ok, i have this Whey protein powder drink mix. you probably ALL know what i mean :)

so now im wondering what i should use with the shake for maximum Health :D lol...

i can get soymilk, any juice, water, or milk.

the problem with milk is that its probably not too good for me as to how im trying to loose fat..

Juice has a lot of Carbs..

Water is.. well its water and with this non sweetened stuff its nasty as heck..

and soymilk could work too,

which one is best?

I've been using water with my Whey shakes. Yeah, it's not a chocloate malt with ice cream...but if you chug it the first few times, it does get better. I feel that a person should take in water whenever possible, but that's just my theory on things. :D

From the fat loss only perspective, you'd have to go with water. But as you say, it's not the best taste in the world.

Personally I mix mine with semi-skimmed milk. As long as you can incorporate it into your diet, then it doen't really matter. Milk is well balanced nutritionally and is a good source of calcium. It also gives the shakes a better texture and is more filling.

With regards to Gregg's comments, I agree that water intake is key to health and fat loss, but I prefer to take my water in 'clean' and make sure I get my quota on top of anything else.

If you use water, try to use ice cold water, or at the very least the coolest water you can get. I've found that when I mix my whey with ice cold water, it's much more palatable to me than water straight from the tap. Or maybe I'm just weird that way. :D

EDIT: DOH! I see you have the unflavored or unsweetened sort. Haven't crossed that bridge myself, sorry!

I use skim milk. It's a good source of Low-GI carbs and a few extra grams of protein.

I usually use water while cutting but sometimes post workout I have milk, pb, and ice in my shake. It depends on my calorie intake for the day. If you are under on cals then milk can add an extra 90 calories. Like you said it tastes much better.

that is quite possibly the worst PWO shake possible, besides having a coke. Preworkout that is perfect, but PWO u need water, sugar (gatorade) and protein.

i think he meant in addition to his protein. i personally use 1% milk, whey and throw a banana in there. sometimes a tablespoon or two of peanut butter for variety. if you are going to use gatorade make it the powdered form. the liquid does not have dextrose.

I use 1% milk in all my protein shakes. It tastes better and it's good for you.

the whole point of PWO is to deliver the protein as quickly as possible. The huge fat content in PB and moderate amount if milk SLOW THIS DOWN.

the great milk debate. yup the fat will slow the uptake of the protein. the carbs have been shown to be more important post workout anyway. milk also contains casein protein which has been shown to help retain nitrogen. it also gives you a large insulin spike to help your muscles recover. so the moral of my story is to drink your milk post workout. if you are concerned with protein uptake use skim milk and skip the peanut butter. this is a pretty big debate and most people believe you MUST have protein after a workout but many scientific studies show the insulin spike is more inportant. the choice is yours.

def. makes sense. However, where does it say milk gives higher insulin response than dextrose?

I used to only use skim milk, then went to water and now I'm back to skim milk. I've read that taking Whey with water is far less effective than with milk in muscle building.

i didnt say that. i honestly dont know which gives a higher insulin response. the milk is convenient for me as i dont have dextrose. i have thought about trying it though.

alot of people dont use milk because they this it slows down the absorbtion of the protein, but what they dont realise is that milk creates a large insuln response, compared to its glucose response (GI) thats why alot of people are fooled
i know a few experts that swear they muscle gains just by having milk PWO, and it does make sence, insuln is anabolic preworkout and anti-catabolic post workout (have it with both meals if you want!)

if you want the best results PWO go for some milk if it fits your diet, but dont stress out if you cant add it, as long as your other PWO foods are good you shouldnt have a problem

well you shouldnt use ONLY dextrose, and you shouldnt use ONLY milk, a mixture of the 2 would be best! even throwing in a banana or some oats for some more carbs would be nice
its about the quality of the carbs (micronutrients of the food) that makes alot of the difference, combining several foods will give you the best outcome

ok, so in conclusion, im going to use skim milk.. (8 oz) and a bannana!

now im kind of really new to this percise(sp) way of health and eating..
but what i did pick up was that you shouldnt have too many carbs if your not going to be moveing too much..

im in the gym from 2-4 or 3-5 about 2 hours

i usually would take the mix as soon as i come home.. and then try not to eat too many carbs for the rest of the day (evening). i may eat some fruits (carbs?? but low calories.. or i dunno, i dont want to eat soemthing fattening :)) around 7 pm but nothing after that..

am i supposed to eat more carbs even AFTER i have worked out?
whats this insulin spike??

If it's not a Post workout Shake I just put in a few icecubes, some water and some peanut butter. Makes it thick but cold. Very nice with chocolate.
