I have no idea what to put on broccoli. I know cheese is out of the question so I'm just wondering what everyone puts to give it some taste.

View Full Version : What do you eat with your broccoli? bodine1231 Wed, May 19th, 2004, 03:25 AM I have no idea what to put on broccoli. I know cheese is out of the question so I'm just wondering what everyone puts to give it some taste. taffer Wed, May 19th, 2004, 04:08 AM lemon juice, pepper, and herbs! Presse Wed, May 19th, 2004, 08:56 AM I have it raw, uncooked - before my main course; it's like a crunchy apetizer for me! :d_smile: haven97 Wed, May 19th, 2004, 09:04 AM Olive oil and olives when I'm lucky otherwise its steamed with nothing on it. karatetricker Wed, May 19th, 2004, 09:25 AM I see no problem with throwing a slice of fat free cheese on it. I used to do that all the time. Now I usually just eat it plain. Musicguy Wed, May 19th, 2004, 09:39 AM These herbs go well with broccoli (and any "cabbage famiy" veggies): Thyme Ground caraway seed And I also like: Chives A little olive oil and/or butter is also good. txitalian Wed, May 19th, 2004, 11:49 AM Lemon Pepper McCormicks Montreal Chicken seasoning For lunch today I mixed up whole wheat rotini, tuna and broccoli florets.Good stuff Jason chops Wed, May 19th, 2004, 12:18 PM i love broccoli! you can cook it with chicken broth instead of water for more flavor. sprinkle a little salt and pepper, a few squirts of "i can't believe it's not butter". (don't go overboard on the squirts though since it's not a truly fat free product ) tomato sauce or stewed tomatoes on top (my favorite is pomi brand) fat free cheese italian seasoning w/ salt/pepper/ i cant believe its not butter imsuxok? Wed, May 19th, 2004, 01:43 PM Fresh minced ginger Soya sauce Fresh minced garlic Olive oil Sesame oil Pepperoncino (sp?) flakes Lemon juice Vinegar (balsamic, rosemary, raspberry, etc.,) Mincing ginger and garlic is a lot of work with a knife, but it's a breeze with a microplane grater. TheLemonSong Wed, May 19th, 2004, 02:01 PM I like cauliflower and broccoli together...sometimes I think its not the herbs that add flavour but other foods entirely...like peas and carrots, corn and spinach, etc. ABguy Wed, May 19th, 2004, 02:18 PM Why not cheese ? I use ff cheese.....adds a few grams protein too. I can't believe it's butter is good on it also. benca1 Wed, May 19th, 2004, 07:07 PM Just butter for godsakes. One quarter TB of real butter goes a long way and it's only 25 calories! What's so good about living without enjoying how something tastes? 1/2 TB is 50 calories. A lite beer has TWICE that amount of empty calories. 1/2 TB is a pretty healthy pat of butter. The taste allows me to eat and enjoy more broccoli. ODB72 Wed, May 19th, 2004, 08:14 PM I put hot sauce, specifically Louisiana hot sauce, on all my cooked veggies and on a lot of other foods as well. No calories and spices things up. :o benca1 Thu, May 20th, 2004, 12:51 AM I put hot sauce, specifically Louisiana hot sauce, on all my cooked veggies and on a lot of other foods as well. No calories and spices things up. :o Oh hold on you reminded me, I got it. Get a wok, and drop in your veggies over very high heat. Throw in some soy sauce and some garlic-chili paste. Bam, great vegetables without an ounce of fat. Throw in some thinly sliced chicken (before the veggies), cook some rice, and there's a whole meal. No fat. Godfrey Thu, May 20th, 2004, 03:45 AM when i was younger i used to occasionally eat it with penutbutter, havent have broccoli in a long time, but tastes good with penutbutter give it a try :D txitalian Thu, May 20th, 2004, 01:07 PM Oh hold on you reminded me, I got it. Jason rfrias Thu, May 20th, 2004, 01:52 PM I use either olive oil or butter and then add some garlic salt. I read in a recent study that the thing about green vegetables is that as nutritious as they are, most of the nutrients get wasted without fat to carry them into your system. So you need to make sure that when you eat them you use something with fat in it to help bind the nutrients. Hell, even if this is all crap, it sure tastes great and the harm a teaspoon of butter can do to you is negligible at best. I'll look for the link and post it if I can find it. benca1 Thu, May 20th, 2004, 05:25 PM What do you use to grease the wok? Jason I think you can just use Pam. I actually haven't tried that. I pour a little conola oil in bowl, dip a paper towel into it, and wipe it around the wok. I don't need much, because my wok in non-stick. I'll try Pam next time. But wok cooking is mostly a winter deal for me, in the summer it's all about my Weber. (and that's a charcoal grill, a gas grill is just outside, upside down broiling. ;) ) |
