View Full Version : Gas!
acrd Tue, March 24th, 2009, 07:05 PM Seriously, this is getting annoying, I have gas all day. Not sure what's contributing to it the most, some people say the raw veggies, some say the whey and soy protein I take every morning, but what can be done? Beano? For real? What gives?
FWIW, my typical diet:
M1: whey and soy protein shake + fiber powder
M2: raw veggies (baby carrots, sugar snap pears, mushrooms, broccoli, cucumber) lunch meat. (that's @ work. @ home on weekends it's an omelette w/ salsa)
M3: lunch meat or tuna, sometimes sushi, sometimes veggie or turkey wrap
M4: more raw veggies, small amount of lunch meat or smoked salmon, that sort of thing (+ whey/soy shake on lifting days)
M5: dinner: chicken, fish, shrimp w/ spinach salad, followed a little later by small amount of cottage cheese or yogurt
Advice?
HevyMetal Tue, March 24th, 2009, 07:59 PM If you get it all day, that means it started early on.
I kind of suspect the protein shake.
Are you mixing this with simple sugars?
Maybe you might want to include something, when you take it, that helps digest it.....like Digestive Enzymes,Papaya or HCl tablets.
Mauidude Tue, March 24th, 2009, 09:10 PM I second what HeavyMetal says and would just add you can try a digestive enzyme called "pancreatin". Its pretty cheap and you can usually find it in the vitamin section of most drug stores.
shuu Wed, March 25th, 2009, 11:13 AM I reckon it could be the soya protein, as soya gives gas to some
acrd Wed, March 25th, 2009, 01:56 PM thanks for the info. I switched up my protein mix (guess I picked a bad one because it tastes like crap) but I will see if this helps. If not I'll look for pancreatin.
acrd Fri, April 3rd, 2009, 06:43 PM Alright, so now I seem to be back to normal: gas and bloating all day every day. Any more thoughts?
Mauidude Fri, April 3rd, 2009, 06:49 PM Eliminate one thing at a time till you isolate the cause.
Phillyp Sun, April 5th, 2009, 10:14 AM lol this happened to me when I first started eating a higher mount of protein, eventually my body must have gotten used to it and now its ok with a higher protein intake, maybe just wait a while till your body gets used to it.
MannishBoy Sun, April 5th, 2009, 01:54 PM It may be the protein, it may be the added fiber and veggies. If you are fine with the protein powder you use, it might just take a bit of time for the bacteria in the gut that helps break down the food to adjust. A probiotic might help that along.
I think a lot of people go through this at first after changing up a diet.
SWO LIFE Fri, April 10th, 2009, 09:15 PM When I first started I increased my fiber intake way too quick and was eating too much and it made me gassy all day. Cut back on the fiber (I started the day with high fiber cereal which I think was the main cause) and now get more from veggies later in the day and it has gone away.
Nowhereman Thu, April 16th, 2009, 07:58 PM are you lactose intolerant? If you are then it may be your protein poweder. Even a little the 98% free stuff messes my stomach up. I take lactiad pills (costco has their own brand really cheap) with each shake and my stomach (wife, people around me) thank me.
acrd Sun, April 19th, 2009, 01:29 PM definitely not lactose intolerant. I've had better luck recently, gas has been less of a problem (still exists every few days but it's not a day-long ordeal of pain).
Three things likely helped:
1) stopped taking metamucil. to be honest I could barely stomach the sight and smell of the stuff.
2) switched from whey/soy powder mix to 100% soy powder.
3) my body finally adjusted to the diet.
I would guess #1 and #3 solved the problem. Will have to see with #2, since I just ran out of 100% soy and will be taking 100% whey for the next week or two.
