chinese food. chicken broccoli steamed with white rice.
SWO LIFE Fri, April 10th, 2009, 07:38 PM Wendy's ultimate chicken grill, no Mayo:
280 Calories, 3.5 grams of fat, 33 Carbs, 28 Grams of protein.
Or get 2 and throw out 1 of the buns.
You're looking at around 1000 calories at Panera bread if you get something that tastes alright.

A large chili at wendy's isn't a bad choice, especially if you are looking for lots of fiber and protein.
Jay-R Sat, April 11th, 2009, 05:03 AM I'm in work right now and have brought food with me (Two turkey breast sandwiches, a homemade protein bar and water), but if I hadn't brought them with me and had to eat out of desperation:
I'd walk over the the shop and purchase one bottle of Dr. Pepper, one bottle of Irn-Bru, one large bag of cheese Doritos, one salsa dip, one Scotch pie and a packet of gum.
Then, return to my work's café, purchase two small portions of cheese to throw over the Doritos (Which I'd now have placed on a plate), microwave the mofo until melted and lather in the salsa dip.
After destroying my purchases, I'd once again perster the café lady, only this time for a large portion of fries and curry sauce.
I'd probably return late from my break, though, I imagine that nonsense to last longer than the allocated fifteen minutes.
Mmmm.

If I'm stuck without food and I have enough time, I'll pop into a grocery store and buy an apple and a yogurt, because that's cheapest, and that's usually my priority. Second choice is to buy a double cheeseburger from McDonald's. But it's probably healthier to go with that sandwich from Wendy's.
I don't usually do Wendy's, but when my Mom picked me up from the airport last, that's what we found. Man, those sandwiches are tasty. :eat: I almost thought that they must inject those breasts with fat to get them so juicy.
If I want to go for the maximum available nutrition for minimum time, I'll get a grilled chicken salad from McDonald's or Wendy's or pretty much anywhere that's the closest option. Most places will have a grilled chicken salad on the menu. :tu: You'll usually get about 20-30 grams of protein, 2 to 5 grams of fat, 10 grams of carbs or so with 3 or more grams of fibre, and about 300 calories in total.
malnar Sat, April 11th, 2009, 12:06 PM Chipotle - salad bowl with chicken and the corn salsa. NO DRESSING :) Spicy enough that its not boring. Of course the woman at Chipotle must have asked me 4 times "Are you sure thats all you want on it?"
I found the Chipotle Nutrition Calculator (http://www.chipotlefan.com/index.php?id=nutrition_calculator) last week and it saved me from an almost cheat when I had minimal time on the way to school.
Using that calculator, my meal above was 275 calories, 8g fat, 16g carbs and 35g protein.
If you like tomato salsa (not my thing, but trying) you can shave even more calories / carbs (Down to 215 and 5 carbs) by reducing the corn.
If you could spare more carbs / fat there are some great combinations there WITH lots of flavor...
To prevent the need for fast food altogether, I'm stocking my office this week with "mean in a bag" - the chicken breast, albacore steaks and salmon from the "canned food" aisle. They are surprisingly good (I dislike canned tuna) and have excellent macro ratios. Now to find something that has a long shelf life that can go with them...

Good thinking, I forgot about Chipotle. Ditching the actual wrap shaves a bunch of calories, but I just can't resist a Carnitas Fajita wrap with everything in it!
Nowhereman Sat, April 11th, 2009, 05:12 PM Berardi recommends, and it seems like he does it as well, to eat a protein/fat meal when eating out. He doesn't really count it as a cheat meal but, depending on what they are doing, it might be to some. Still it seems like decent enough advice. Carbs in restaurants are pretty bad, yummy but bad.

Some of the Panera salads are good, and you can do okay if you make your own sandwich. The nutritional information on their signature sandwiches is startling.
HevyMetal Sat, April 11th, 2009, 06:06 PM Maybe once every two weeks I will deliberately go to McDonalds' or A&W....and....order a double meat burger with no cheese.....such as a double Teen Burger (A&W...but you can't get the Teen Burger in the states...too bad because it's their best burger)....or a Double 1/4 Pounder (McDonalds).
Why?...because I want a smack-dab dollop of meat and saturated fats.
I always seem to be stuck somewhere with no food...
Other times if I am stuck:-
Will pop in to Super Mart and buy:-
Elevate Me protein bar
or
Deli chicken
or
Deli turkey
plus
raw Blueberry bagel (eat it the way it is)
banana
or
cooked chicken breast
or
zip-top can of Tuna with Olive oil (I eat lots of these...they are so handy...have about 18 grams of protein and low salt.....and they aren't Albacore Tuna... they are Yellowfin or Skipjack....I can get a tin of this with a pulltop for about $1.25 Cdn......so I'll buy 6 at a time...)
RV8 Mon, April 13th, 2009, 09:54 PM 3 - 89 cent burritos from Taco Bell. Even though my stomach will only (uncomfortably) hold 2. Save the third one for after your workout.
RoughDraft Fri, April 17th, 2009, 06:47 PM Just tried the new grilled whole pieces of chicken at KFC. Pretty tasty. Nutrition content:

I'm happy with the numbers (relative to fast food), but the pieces still leave a residue on my fingers. I hope that's not vegetable oil.
Justitia Sat, April 18th, 2009, 12:26 PM I keep plastic containers of all 3 flavors of At Large Protein powder in my office for emergencies. I buy plain (organic) low fat yogurt at a store a block away. I keep 16 oz cups in my office as well.
I mix 8 oz of yogurt with a scoop and a half of protein powder together. The quick dissolve of At Large mixes easily. I keep stirring it until it is all dissolved (about 3 minutes.) Strawberry is my favorite with Vanilla next. A little high in lactose carbs for my normal food plan but the great in a pinch. I also keep organic Tamari soaked almonds stored or I can pick up some at the store I buy the yogurt from.
If I want a more chocolaty experience, I get a can of diet, caffeine-free coke and mix in the chocolate protein powder.
BUT you have to be careful as you mix it as the protein powder and carbonation starts to explode as you stir it. So just put about 4 oz of the soda to start, dump in all the protein powder you want and start stirring. It will foam up and then the foam will start to collapse. The you can keep adding 4 oz at a time and stir until you get a whole can in there. But you need 16 oz cups to do this.
You can make multiple flavor combinations: sugar-free orange soda with the Vanilla powder (tastes just like a cremesicle), sugar-free chocolate soda with any of the powders, cherry soda, chocolate cherry, etc.
AtLarge's Protein powder dissolves so readily that it doesn't take long to make.
Then for carbs a piece of fruit and nuts for fat.
For a more dessert effect, if you can get hold of a couple of creamers from a nearby Starbucks, you can blend the protein powder, water ( I have not tried it with soda) and cream until its is thoroughly mixed and put it in the microwave. The protein powder coagulates in a totally neat way, creating marshmallow-like chocolate puffs.
In addition to keeping a stash of protein powders and nuts in my office, I also keep one of these: Braun Hand blender (http://www.gadgetbargains.com/leh-mr430hc.html) but just the two blending units and the cup not the chopper. Used it for years -- cheap for $35 bucks and hides in a drawer or under you desk with minimal space.
Of course you could also stash AtLarge's new protein bars. I haven't tried them -- but based on other products I've used they are probably pretty tasty. (I can't get them b/c I will down the whole box in a day... :o)

Do you think this would work with any protein powder, or are some of them a lot touchier than others?
I'm thinking about starting to rely on protein powders a bit more, but I'm not sure I like the idea of either the caloric sweeteners or the chemical artificial sweeteners. Still, I'd consider this more of like a treat, like a sugar free Jello or something.

 i have NEVER heard of this one. personally it sounds disgusting but i'll probably give it a try.

Well, remembering my awful experience with All The Whey towards the end of its sponsorship of JSF, I then appreciated the advantages of a readily dissolving protein powder.
At Large is one of those that dissolve readily. I have not tried much of True protein -- I only have their Micellar Casein (Instantized) (http://www.trueprotein.com/Product_Details.aspx?cid=22&pid=73) in vanilla unsweetened which I put in Friendship Cottage Cheese for breakfast to get my macros right. With a little water added, it seems to dissolve OK but that is not much of a test. Others here swear by True Protein.
WRT to artificial sweeteners -- given that I get organic or grass fed, etc for at least 90% of my consumption -- it is at odds with my using artificial sweeteners.
However my addiction to sugar/fat foods is really bad -- so I did a trade-off.
My research suggests that there really isn't much confirming evidence that I find convincing that sucralose (the product in Splenda) harms humans. It is made by substituting chlorine atoms for hyrdorxl atoms in the sugar molecule, hence its slogan "tastes like sugar because it is made from sugar. Regardless of the merit of that slogan, it does indeed (to me) taste like sugar. I used to be an equal fan, now I am a splenda fan.
My sugar issues unchecked will do far more damage to me than the evidence of harm from sucralose will do, in my estimation. So it is one area that I have just accepted the down=side.
You can however try making your own "soda" by buying quality sparkling water (my favorite right now is Gerolsteiner 00 but they just started marketing it in plastic bottles -- which I try to avoid. Plus the plastic bottles do not preserve the carbonation well and it is often flat. I will be switching to another brand when my current case of galls bottled Gerolsteiner runs out) and mixing it with some pure juice (orange comes to mind) and then mix it with the protein powder. (When I am sick and drinking a ton of orange juice -- I love mixing in the vanilla At large Protein powder.)
WRT to protein powder, True Nutrition gives you the option for sweetened or unsweetened -- still with all the flavors they offer.
 i have NEVER heard of this one. personally it sounds disgusting but i'll probably give it a try.
I am not sure how weird my taste buds are. PGC can't stand Whole food Pastries -- I love them. He prefers the mainstream supermarket cakes, etc. I can't stand them (except when I break down into a sugar binge and there is a brand new SuperFresh on my plaza that I am sure is contributor to the 15 lb weight gain over this past year in addition to being sick because the most disgusting sweet cake concoctions are just an elevator ride away for me.)
Probably, if you are OK with a large glass of OJ, I wold recommend the vanilla protein powder mixed with that. Then I would go with sugar-free orange soda and vanilla protein powder. As I am a total chocoholic, my fave is chocolate protein powder mixed with either Canfield's Diet Chocolate Fudge (http://www.beveragesdirect.com/detail-468-Canfields_Diet_Chocolate_Fudge_Soda_24_Pack.asp)or Chocolate Cherry Superfudge (http://www.beveragesdirect.com/detail-469-Canfields_Diet_Cherry_Chocolate_Fudge_Soda_24_Pack .asp)sugar and caffeine free soda. . I also like to mix the Vanilla powder with sugar-free Canfields Diet Swiss Creme (http://www.beveragesdirect.com/detail-470-Canfields_Diet_Swiss_Creme_Soda_24_Pack.asp)and Dr Brown's Diet Creme soda. And the chocolate powder with sugar-free Dr. Brown's Diet Black Cherry (http://www.dcsnacks.com/drinks/dr-brown-s-diet-black-cherry.html)soda. But both Canfields and Dr. Brown's are hard to find. I found a source and I hoard both brands of sodas. :D (though in googling -- I may have found online sources that are cheaper... ;))
Kenpo Fist Wed, April 22nd, 2009, 09:46 PM My favorite fast food cheats:
Chipotle - chicken or steak burrito bowl with black beans, rice, lettuce, corn and guacamole.
In-N-Out Burger - Double Double protein style (instead of bun burger is wrapped in lettuce.
tensdanny Wed, April 22nd, 2009, 11:04 PM Sometimes at the chip I hold off on rice and get double black beans. I also load up and get two heaping scoops of the mild salsa. I always get the steak and plenty of cheese since it's quite anabolic (and I'm not really counting calories these days).
mcfc98 Wed, April 22nd, 2009, 11:19 PM Sushi is my preferred fast food. There are loads of these places these days.
Yeah all that white rice isn't great but that and some raw salmon/shrimp vs a burger or pizza is no contest.

You can also order things "fresco" style which swaps cheese and sour cream for salsa, they actually have a lot of good options on this type of menu like grilled steak or chicken soft tacos... pretty awesome (IMO)...:tu:
