery might be an issue since i'm eating a lot but not gaining. Need to eat more!
I'm going to lift tonight since i can't take it anymore. I'm going stir crazy!

smart move on a week off. you probably need to schedule in a deload every 4-6 weeks and see if that helps.
and eat moar!! :eat:
:dreamy:
fishtanker Sat, November 14th, 2009, 08:13 AM how's ur sleep??
Sleep has been good. I think i just needed a week off.
So decided to go with a full week and start a new routine next week. I've been going with lots of low rep sets lately so i decided to go with Mastover's 20rep breathing squat routine for a complete change of pace. I ran this routine back in November of 2007 and had great results. I think i'm going to experience great results this time around since i'm much more experienced than i was back then. Squat form, depth in particular, is a night and day difference from then till now and the higher reps on bench are going to force me to focus and tighten up form. I'm very much looking foward to this. :D
Here's where i was at the end of the same routine back in December of 2007.
Friday:
Flat bench:
Warm up, warm up, 200x10, 200x6
Long bar row:
Warm up, 190x15, 190x15
Breathing squat:
Warm up, warm up, 280x22
Straight arm pullover:
45x20
SLDL:
195x15, 195x15
I'm going to start from this point on the bench, and squats but the SLDL's i'm going to bump up significantly. THe squats are at the same weight as i'm currently doing but, like i said, form is noticeably better now. My benching is around the same, its obvious i suck at bench, but rows are much higher. I'm 15# heavier now so i think things are going to progress nicely once i get going. :dreamy:
fishtanker Mon, November 16th, 2009, 06:54 PM 11/16/09
BB bench: 195# 1x12,10
BB bent row: 195# 2x12
BSQ: 285# 1x20
DB pullover: 35# 1x20
SLDL: 285# 1x12
I forgot how fucking brutal this workout is! I got a bad shooting pain in my head toward the end of the squats that got so bad a had to take 4 advil and lay down for 45mins afterwards. I hate taking advil cause it's supposed to affect muscle growth but at that point I didn't care. Hopefully this won't become and on going problem.
fishtanker Tue, November 17th, 2009, 08:28 AM Head is a little sore this morning but nothing like last night and nothing compared to my quads and glutes! I'm really confused on why that happened. I remember when i was doing this routine before that i would sometimes get the same head pain during the 20 reppers but didn't really think anything of it. The strange part is that when i was doing a lot of sets of BSQ's (last few months) and then finishing off with a 20 repper (same weight) i had no pain at all. At this point my only theories are that i'm not properly warmed up for that large volume set or the rows beforehand are somehow making my upper back/traps tense up during the squats causing the pain....either way it sucks. I'm going to try puting the squats first on Friday and maybe first doing a set or 2 of higher weight just to get in the groove.
BW is still at 228.5# this morning. I've added at least a 1/2 gallon of %2 milk a day in hopes of getting that scale to go up. I'll crash and burn on this routine if i don't eat enough to grow.
fishtanker Thu, November 19th, 2009, 08:29 AM 11/18/09:
BB Military: 125# 2x10 (easy)
BW Dips: 21, 13
BW Chins: 11, 9
BB curl: 85# 2x10
Going to pick up a pair of 5# and 2.5# plates this afternoon since i broke mine....dropping a 45# plate on them will do that and this routine will be hard without them. I haven't done curls in over a year and am a little embarrased that 85# was somewhat of a challenge :o;).
My wife and i discussed Cancun last night and we both decided that due to financial concerns we're not going to go in February but instead plan a much nicer vacation in the summer. So that means i have no excuses not to bulk up through the entire winter :D. I've also discovered that PB&J with a glass of milk is :dreamy:.
229.5# today

fishtanker Tue, November 24th, 2009, 07:13 PM Well after experiencing the head pain again on Friday i just decided to scrap that routine and try something else. Decided on a 4day bodypart split.
11/24/09: shoulders/tris
BB military: 125#1x10, 145# 5x5
1 arm corner press: 115# 2x8
CGBP: 175# 3x8
DB front raise 40# 2x8
Started a bit lighter on the military so i could have some room for steady progression....we'll see how that works. The plan for the rest of the week is back, legs/bi's, and chest. I decided to put bi's with legs in hopes that they would benefit from the additional hormone release.
No head pain today. :)
fishtanker Fri, November 27th, 2009, 09:21 AM 11/25/09:
BB bent row: 215# 1x10, 250# 5x5
2 arm long bar row (plates only): 215# 1x15
Bent arm pullover: 125# 4x4
BW pullups: 2x7, 1x6

:p;)
11/30/09:
FSQ: 215# 3x8
SLDL: 300# 2x10
DB bulgarians: 55#'s 3x6
Did some straight sets at a lower weight today since i've been slacking off the past few weeks. Everything went smoothy and the gloves have been helping with my grip issues pretty well.
fishtanker Thu, December 3rd, 2009, 09:02 AM 12/02/09:
BB bench: 205# 5x10,8,7,6,6
BW dips: 3x10
DB fly's: 50# 3x8
Decent workout. I'm going to pick up either a dip belt or sturdy backpak this weekend so i can add weight to the dips. My last backpak broke months ago and i never replaced it. I think dips give me better chest development than benching. Working the back tonight!
fishtanker Fri, December 4th, 2009, 01:28 PM 12/3/09:
BB bent row: 255# 5x5
2 arm long bar row (plates only): 220# 1x15
bent arm pullovers/BW pullups superset: 110# 1x10/BW x5
110# 1x8/BW x4
110# 1x6/ BW x3
Those supersets were brutal :D
fishtanker Sat, December 5th, 2009, 10:40 AM 12/5/09:
BB military: 150# 5x5
1 arm corner press (plates only): 112.5# 2x8
DB front raises: 40# 2x10
229# this morning. Will this scale ever go up? I can only eat so many cookies! :P
Big_D Sat, December 5th, 2009, 10:49 AM I know I'm late on this, but I believe you about the love handles ;).
Oh and it ain't luck.
fishtanker Mon, December 7th, 2009, 05:48 PM D knows what I'm talking about. ;)
12/7/09
BSQ: 335# 1x5, 350# 5x5
FSQ: 225# 3x6
GM: 235# 2x10
I've never done bsq followed by fsq before. The first couple reps on the fsq felt funny....it was like my body was telling me "something's backwards, bro"
fishtanker Wed, December 9th, 2009, 06:26 PM 12/09/09
BB bent row: 215# 1x8, 235# 1x8, 250# 1x7, 265# 4x4, 195# 2x12
BW pullups: 5,4,4,4
Got to shovel some nice wet snow today too. I guess winter is here :blank:
fishtanker Mon, December 14th, 2009, 09:51 AM I've been slacking off lately and i can't seem to shake it. I keep skipping workouts here and there and have no real direction when i get in the gym. Its been going on for about 2 months now.
I'm not really sure of the cause but i know that part of it is that i have no clear goal right now. I bulked to 230# and decided that i don't have the drive or desire to get any bigger.....my lifestyle just doesn't suit it. I don't want to cut right now cause i don't have that much fat to loose and biking season is over 3 mos away. So i'm kind of just coasting.
I try to lift 4x a week but seem to end up at 2-3x instead and with a 4 day bodypart split that just isn't going to cut it. Sometimes that'll mean i won't hit a particular bodypart for over a week. Based on this and my current mindset i'm just going to go with an upper lower split M, W, F which will allow me to hit everything 3x in a 2 week period. I'm going to try high rep week 1 and low rep week 2 in hopes that it keeps me interested. I'm also going to incorporate the timed deads again.
Maybe if i throw enought shit at the wall some of it will stick. :p
