View Full Version : How is this possible??!!?
Highway1 Mon, September 21st, 2009, 03:07 PM I work out 4 times a week and my job is physical also. Im not in a chair 8 hours a day, Im really moving heavy stuff. Here is where Im stumped. I should be taking in around 2799 calories a day with this intensity. Since Im cutting, I dropped to 1800.
If I need 2799 to maintain my weight but only take in 1800, shouldnt I lose weight??? How on earth can I do this and stay the same weight!
At 1800 calories a day, Im not tired, I feel pretty good. Even if my metabolism slows down, I should still lose weight. When I dont lose weight, what the hell am I burning for energy?

Well everyone is different and those calorie standards are just a guide. I was eating down in the 1100-1200 calories area and I didn't lose weight for 2 weeks. I would slowly move calories down 200-300 every two weeks until you see a drop in weight.
Lets not over look things.
If you are getting PLENTY of activity and you are eating good and not losing weight... you can either do more activity or eat less.
Maybe your workout needs some tweaking? Not sure what you are doing. Also what is your diet?
ConfuddledPanda Tue, September 22nd, 2009, 08:20 AM Starvation is not good, it really does more harm than good.
If your BMR is like 2800, plus activity.. Then you're in a major defeceit,
Reno_1ted Tue, September 22nd, 2009, 08:32 AM I agree, I would probably not reduce your cals further, they are already low.
Rather, I would start to look at WHAT you are eating to make up those calories, and what your training looks like. Take in Carbs morning and around your workout, avoid carbs in the late evening, ensure protien with every meal, and dont mix carbs and fat.
It isnt always about calories and beating a number. :)
john_e_turner_ii Tue, September 22nd, 2009, 02:26 PM Also, confirm you are really eating the calories you think you are. Make sure every single thing you put in your mouth is accounted for. I thought I was getting only 1700 calories until I took a serious inventory and found it was more around 2400. I was not going to lose weight at that rate.
Jaer Wed, September 23rd, 2009, 10:10 AM Also how long have you been eating at such a deficit? Is this a plateau, or have you not been able to lose anything from this starting point?
ybuddha Wed, September 23rd, 2009, 11:57 AM Steve there's a few things to look for here.
As mentioned above are you counting your calories correctly? underquoting is one of the most common mistakes people make when trying to cut down. Make sure every drink you have from a coffee, soft drink to alcoholic drink is included as well.
Secondly, it may be that you are actually cutting down on fat, but increasing your muscle mass. Muscle ways more than fat so this may also have an effect. A better guide is how your clothes are fitting especially across you waist?
brahm Wed, September 23rd, 2009, 05:28 PM I've ran into the same situation, where for almost 2 weeks I'd stay then same weight, and then poof the next day I wake up 3lbs less, and cotinue to drop a lb a day for a couple days... I have no idea why I drop weight like this, but.. The way I keep myself motivated is to just keep reminding yourself as long as your aren't eating a surplus of 3500 calories your not going to gain weight, and if your staying static and working out you most likely have to be putting on muscle to replace the fat.. which is a win in my book as just as much as seeing the scale tip. You can try adjusting your ratio, or taking a day then jumping back into things..or just keeping at it in the end it just comes down to consistency, and averages over an extended period of time.

needachange Thu, September 24th, 2009, 08:16 AM Just stick with it bro. It sounds like you are jumping around a lot trying different things. You've made a couple threads in regards to eating. Stick to one thing for a few months see if you make any changes. If not try something else. Jumping around and being inconsistent isn't going to do anything but drive you crazy. It's really not that complicated. Caloric Deficit = lose weight Caloric Surplus = gain weight.
Regardless if you are in a calorie deficit you'll lose weight. Don't expect to magically drop weight every week sometimes the scale might not budge. As long as you are in a caloric defecit and stay in one you will lose weight over time. It sounds to me like you are weighing yourself everyday or something. Maybe try putting the scale away in the closet for a few months, stick to your eating habits and then see later if anything has happened. If not then you're deffinitely doing something wrong.
