I just can't let this go by without a new, useless thread.

I'm very happy (and happily following) that you are on Twitter.

Now all we need you to do is TRY a Mac for 30 days without any preconceived notions and Obi-Wan's failure will be complete.

Seriously though, glad you are on board.

I admit, I don't know much about twitter, but, is it one of these things where people post the minute-by-minute mind-numbing minutiae that fills their excruciatingly dull lives? Things like like "Just bought some dog food today.....think I'll clean the kitchen later....Aunt Millie is visiting from out of town...", etc. I hate stuff like that.

Also, aren't twitter entries called "tweets"? Just saying the word "tweet" makes my testosterone drop by about 300 points. Hell, just writing the word tweet made it drop 150 points. Good thing I don't have to lift today.

That's what everyone thinks twitter is, and it can be used that way, and some people do.

But what it REALLY is is like a dynamic message forum where you are able to follow various conversations, topics, friends etc in one stream. It is like E-mail, internet forums and a dash of facebook all in one. It is an efficient way to reach many people at once (who have decided to be reached by you) or to keep in touch with friends

AND my favorite part is the 140 character limit forces concise, to the point, pithy communication.

No I don't tweet 'I just ate oatmeal'. No one gives a crap I just had oatmeal. but I will tweet a funny joke, or a link to something I think my friends will find useful, or a 'hey how about we get together on Saturday?' etc, etc

Damn straight. Twitter's bad enough of a name in and of itself.

Yes, a lot of people do the same textual diarrhea used on other social networking tools/sites.

There is some use for it, though. But I use it mainly as a newsource and I don't post much myself.

I always though very little of Twitter based on what I knew of it. I only opened an account because I had so many requests to do so. Now that I'm into it a little more, it's actually pretty cool. Sure, there are some really pointless, um, tweets (yeah, I can barely type that without cringing), but for the most part I've enjoyed what I've seen. I also like being able to share brief updates with my followers (again, such a creepy name... I think twitter has a corner on the horrible nomenclature market).

Anyway, it's been fun, and I'm glad I joined.

BTW, akm3, if you want to order me a mac I'll be happy to use it.

I agree with JoeSchmo I think its a waste of time and for people who don't have a hell of a lot going on in their lives to begin with.

oh yay lets see what John's up to...

... just took a dump...
... wiping my ass now...
... looking at myself in the mirror now, I'm buff.....

yay!!!!!

But I suppose there are alot of people who have a job that doesn't require them to use their brain or do anything that gets their heart beating and as a result they fill their time with twitter, facebook, whatever.

Wait, so you're saying:

1) I don't have much of anything going on in my life
2) I only talk about things that are stupid and pointless
3) I don't use my brain at my Sr. Network Admin job (btw, "a lot" is two words, and "them" is plural so you should have said "their brains", not "their brain"; same for "heart beating" instead of the correct "hearts beating")
4) I don't get my heart beating doing my workouts (workouts that I'm 100% positive would destroy you)
5) I fill my empty life with facebook, twitter, whatever

Way to generalize, kid. :blank:

Wo wo wo, lets not get off on the wrong foot here. I apologize for generalizing like that but I was thinking more from the subscribers point of view. If one has the time to sit around all day and wait for you to twit then obviously there's not a whole lot going on to keep one occupied. Obviously if you're a student with free time between classes and I suppose if you're interested in that sort of thing, you might tweet (?) in to find out the outcome of john taking dump.

I'm going to go eat dinner now and the rest of you can jump all over my case for stating my opinion however flawed it may be in your perfect eyes.

Good evening.

John never tweets about taking dumps, he only PM's those details to a select group of JSF members. His last one was a real growler, and unfortunately, he strained an ab in the process. Probably due to bad form. I suggested posting a youtube video to get a proper form check.

I don't use this twitter thing, but with any customizable internet application it will most likely be as useful as you, the users, make it. From what I have seen lately, most music groups, companies, politicians, public organizations, peoples of interest, are on there. I could see it being useful as an extremely up to date, latest news device if you make it that. I could also see it being an amazing time suck. But, this description would apply to the internet as a whole. It could be amazingly useful, or an amazing time suck.

Although, we must allow that some things on the internet do actually suck and are constructed in such a way, that they will most likely never be made useful by anyone. Twitter seems basic and stripped down enough, that there isn't too much to get in the way of making it useful.

I see the usefulness of it from a companies point of view. One time our provider Rackspace went down and we learned from their twitter page they were experiencing a power outage.

My company wants to use it but like most companies that cannot make decisions they cannot figure who should be tweeting and what they should be tweeting about.
