Today I saw a link for this article and I thought - ooh, a list of clean calories that aren't expensive, hoping for some new ideas.

17 Foods With The Most Caloric Bang For Your Buck (http://www.manolith.com/2009/04/19/17-foods-with-the-most-caloric-bang-for-your-buck/)

Wow was I shocked - its a list of restaurant food that is crazy high calorie + fat.

Sad part is I've eaten 5 of these items before.

The most surprising to me was the Chili's Chicken Tacos
Calories: 2020
Fat (g): 104
Saturated Fat (g): 25
Sugar: n/a
Sodium(mg): 6050

I expect many of these foods to be high calorie, but I would have never guessed that 3 tacos would have more calories than I now consume in a day.

While I won't keep the strict diet up forever, I suspect that I will ALWAYS be aware of the nutritional value of what I eat from now on - some of these foods are downright deceptive.

For the record, I've eaten 5 of these items before, with the worst being the Spaghetti and Meatballs from Macaroni Grill - since I'm sure I not only ate all of it, I also ate a loaf of their evil bread soaked in oil...

Calories: 2430
Fat (g): 128
Saturated Fat (g): n/a
Sugar (g): n/a
Sodium (mg): 5290

How many of these items did you eat before you found JSF? :)

Man, I love chilis and they are the first two foods on the list!

After reading that list, I've definitely had most of that stuff, and I still do when I go out on the weekends, but this makes me seriously reconsider what I am going to consider a cheat meal!

Part of the problem with these meals is portion size. Instead of $10, charge me $6 and give me less.

The article says that pizza is designed for 2 people. That was news to me...

If only! Can you imagine it, if restaurants started having a "small portions" option on menus? Lots of places say something like "vegetarian preparation available" or "make this low carb." If only they would start making items portionable.

Course, some places it's just hard getting the nutrition info. A girl I work with just got an insulin pump in to assist her diabetes, and she needs to know the exact carb info on what she eats. She even called one of the places we were heading for lunch, Applebees, and all they could tell her was "some of our items list the weight watchers points!" as if that solved her problem.

One place around me, a brewery called Iron Hill, has a 600 calorie section in their menu which has like 4 or 5 options in it with the meals being in a 400-600 calorie range. I thought that was pretty cool! If only more places would have such options.

Yeah, I've seen that too, but sometimes those options don't sound totally appetizing. I've been to Iron Hill before and they do have some good looking healthy options though.

How can the tuna melt be over 2000 calories? I would estimate a tuna sub to be around 1000 calories: 400 for the 12" roll ~500 for the tuna salad, and +/-100 for the cheese. It doesn't make any sense to me...any thoughts?
