DFS Wed, June 3rd, 2009, 07:05 AM People still watch boxing? LOL, just kidding. :)
The last boxing match I watched from beginning to end was Tyson-Holyfield II. Since then I've found real fighting, MMA. No disrespect to boxers at all, but it's so one dimensional. It's like comparing the home run derby to the actual game of baseball.
Klitschko I know...who is this Haye character?

Cruiser champ with a BIG mouth. Hope he get's KO'd.
DFS Wed, June 3rd, 2009, 09:21 AM Cruiser champ with a BIG mouth. Hope he get's KO'd.Interesting. Maybe I'll tune in. The TUF finale is on the 20th too on free TV (Spike), so there may be a conflict. What channel will it be on, if it's PPV then no?
DFS Wed, June 3rd, 2009, 09:24 AM Doing my homework...boxing is insane with all their weight classes and organizations and such. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxing_champions#Current_champions) I hope MMA can stay away from that type of confusion.
EDIT: Also notice the lack of Americans on that list. Expect that not to change...many boxing gyms don't exist anymore or are being converted to MMA gyms. High school wrestling is huge in this country, and that is fast proving to be one of if not the best base in MMA. So now all these high school and college wrestlers have somewhere to go other than the Olympics. Boxing will never die, but it will in my lifetime become irrelevant.

I think boxing is still very popular overall, on a worldwide scale, just NOT as popular in the US.
For example, the Klitschko-Haye fight is being held in a German soccer stadium, and sold 45,000 tickets in the first TWO days.
Europeans are taking over. And that's okay with me, I just like watching the best fighters, I don't care where they were born.

Dana is famous for pitting MMA against boxing, but the way I see it, they are different sports....and one doesn't necessarily preclude the existence of the other. I like MMA more, but I also like boxing. Boxers still get much bigger purses than MMA fighters.

It's one of my MMA soapbox pet peeves when people call a boxing match a fight. It's not a fight, it's a punching contest. MMA is light years closer to how an actual fight goes down.
But you are correct, they are very different sports and they both have their place. Boxers currently blow MMA guys out of the water with prize money. However, in this country that won't last much longer, 5 maybe 10 years until the tide turns on that. And also MMA guys are making a killing in endorsements these days...far out earning their purses with endorsement money.

Yeah, I totally agree here. The best MMA guys will nearly always beat the best boxers in a fight with minimal rules (which is essentially what MMA is). Kimbo, with just a little MMA training was able to easily beat Ray Mercer, who used to be a halfway decent boxer.

"Used to be" is correct. Ray Mercer was WAY past his prime when he fought Kimbo....that's just not a fair comparison. Mercer was 45 or 46 years old at the time and out of shape, plus older=slower reflexes.

Yeah, we need to get Floyd Mayweather in the ring against B.J. Penn dammit. That would be fun to watch. I remember Mayweather saying a few negative things about MMA fighters. I'd love to see him in an MMA ring though just to see what happens
DFS Fri, June 5th, 2009, 07:57 PM Mercer is scheduled to box Tim Sylvia next Saturday in an MMA cage. But the card is looking a little light, not sure if it's actually gonna happen. (http://mmajunkie.com/event/615/adrenaline-mma-iii.mma)
UFC 99 next Saturday actually airs live here in the states at 3pm, so you could actually catch them both if the Mercer/Sylvia fight is on TV. Mercer is 48 years old now, wtf is he doing???

Trying to cash in I guess....lol. I even read a rumor that he and Tommy Morrison were trying to set up some kinda rematch. During their original match, Mercer delivered to Morrison one of the most brutal knockouts in boxing ever. Be that as it may, I don't think most of us want to watch a rematch with a coupla geriatrics beating each other with walkers and canes.
Ok...I call the Sylvia/Mercer fight like this: Sylvia wins via TKO when Mercer breaks a hip climbing into the ring. :D
