View Full Version : Two protein shakes in an hour. Is it a waste?
fernando Mon, March 30th, 2009, 10:05 AM Hi Everyone!
So I had to change my schedule and with it I also had to change gyms. Now I go to a gym close to work instead of home, and since I workout in the mornings, I no longer have breakfast at home.
The question is: does it make sense to have a shake PWO (egg protein powder + water) and 30-40 minutes later have another shake? This time with oats, milk and a banana. Am I taking too much protein for such short time span?
Main reason I'd like to add a second powder serving is the need of more calories. If I only do the oats, milk (fat free) and banana I feel I'm falling short with the calories.
What do you think? Any input will be much appreciated.
CuTe PoIsOn Mon, March 30th, 2009, 10:08 AM i would say that that excessive protein intake within short intervals wont go to waste, but instead be turned into glucose for fat stores in oppose to aiding the muscles.
fernando Mon, March 30th, 2009, 02:09 PM Huh, so my feeling that it might not be ideal was right. I definitely do not want that. I'm bulking, but still. In that case I guess I'll have to increase calories by adding some more fats and carbs. Any suggestions aside from nuts (I already do nuts, love'em) and oats?
Thanks Poison for your input.
euan Wed, April 1st, 2009, 04:05 PM I think it's fine. Lets say you put a scoop of protein powder in each shake, which turns out to be something like ~20g of protein in each shake. That's only 40g of protein over a short period of time. How is that any different to eating a can of tuna or 150g of chicken in one meal?
You say you workout in the morning and thus no longer have breakfast at home. Does this mean you are training on an empty stomach? An alternative could be to have one shake before leaving the house - just something like oats, fruit, protein powder, nuts - and then another shake after training.
Andrew Wed, April 1st, 2009, 05:14 PM How much is in each shake? A 20-25g scoop? That'll probably be fine...I mean you eat twice that in an average balanced 600-700 calorie meal so it's not crazy.
Sometimes when I'm trying to get in a lot of calories I make a big shake with 2 scoops of protein powder, a little milk, some ice, peanut butter, 1-2 bananas, and sometimes oats.
fernando Wed, April 1st, 2009, 08:05 PM The powder I use (egg protein) has 32g of protein per serving actually, so 2 scoops would be 64g. Still is about the same I get with a a full meal with a chicken breast, for instance.
Euan, yes, I train on an empty stomach, but that's always been like that even when I went to the gym close to home. I do eat an apple or a few almonds before I leave, but I don't have any meal per se before training. It's been working fine for me so far.
That said, it does make sense to have a shake right after I wake up. Maybe add some oats to it and have it while I get ready to leave. Then after the workout have another one...I might try it.
What I've been doing this week is have the PWO shake, and about 30-40 minutes later have a glass of FF milk with 3 tablespoons of oats, 1 banana and a couple of almonds. That would be the "official" breakfast.
Maybe I should make the protein scoop for the second shake, that might work too. I don't want to make breakfast too light, otherwise it gets harder to wait until lunch.
Anyway, good ideas, thanks for chipping in!
