View Full Version : Just got Dextrose
JackC1027 Wed, April 22nd, 2009, 03:11 PM I just got a shipment of dextrose in the mail along with some samples of protein.
I have some questions though:
1.) How much should I take with one protein shake?
2.) Do I mix it in with the shake?
3.) Whats it taste like?
On Fitday.com my breakdown for the yesterday was:
Protein: 46%
Carbs: 34%
Fat: 21%
Thanks guys!

Dextrose is a fast digesting carb source. Typically, it is taken pre/post workout. And for skinny hardgainers it can be used at other times during the day. There is no "one" arbitrary amount that we can recommend. This depends entirely on your stats, goals, bodyfat level, total daily carb allowances, and your response to a quick spike of insulin. Insulin, when released, is going to hit your fat stores before entering the muscle cells. If your glycogen levels are near full (not on a keto based diet) then dextrose might impede progress. Give us some more info to go on regarding your diet, and the members here can give you some good advise.

Trying to lose weight, and gain muscle.
Not sure of bodyfat level, but I am trying to get down to about 210lbs.
I am going to workout now, and want to know how much I should take after my workout with a protein shake.

I've tried varying amounts from 25 gms to 60 gms. For me 60 grams was too much. Too many carbs, overkill. 25 grams seems to be too little for me. So I just take about 40 grams with 45 grams of protein powder (30 grams of protein), and 5 gms of creatine monohydrate, and 16 ozs of water. Shake it up good and down it immediately post-workout.

Yes, we perfectly understand. :) However, we need to know your daily calories and macro's to advise properly....you may need NO dextrose at all, and go exclusively with protein for post workout (when in itself, will supply an insulin spike) if fat loss, lean mass accrual is your goal.
JackC1027 Thu, April 23rd, 2009, 12:45 AM I've heard people on this forum say macro's before, and I'm not exactly sure what you mean. Here is the chart from fitday.com of what I've eaten today.

Have you read the stickies (http://forums.johnstonefitness.com/showthread.php?t=45975)?

Took the words out of my mouth...
Or should I say...you typed exactly what I was thinking when I saw the current stats versus the goals...

Yeah, I was using dextrose but I just stopped and eat oats instead because I was not seeing cutting progress while still eatting dextrose. I think if I had more muscle it would be better, but now it just doesn't work in my cut.
JackC1027 Sat, May 9th, 2009, 10:44 PM Ok, I am going to give dextrose a try, seeing as how I already have it. Here is what I am going to try, this is Post-Workout:
61g Iso Pure: 50 G Protein
80g Dextrose
6g BCAA
This is done on top of the 25g Protein and 6g BCAA before working out.
This seems like an awful lot of powders I am going to have to mix in one small blender-bottle. Here's a pic of the powders.

Does this look good?
Dizmal Mon, May 11th, 2009, 01:23 AM 80g dextrose?!
Dial it down, start with 30g carb/ 50g protein. If you still feel hypo after working out with 30g, go to 40g and so on until your body tells you you've had enough.
80g is A LOT! I'd be packing on fat like a mofo if I did that much. But i'm sensitive to carbs.
Personally, I ditched the dextrose/WMS and now I stick with a few(40gs worth) powdered donut holes or a pastry post work out and slam some protein. I get some solids in me, sugars and protein. Works great, tastes delicious and since it's "food" it fills me up!! :D
