View Full Version : Reducing Weights to Tighten Form
huxald Sun, July 26th, 2009, 09:33 AM Hello All,
The other day, I reduced the weight on my exercises in order to tighten my form. I found that I got a better burn in the muscles I was focusing on.
However, I wonder if this is a good idea, wrt promoting hypertrophy.
any input is greatly appreciated.
Flex Mon, July 27th, 2009, 02:41 PM This will happen with better form because you are isolating the muscle group compared to getting assistance from others (i.e swinging your back when doing curls [bad form] vs. pure isolation of biceps will cause increase burning and muscle stimulation of the biceps [good form]). This is what you want, form > weight.
Foley Mon, July 27th, 2009, 03:01 PM If you cannot do the exercise properly, then you are using too much weight. This doesn't mean you can't and shouldn't do heavy weights (for you).

I think a heavy lift done poorly only tells you one thing: you're doing it wrong. In my book it doesn't count for anything. You're only seeing how far you can push yourself before you fly apart.
As far as hypertrophy goes, perfect form can only contribute. Apart from injury prevention, you're doing a better job targeting the intended muscle groups, and by keeping a tight lock on where everything is you're putting the bulk of the work on the weakest parts of the lift, as it should be. I'll bet you a buck that dropping the weight to make your form perfect will actually make you BIGGER.
cajunman Tue, July 28th, 2009, 12:43 PM Depends on the exercise. Some exercises are more effective with a little looser form. It's a natural cycle - pack on the weight, loosen up the form, tighten up the form, pack on some more weight. Lather rinse repeat.
Lift smart. Cheating on curls or kickbacks is pointless. A little "english" on rows, pulls, shrugs, presses has some value. Just remember to tighten the form back down - some guys just cross over to the other side and never come back. (Some guys never go.)
Flex Tue, July 28th, 2009, 03:43 PM I find it SO funny when people go to squat and they only go a quarter way down then later I hear them telling people "Yah man I squat 500":lol::lol::lol: I'M ALL ASS TO GRASS SQUAT BABY!

Couldn't say it any better. My gym has less than 450lbs worth of weight and most of my workouts never jump into the 200lb range. Still get a pretty good workout ( I think ) .
andysutils Tue, August 11th, 2009, 03:15 PM never ever sacrifice weight for form, all you endup doing it contracting your muscles incorrectly and I think we all know where that ends :(
