Word of advice:

Dont use their default values if you can avoid it. Input everything you eat as a custom food. Their numbers arent very close to what you'll find on labels.

The only things I use the default values for are things like veggies and fruit that dont come with labels at the store.

This is good advice :)

For $20, the PC version is a nice upgrade. It is much easier to enter/format everything, and there are additional useful reports.

Thanks guys. I naturally did that, 'cause you know how it is, you have your own special meal or conconction that you like, with your own ingredients.

I was looking at some of their calcs....very strange

The custom feature is the best part. I put in my own stuff and I know it's accurate to my own specs.

They just need to have a custom feature for activities. For now, I have to juggle around with the times in semi-related activities, to get the calories burned where I need them to be.

Allen - I'll check out the full version. Hopefully, the upgrade is web-based. It's great to toggle back and forth between the work PC and home.

Thanks again for the advice.

One thing that I dont like is the fact that you cant combine custom foods as ingredients.

On their default foods, you can add portions together as ingredieants of a whole meal, but not with custom foods.

Agreed. I spend forever combining my ingredients into what I actually ate. And I have heard many others make that same complaint that some of the figures seem way off. I know some here use DietPower. Maybe we can get a head-to-head comparision?

Allen,

Can you import your web account into the software if you buy it? Just thinking that I like having an account of EVERYTHING I've done since I started and would hate to re-enter all those values to the software when I had already done it on the website.

Jaer
is lazy like that.

No. I emailed them about this and they said it may be in the next release. I would plop down alot more that 20 bones to get that feature. A lot of other people have made similiar requests too.

just wondering, when you guys get the default values for food (vegies in particular) do you use the raw or cooked measurments, i dont think it makes much of a difference, but still nice to know :)

I'll certainly pay the money for it if it works with their web site. Until then, no dice. I would especially pay the money if they also had a PDA version you could use and would import into the main software.

I'm thinking of making a web app like fitday, but a little more of what ppl here would like (and only for ppl on here)... anyone intrested?
I'd have it so you can share foods and upload (csv format) foods....
it would be a good amount of work, I've already started it, but its a ways off... any interest?

Hi,

I use DietPower and LOVE it. I had a look at FitDay about 2 months back. Although my look at it was by no means exhaustive, my initial impression was that entering 'recipies' for things I concoct on a regular basis was not 'user-friendly'. I in now way want to discourage the use of FitDay - the site undoubtedly does provide an outstanding service. But after a cursory look at both FitDay and DietPower, I opted for the second.

Here are what I consider it's selling points:
- I can enter custom 'exercises', food items, recipies;
- exercises which I do often, or food items I eat often, appear on a quick-list which makes it super easy to enter in 'today's log;
- the SW calculates and adjusts (daily) Metabolic rate - I think that's great, cause this is a refinement to the often-used Harris-Benedict formula, based on your actual data;
- one can set weight goals (up or down), and the software has great tools to help you track progress up or down over time;
-if you screw up your metabolism (for example cut cals too drastically) this does show up in its calculations; the SW tells you before you feel the ill effects of a screwed up metabolism; in view of the number of people who make the very unfortunate error of severe caloric reduction in their attempt at weight loss, I think this is a valuable feature;
- entering a typical day's foods/activities takes me typically less than 5 minutes (now that I'm used to the program);

On the down side:
I have run into a few bugs with the program - but I've been able to get around those rather easily. The authors of the program issue bug fixes on a regular basis.

I'd love to see other members of the forum post specifics about their experiences (good or bad) with FitDay, as a comparison

The big disadvantage for me about DietPower is that it is not web based and there is no Mac version of the software. :(
Oh well.

I agree, syncing with the website would be the 'killer app'.

What I do is install the application to a 256m.b. "key drive" and take that between work and home so it is always where I'm "at".

Any of the various web-based file storage services makes this easy as well. I use FitDay PC, and use FastMail (www.myfastmail.com) as my email provider. They also provide file storage as part of your account. It's as easy as a quick web-based upload/download, then run the application wherever you are.

I like this MUCH better than the web-based version. The only pain is if you forget the upload before leaving.

I like fitday because it does the math for me. Don't have to worry about converting grams to ounces, etc.

I use CalorieKing.com.

It’s $20 a year and has a pretty extensive food database. I don’t know if I’ll renew when the time comes, because access to their food data is free.

That would be excellent.

Web-based , ability to add custom foods as ingredients, and adding your own kind of cardio/activities under the activities tab...thoses 3 quickly com to mind as improvments to the software

I have more suggestions, if/when you get to that point.

Hopefully I'll have some time this weekend to hack on it, its not a huge project (yet), but I will be VERY happy to implement anything feasable!

Presse,
I've been using the home (not web) version of FitDay for about 7 weeks now. I've never looked at Diet Power, so I'll compare based on what you have written about it.

I can enter custom 'exercises', food items, recipies;
- exercises which I do often, or food items I eat often, appear on a quick-list which makes it super easy to enter in 'today's log

This appears in FitDay as "Favorites", you enter certain custom meals (somewhat lengthy process) but they stay in a sidebar for access later. Same with exercises.
the SW calculates and adjusts (daily) Metabolic rate - I think that's great, cause this is a refinement to the often-used Harris-Benedict formula, based on your actual data

This is something Fitday does not do, to my knowledge. The program does not tell me whether I've dropped too low on my calories. I had a bad experience with this for a few days, but I really should have known better anyway.

one can set weight goals (up or down), and the software has great tools to help you track progress up or down over time

FitDay also allows you to make several goals, but you can see only one at a time. You have to switch between them to see the results.

Hope that helps anyone make the decision. Basically, they sound very similar, except for that running metabolism counter.

Fitday PC v1 is pretty good, like I've said.

But, the developers could make v2 a true category killer if they implemented just a few features that they seem to have already developed, and streamlined the UI a bit more.

I expect Version 2 to be fantastic.

Love www.fitday.com but I agree with all posts regarding it's drawbacks.

Here are a few tips for you all:

Create Custom foods such as

"---------- Meal 1 ------------" with 0's in all macronutrients.

you can then select this custom foods to divide up your meals on the food listing.

Also, the custom food drop down list only shows a portion of your custom foods, so something I've done is I've selected my most used foods (Top 20) and prefixed them with ">". The sort in my drop down now lists everything begining with > first.

Thoughts?
