What are so good about veggies? Why do they make or break a diet?

View Full Version : Veggies! LarryNC May 17th, 2004, 07:59 AM What are so good about veggies? Why do they make or break a diet? guava May 17th, 2004, 08:28 AM I'm sort of neutral about vegetables. The good thing about vegetables: they are very nutrient dense for the calories that you get. Without vegetables, it's nearly impossible to meet all your nutrient requirements, and it's very hard to get full on 1500 to 1800 or even 2000 calories a day if you don't eat vegetables. Unfortunately, I don't like the taste that much, so I usually find that I'm just choking them down. I prefer fruit, and eat loads of it, but vegetables generally contain more vitamins, and less calories and sugar than fruit does. TheLemonSong May 17th, 2004, 03:06 PM Guava, I'm surprised to hear you don't like veggies too much...which do you like and dislike? How do you prepare them? I'm in my early 20s, so almost everyone I know avoids veggies like the plague, but I like certain ones and prepare them in a variety of different ways....most "vegetables" are actually fruits anyway (anything w/ seeds..peppers, zuccini, tomato, etc.) guava May 17th, 2004, 04:37 PM Ah, vegetables. I love red pepper and green onion. Usually I put them in a salad with tomatoes and cucumber. Even better with ham and hard boiled egg on it. I like fresh steamed broccoli. Asparagus is nice. Zucchini is good, but only if it's barbecued. Thank goodness I now have an electric grill. Spinach is okay, but only if mixed with cheese, cream, or eggs. Carrots are not bad, either raw or cooked. Beets are nice, but messy. Brussels sprouts are not bad. Green beans and corn are fine, but they're not the most nutrient-packed. guava May 17th, 2004, 04:39 PM Okay, I need to learn how to do more with spinach and brussels sprouts. Any recipes out there? taffer May 17th, 2004, 06:01 PM ok im a vegie lover vegies do sooooo much for you! not only do they taste great (can be disputed :p) but they have tons on good nutrients in them, infact, if a bodybuilder plans to cut fruit out of their diet, vegies can fill that nutrient gap in alot of places, so they are extra important then! now alot of the carbs in vegies come from fiber, so naturally they are low-calories, extremly low GI and fill you up, because your body has been given all this fuel it has to put more energy into digesting it! but it cant digest the fiber!! so its burning all this energy, raising your metabolic rate, which increases fat loss!!! now that fiber also does you wonders for other parts of your body, the fresh nutrients go to fueling your body so it can grow, all while raising your metabolism and help burn more fat so thats why alot of people recomend eating vegies with most/all your meals (except pre/post workout) LarryNC May 17th, 2004, 09:56 PM hmm im starving for bfast like 1-2 hours after i eat, maybe i should eat a bunch of broc. with my bfast, i like the taste.. but it makes me very sick inside though :( can I sub broc for califlower or carrots? I eat 4 apples a day, natures candy, natures tooth brush, and good for ya! pectin! whats pectin do anyway? imsuxok? May 17th, 2004, 11:00 PM Okay, I need to learn how to do more with spinach and brussels sprouts. Any recipes out there? Brussels sprouts are nice with a breadcrumb/nut topping. I like walnuts best in this preparation. Spinach is great for mixing in with other stuff. I often mix spinach with rice and poached, flaked fish, or fill a pita with spinach, tomatoes and egg whites. If you want to eat it on its own, spinach tastes nice with freshly grated nutmeg, pepper and a drop of olive oil; go easy on the nutmeg or you won't taste anything else. |
